Jaguar XJ6 3.4.
It had terrible oil pressure, which I ignored, being 20 and skint. I couldn't ignore it after it popped a rod out on the A38 coming up the long hill out of Derby toward Belper! It went with a hell of a bang...
I borrowed an engine crane, spoke to some of my garage contacts and found another car as a donor. It took me about a week to get it all out and the new one back in.

First time was with help, and was to cure an oil leak from the flywheel seal. First time on my own was to upgrade from the old 1300 engine to a 1600 with twin carbs. Did it in a day, and then drove it 80 miles to uni in the evening. Out with the old: In with the new..

first time was my old purple ford 100e - 1600 crossflow powered
it suffered from the usual crossflow malady of dissapearing oil pressure, so after progressively smoking out most of north wales, I acquired a freebie 1600 kent from a clubmate's brother's old mk2 escrot rally car - I literally pulled it out of his coalshed with my little brother, dragged it up his driveway, and chucked it into the works D21 pickup truck - no sump, plugs, and various other ancillaries gone me and my mate steve the 'pool plopped it in over a weekend, and after tow starting it with my mates transit, and it lived again - funnily enough steve ended up with the car, so it must have made an impression!
first solo engine swap was pulling the perkins out of the truck, and replacing it with a 2.5 n/a iveco diesel - it was more complicated than ^^ that swap, but no major dramas (bar wiring it up, hanging the prop, chopping the sump...)

First time was with my dad - Cortina Mk3 cam belt snapped on holiday - luckily near a cousin in Wiltshire - so we swapped it in a few days in his front garden...... Solo - Dolly Sprint - brother (no license etc...) was late for work - I had the dolly at my folks while I worked away. Rad hose was bulging so I knew I had to swap it out - note on dash to notify anyone wanting to move the car on the drive. Dad knew so all OK (so I thought). Bro drove it to work - it overheated - started OK to come home that evening but didn't make it. He had a mate tow it to my folks and left it back in place.... didn't say a word! I only twigged when I took the rad hose off - it was split badly, I chucked the new one on - engine fubar'd. He eventually admitted it...... but by then I'd sourced a replacement and swapped the thing out. Little b*st'rd

My first engine removal was a couple of years ago with my 1500 Beetle. The 1500cc single port engine was still going pretty well but I pulled it out because I had bought a 1600cc twin port. All went well and was achieved over a weekend with one mate's help, giving a very useful improvement in power. On the evening that we got the motor in a very spirited night-time drive through the hills proved that the new engine was indeed working! The best part about installing used engines is that you don't have to run them in, so you can thrash it as soon as you're finished... ;D

Ha ha. My first car engine swap was on a beetle too. A 1972 1300. My first car at age 17. The fabled no3 exhaust valve drop was my reason for the swap. Didn't half rattle !! Bought a 1200 lump for 40 notes and off we went.

Mini 850 when I was 17 (1989). Knocking big end bearings so took it out and put an 1100 in.

First complete engine out job was a 1982 Yamaha RD125LC. Water pump/oil pump seal failed causing crank pressure issues which caused the overflow tubes to carry out there job. Unfortunately the previous owner had routed the overflow tubes close to the back tyre causing my first highside. All good fun as I was young and bounced rather well lol. Took the engine out and decided to split the cases and replace all the internal bearings and fit a new clutch. Ran like a charm after that until I gave it to my brother to store and it got nicked!

Mine was in 1974 and my father-in-laws Volvo 144E that had broken a piston at 300,000 miles . We didn't have a crane so stripped it down to a short block and lifted out by hand - rope around a fencing post and one on each end ! Rebore and crank grind later the car went on for another 200,000 miles making it 500,000 when sold - still in good condition.

My dad always goes on about a story he heard about a Volvo engine. A friend of his fathers stripped down the engine in his Volvo and found the tolerances were still tighter after 300k wear than they were for a new contemporary Ford engine. Any truth in that? I don’t know.

Doing it now! I am 17 and it's on a '77 Spitfire 1500; I've just got a second hand engine from a scrappy, (DM....ESS - so it's from a 1500 Toledo. Which is ridiculously rare!) and have them both stripped down ready to swap. I'm switching because the old one drinks more oil than petrol and has multiple ominous rattles!

My first removal was a 1800cvh from a Sierra, it was my car that got rear ended in traffic. Great learning curve as it was just a simple removal, along with everything else i could sell.
First one back in that had to work was when i took the 1600 x-flow out the fiesta and put the 1100 back in, I had help and supervision but the sence of achevement was high ;D

Can't remember exactly how old I was, maybe 4 or 5, but I took the engine out of a 50cc bike on my own after I seized it up. First one on a car was a Mk3 Cavalier when I was about 8 or 9. It blew up when we were on holiday on the Gowa. Got recovered home, dad was working and I was on school holidays so I set off with a Haynes manual and got it out. IIRC the only bits my dad did was to undo the driveshaft nuts and then help me lift it out. He then directed me as I rebuilt it and helped me to refit it.

First removal - excluding the Suffolk Punch lawnmower - would be the engine in my Imp. It came out because it was rather tired.
Unfortuanetly, while replacing the gaskets on the replacement engine, I had unknowingly cracked the block. So the coolant leaked straight back out and oevr the driveway.
The second engine removal was of that engine with the cracked block - the original engine went back in again.

Series 3 straight 6 landy. Reason distributor drive jammed and wrecked the engine. Took the engine out took to a specialist to be rebuilt and it came back burning more oil than the USA! That and bad "read not actually done but still charged" brake repairs was what made me decide never to let anyone else get there hands on my babies!
