I ajusted the interior rear view mirror on my girlfriends Punto yesterday and it fell off in my hands, taking a large chunk of glass with it (about 10x20mm of one side of the laminate). I've got windscreen cover so could pay the £60 excess and get a new screen, but I was thinking of filling the hole and seeing how long it lasts.
If I fill it with clear Araldite or similar will it prevent cracking?
I've just stuck one of those suction rear view mirrors on for now.

Call bloody Gavin from Autoglass. ;D ;D ;D Sorry, but I couldn`t resist it. I thought it was "John - 30 - Technician for AutoGlass"Just think Matt, you could have saved on your expensive windscreen excess if you'd just called AutoGlass......repairs are usually free Damn it, I really should stop listening to the radio! Stick some Araldite in there and see how you get on. It'll probably stop it spreading and worst case scenario, if it does get worse, you can call John/Gavin then to get it replaced (and pay your expensive insurance excess)

I called Autoglass. It wasn't Gavin I spoke to, unless he's on the pre-op pills and his voice has gone effeminate. Apparantley unless its a stone chip it needs a new screen.
Gonna Araldite it and see what happens. Maybe i'll hit a large pothole or it'll get cold and then crack like in the ad.

For something as important as a windscreen (30% of the cars strength), why not just pay the £60 excess and have the peace of mind (and a clearer screen).

Also if you leave it, imagine the whole screen going at 70mph play it safe, get it replaced It's a laminated screen; worst that would happen would be large cracks extending from it. No doubt a bit scary at 70, but it's not going to shower you with broken glass and blind you.

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

Get a new screen mate, if you try and glue it you may make the damage worse as the glue shrinks it can crack the screen, the screen will only crack and not shatter as you have a laminated screen and not toughend, don't use Super glue as it is no good for screens, a typical monday morning job for me is to replace a screen that has had it's mirror stuck back on the screen because the owner knocked it off at the weekend while cleaning the inside of the car, super glue will stick it but while it dry's it shrinks and you end up with a crack round the mirror mount/boss and down the screen, sounds weird but it happens, they do sell a mirror glue kit at most motor factors but as you have part of the screen on the back of the mirror mount/boss and the laminate expossed the glue might not work, check with your insurance company first as to which company you can use for the replacment screen, i would advise you use a local windscreen firm and not a national company as you get bad service from them and often sub standard work, there might be a price limit for using a local firm so as long as they can come within that price range they can do the job or you will have to pay the balance, if you use a national company there is no price limit, but you get bad service, check you windscreen XS £ ? as they have gone up alot in recent years, phone up some local firms and see if they can direct bill your insurance company ? hope that helps, Rusty.

Hey rusty had a cracked screen and dodgy pillar and all was good ;D I've been putting off getting my van one done as it means paying the excess, been OK thus far and hasn't got any bigger. Toughed ones ain't fun when they pop, especially on the motorway
