This is a lot too rich for me at £50k, I get the idea he is taking a chance.... but someone may spend the cash. Mercedes-Benz Germany exported in the years 1956 - 1960 400 chassis cab Pontons to South Africa where it was finished as pickup trucks. This was quite a unique operation to boost Mercedes-Benz car sales and it was the foundation of the manufacturing of Mercedes-Benz vehicles in South Africa. A beautifully restored Mercedes-Benz Ponton Pickup has come on to the market. It is available to the connoiseur collector. Only 8 of these very scarce vehicles have survived in a roadworthy condition. It is available ex Cape Town.

Thats lovely.
Considering the vans, light commercials and full size that have been built by MB over the years its quite amazing that they haven't done more of that sort of thing.

Wonderful! They must have tooled up specifically to make those cab backs?! And then the locals used rear door skins and wings to make the back end?

If you are interested in some nice and weird stuff, go to Carandclassic.co.uk and look under South Africa, then have a dig around.
Stuff like Capri and Granada Perana's in there and other more obscure stuff.
Keep in mind, many of the sellers are taking a chance, knowing £££'s convert will into SA Rands.
Still, not a bad way to spend some time.

At 50k the vender is definitley trying it on, in my local classic car club we have a similar late 50s 220 Ponton in white. It was ourchased and shipped from South Africa for 26k it is seriously mint. I i'll have a quick run through my pics and post a pic of i t soon. Nice old cruiser though!
I have only seen x1 piranha in the UK, last year at the CC show at the NEC in november, as mentioned on other threads, the only problem with the trade sites aimed at us enthusiasts, cars are often advertised at a premium. My advice (take it or leave it) is run an internet search of your local classic/specialist car clubs. You will always find club members who advertise there cars at the event, the benefit is you can get up close and personal with it, also if you walk and talk with other memebers i guarantee you will dig up all sorts of history. Rivals always like to spill the beans on issues!!! Lat year i was tempted by a Scimitar GTE, resprayed met dark red, sat low on modern 17's full Rover/Buick V8 conversion, big twin pipes and 5speed.

That's a beautiful thing indeed, opulent versatility. I wonder was the W123 ever made into a pickup/ute?

That's a beautiful thing indeed, opulent versatility. I wonder was the W123 ever made into a pickup/ute? I did a Google image search for a W123 pickup, no joy. That said, there are a few Merc pickups out there. This though came up, still one of my all time faves. I also found this 1956 Holden Ute in the same search. Seriously nice looking.

The Bentley and the Holden have got it. The others, I dunno, I don't see 'utilitarian' in their press releases...
