didnt the earlier ones fall over on corners due to being unstable I think anything has potential done correctly and seeing your threds Grizz I'm sure it will be done as it should Certainly seemed to be a lot of fuss about it, and a mate's mum's one actually did roll in 01 in a situation when it really shouldnt have. I'm not a fan of that silly shape in cars at all, but as with most german cars it would look far better low with wide wheels

We had a 1.4 LWB one for a year or so and have to say they're excellent motors. Small, easy to park, economical, back seats come out, and on some the passenger seat too so you have loading space to beat a small van.
I chucked ours about no end and it always felt stable, presume the LWB helps.
Some have been abused beyond all use but a lot (engage sexest mode) were bought by C/E-Class owners for their wives to run around in and underwent loving dealership care their whole life so are real minters.
I'd far rather run around in one of these with the kids than a Renault Scenic of similar age (nothing against Renaults but when we looked there wasn't one that didn't smell of sick and dog and feature duct tape as a structural element to the interior).
Not retro yet though I'd say!

Seems like you are no longer seriously considering the A Class. If you still are, your home work is not done. The car's "sandwich" chassis design based on a double floor makes it extremely difficult and expensive to work on for numerous reasons. Diagnostics by your friendly MB dealer's exclusive laptop. I've driven them and find them bland.

I thought I'd photoshopped one of these before, but then when I checked it turns out it was actually a B class. Bum. Oh well I'll post it anyway If you substitute the "motorsport theme" for a "cool and low runabout theme" I think you could be on to something. edit: Actually forget mine, here's another (the winning) chop from the same comp: *waits for someone to wade in and say "that's not an a class"

Second pic works for me.
Still a pity this will not be happening for us.

How about an Audi A2? Small petrol or diesel engines around 50-60mpg. Not sure on insurance though and the 1.4 petrol version around 2000/2001 is starting to get cheap!

Thread resurrection time:-) Had a disastrous gearbox failure in the Volvo. Cat was needing done too so cut my losses and said farewell as a Dog with a Transit took it away: Urgently need a car for SWMBO, so went out to look at a Ka, a Corsa and a Scenic. Came home with this: First impressions- it didn't roll over (yet), it drives fine and being the LWB it has ridiculous amounts of legroom in the rear (more than a new S-Class):-) Got home, found this thread, now the panic is setting in lol. May say a little prayer:-)

I've been using one as a daily/workhorse for a few months now, no problems to report, apart from the rear seats are heavy to put in and out all the time.

I was about to say the same thing! (not at all biased since I have one!) Get a sweet light (Alu) car that will appreciate, looks like an MPV TT, rather than an Orthopaedic shoe A-classes are awful - rented one from EasyCar years ago and it was twitchy, cold, squeaky and falling apart after only about 10,000 miles How about an Audi A2? Small petrol or diesel engines around 50-60mpg. Not sure on insurance though and the 1.4 petrol version around 2000/2001 is starting to get cheap!

I looked at the A class when I bought my A2.
I found it suprisingly cramped and very sluggish to drive. On the plus side it was very refined and quiet and felt well made. I know a couple of people who have A class and they don't report any issues with them and quite like them. The only gripe is the fuel economy which is best described as average.
I prefer the A2 which is just as refined but has better performance and fuel economy.

Trust me, if I could have found an A2 at short notice for anywhere near the same money I'd have been all over it:-)
