What with my affection for British cars slightly more than ....loving, at the moment, I've been poking around for some alternative Japanese or, well, plain different daily drives. I want something that's a hoot to drive and quite fast really, so have been batting about and come up with the following ideas. As I know nothing about Japenese motors or the like, I was wondering if you could guide me in the direction! I'd prefer RWD but as I'd like to expand my experiences a hot FWD beastie wouldn't be out of the question! 3 things though. Must go well, be fairly easy to get parts for and not prone to exploding. That's about it! ;D My ideas so far : Corolla GT (the one with the 4AGE ) Silvia S12? 200SX? Of course, done up in suitable retro style Older Soarer? Would love one of those! Or maybe I'm looking in the wrong place. Our neighbour has a 205 GTI and I've always quite liked it....would need a bit of pepping up but could be fun. You don't see them that often either, so they have that to boot. MR2? Suggestions, comments and ownership stories appreciated ;D Oh my budget's about 1200 at a stretch, by the way. So no far fetched ideas! ;D

Stick a J-engine in the Triumph!
Buy a Silvia and then drive it until you're ready for the swap!

One of these.... Mazda 323F GT. 1.8 16v motor (as MX5) gives 137bhp but still feels torquey thanks to variable length inlet tracts. I sold this pair, the good one having FSH, for £300. Not your average Japanese late 80's/early 90's hatch, these genuinely do have character.

Maybe I'll just be stupid AGAIN and buy another ungodly hot-rodded engine-swapped by dubious personage machine then. Hell, it's only money I suppose! Wonder if it's still aboot.

Corolla GT ftw! They're quite a characterful wee beastie, the chassis is ok on them, and the 4AGE.... well, say no more! Reliable as hell, I've had a lot of fun in the FX-GT model which is pretty much the J market one, the 88kw they have as standard gives them enough poke to scoot round at a decent pace.
What about a Daihatsu Charade GT-ti......? They're awesome if not a little death-trappy.

Assuming these are all equally available in your neck of the woods
S12 Silvia FTW! Do you have the IRS ones over there or just the live axle ones? Turbo or NA?
Anything with a 4AGE is gold. MR2s are a bit finiky, so I've read. A mad-scientist mate of a mate has a supercharged one.

The Corolla GT hatchback was the car that I used to drive when my mother was out of the house when I was 16 years old. It was blindingly quick and had a great engine. They are really cheap now and great fun. It's not RWD but so what. It handles soooo well!

Corolla GT (the one with the 4AGE ) How affordable are these then? Never bothered to check before but I'm getting really tempted by Japanese stuff myself.... Although I'd been thinking more along the lines of 100A / 120Y!

Oooo yeah those are cool! 2E-T can take some hammering too, apparently you can pump silly levels of boost into those things and they relish it! Honda City Turbo II.... did you guys get these things? 20psi on standard internals is not unheard of for these wee beasties.... personally I reckon it's be a hoot as long as you kept corner speeds down!

One of the cars I've had in the past which I thoroughly enjoyed was a Bluebird Turbo. The turbo and executive models are very different from the run of the mill Blueys and have a much more refined ride, better handling and are much quieter. The turbos come with discs all round, switchable suspension, PAS etc and the same engine as the S12 silvia, 1.8 SOHC turbo. They have stacks of upgrade potential too. Best of all they are really cheap to buy. Dropped on some nice rims they look pretty smart too, although I must say I prefer the look of the saloon to the hatchback. My old turbo saloon... -Ed
