Yeah, I've ssen that sort of damage as well... But on a turbod engine.
I've heard of water leaking gaskets wrecking the bores before, but thoughtthat was a very rare thing to happen. bad luck, I guess... Another forum suggested, detonation could be a cause - I think that could be possible, as I indeed had - occasinally - problems with that. Iin low rev-high load situations. The engine made a 'pinging' noise. Is this also refered to as det?
Serves me right for not sorting that out in time, I guess...

I think the fact the plugs are corroded on the thread is a pretty big clue where the water has been coming from... Though why it'd affect those two more than the others I don't know, water isn't all that picky IME lol.

Pinging, Pinking, Knocking and Detonation are all different terms for the same thing. I,e pre ignition the mixture igniting when the piston is still on its up stroke.

Pinking is not detonation.
Pinking is pre-ignition Detonation is explosive combustion
Pinking is not that serious, it needs addressing but won't cause any problems if it's only occasional. A de-coke (Carb cleaner in the intake) can fix it. Detonation will kill the engine in no time at all and smash things.
The reason for this is pinking is just like the ignition timing being miles out, the fuel still burns on a flame front Detonation causes a massive spike in the peak combustion pressure as the whole lot goes up explosively in one go.

From what I understand, pinking is where the fuel isn't as stable as it needs to be for the conditions inside the cylinder, and ignites from a hotspot before the spark ignites it, causing an early flame front. De-coking the engine reduces the particulates and carbon the glow and cause the fuel to pre-ignite. Detonation is where the heat and pressure cause the fuel to ignite spontaneously from within the mixture, at several points at once, and the fronts collide? Either way both conditions aren't desirable... --Phil

Agreed neither are good but pinking/pinging isn't very damaging
The odd bit of pinking under heavy load, hot engine, poor fuel, coked up engine, etc is to be expexcted on old engines worked hard. It sounds like somoene tapping a coin on a tin roof, tink-tink. My Nova used to do it when driven hard.
Detonation sounds like a bottom end knocking, loud, intermittant and very unpleasant. Won't go on for long though as it'll all suddently go quiet...

Ok, thanks for clearing that up In that case I had only pinging, not detonation. As far as I can trust my ears of course. Cheers, Jan
