1991. 1600 Crossflow out of a Mk2 Escort Ghia. Reason : to pull the entire car apart and rebuild it to learn how, as I wanted to build a kitcar. A £350 motor was a cheaper risk. :-)

Dolly 1850 Slant 4. It blew up after the third day of driving it. Couple of months later, pulled it out and swapped it with a £30 one I picked up. That engine is still in the car. Though the car is a bit bent around it now.

My 59 100e (first car) Removing the hack job engine fit the previous owner had done and never finished in the 80's, (1300 cross) And dropping a 1600 crossflow in there instead Along with new engine mounts and some adjustements to the bulkhead as he had fitted it pretty far back originally

My First car, An austin A40. I also blew the engine up so had to replace it. I had no hoist so with a friends help i lifted it out with a rope over my shoulder standing on the wings in the front garden at my parents house. Fitted a 1275 engine out of an mg and drove 200 miles to Cornwell the next weekend. I even towed my mates Beetle home with it as he blew his up while we were down there. i couldnt get rid of the old engine so i buried it. X marks the spot......

1983 Mini Mayfair 1.0 A series when I was 14 (97, eek), because I was going to rebuild it, but a lack of time, skill, money and dedication meant it all got scrapped lol.

My first, me and my brother, was a pug 205. was a 1.2 with Roland Garros interior, body kit and a huge whale tale! HG went so we decided to put the 1.4 in (had to be cheap insurance still). Think I remember nearly chopping his finger off as I released the engine hoist on the fast setting rather than the slow one! ops! That must have been back in 2001

Porsche 924 - Bought two to make one and pulled the spare engine out for spare. I did it the low effort 'I have no engine crane' kinda way:

My first solo engine swap was...... I foolishly bought a 318i E30 off a mate for £150 (pre-brokenated) he had driven the car around for a few weeks with a gone head gasket, then the timing belt snapped. So the engine was pretty shafted, the parts alone to repair the engine ran to over £200. So I went on E30zone and picked up an M40 engine and gearbox for £50 (cost £70 in diesel to go and get he bloody thing). I had no where to do the engine swap so, working at Halfords at the time I waited for the manager to go on holiday and did it in two days over a weekend in Halfords Torquay car park using the stock room to store the engine crane ;D proper traveller spec. Sold the car 6 months later for £500, winning! Said car......

When I was 17 my first car was a Cortina 1600E. The clutch was a bit tired so I decided to pull the engine out so I could clean the bay up and paint the engine properly at the same time. It didn't need anything other than a clutch but I ended up partially stripping the engine down, ported the head and reground the valves in!

My original Stiletto - cos I snapped the crank... Should have changed gear earlier, I guess!!
I then bought an Imp Sport with 3 months MOT and a bit of rent on the screen for £150... it had fitted a 80+bhp 998cc engine built by legendary tuning firm Hartwell. I yoinked that out, shoved it up the chuff of the Stiletto and sold the Sport's shell for £150.
I had to do it all again in three months' time, as I then blew that engine to bits trying to out accelerate a 3.0l Capri - I almost did too...

The 1196cc engine out of my Kadett C when the rings went, in retrospect 9000 rpm on an engine with over 100k on the clock wasn't the smartest move.
Hoiked out by me and my Dad by hand with rope and an old bannister, this was my first car and soon became my first engine rebuild.

Pulled a 3.0 essex out a rotten Capri with no crane, unbolted everything, propped the crossmember with suspension, steering rack and engine all attached to it on stands and lifted the shell off and wheeled it out the way.
