someone on another forum has rightly pointed out that it is not studley castle in the press photo! after half an hour or so searching google images I have discovered it is in fact delhouise castle in Edinburgh! got to love the Granada, Hy-and-Dry Accent & Brava hiding at the back of what looks a lot like a Peugeot Press photo! ;D

I have started on the underside of the floor now, there is a lot of underseal to get rid of which is being attacked with an angle grinder wire brush attachment. this picture shows the top half almost back to bare metal. this is the drivers side rear chassis mount, jacking point and lurking beneath is rot this is the passenger side which is far worse, as you can see the chassis has snappped so it looks like the whole rear chassis will have to come off for some serious repair work. I ran out of time last night but I have made a good start on where the rear floor meets the front, the strip that covers the join had rotted away so i've had to make another, both o/s and n/s have gone so i've had to guess how it should look. I just have to clean up the welds a bit more and drill a couple of holes for drainage (i'm guessing) and I can move on to stripping the rear wheels/ chassis assembly.

Crikey, bit of welding ahead then. Great project though, well done so far!

It is a big job, but this car is worth the work.

I don't know whether it's just the pictures, but it looks very much like there's no paint at all under that underseal, which is lazy of BL and scary.

I love your dedication to this car. The car I most regret ever selling was an Allegro as it got the best reactions (as in I used to have one of those / learnt to drive in one of those etc...), plus it was so much fun to drive. I must have been really lucky too as I got mine for scrap money as it had been off the road for 11 years and it needed no welding. I'm off to scour Ebay... good luck with yours and enjoy! Heres a pic for inspiration.

ah yes, I have the magazine with that feature, I also have a few more with almost my car in hon566n, hon569n but nothing with mine in yet. I need to start researching scottish auto tests and reviews since the car was obviously taken to scotland for the press shoot. I haven't really done much in the last few weeks for a number of reasons: christmas, putting a new engine in the mini and finding myself a small unit so andy can have his garage back - which i've spent the last 2 weeks clearing all the rubbish out of. it was the old carpenters stores at work and as you can imagine it had years of wood, shavings and general rubbish piled high and hasn't been used in probably 10 years. i've spent 8 hours cleaning it out so far and it's nearly done, just another hour or 2 sweeping and painting and the estate will have a new home. any way this is where I was just before christmas:- rear wheel assembly removed - which will now have to go back on for the transportation to the new unit, hydro elastic fluid removed and all fluid/brake/fuel lines removed, and a bit more cleaning. whist I was cleaning the inside of the o/s/r arch I hound yet more rust and thats it for now, the next update will be once the car has been moved which won't be for 2 weeks or so

i found a list on wikipedia of scottish (national) papers and have emailed them all. so far i have had 2 good responses and the rest are passing the email around to the relevant departments. good response no.1 comes from the guardian: which goes back to the whole proving it's my car and leyland changing the plates saga..... good response no.2 comes from Greenock Telegraph the last one is promising

I'm loving the work here, and the history behind the car is fascinating, one of the few times I say keep a car standard just for posterity. Do you know if any of the other press cars are still about? Would be fantastic to get a part lineup at the Castle once yours is restored.

the last one is promising I'm not so sure, doesn't it say that everyone who has driven your car is now dead? Could be an omen...... ;D

Just found this press photo from June 75 of another Allegro. Shame the retro honey is obscuring the front plate

Having owned a 1976 1100DL 4-door Allegro (with a 1300 engine) as my first car. This thread brings back many memories of my student days. With the help of hammerite and a few tubs of fibreglass and filler I managed to bodge the car through three MOT's and it saw out my student days. (I could not weld then). BTW, when I bought the car in 1986, one of the wings was rotten, me and my Dad cut/ drilled the old one off and managed to bolt on the new pattern wing along the gutter. Smoothrite light blue brushed on was close enough to the Tahiti blue paint at the time. On the final MOT in 1990, the tester must have had better eye-sight than the garage I took it to before as he ripped out the fibreglass from the front and rear chassis and sills and failed the car. In addition, the car had a very worn gearbox and juddery clutch and the engine used almost as much oil as petrol. I think on its last journey from Leicester to Scotland, it burnt one and a half gallons of oil in little over 400 miles and took me 14 hours to complete the journey! The car consumed so much fresh oil that i used to just change the filter and never the oil itself. I'm amazed to see someone attempting to restore an Allegro that is even more rusty than mine was. The car was only 14 years old when I scrapped it and already very rusty. BL build quality was appalling by 1976. Definitely the worst car I've ever owned or driven, but I shall be watching this thread with great interest!

Sad that you have to let this one go, I hope you find a suitable new owner.
