awesome cars these! I had a gold one a few years ago - 1.6 ford engine and it was quick! Cant imagine how quick the ca18et ones would be  the pics there show it has two wipers, this means that the chassis is NON galvanised and just to warn you, mine appeared mint as you like but managed to snap the chassis in half going up the ramp into the petrol station!!! Got it fixed though - fair amount of welding! It went at the back so have a good scout underneath it. The broken popups arent too much of a hassle to fix, theres a guide on scimweb, I fixed both of mine following it. It was really reliable and a hoot to drive, although the chassis is so nimble that the body doesnt quite keep up, corner of my windscreen popped out when I was giving it a particularly hearty pasting Ive got pics in my pbucket if anyones interested  |

^^ I would be "that guy" I'm also the owners club Registrar for the model. I'm on Scimitar number 27, with 8 at present. To answer a few questions. Chassis were galvanised after roughly number 900, though a fair few galv cars exist before then. Total number of SS1s is 1507, plus 200ish Sabres (the replacement with a traditional fiberglass body) Panels are a mixture of fibreglass and injected plastics, replacements are readily avaliable and cheap. Everything else is a concoction of Triumph, Austin, Vauxhall, Ford, Fiat, Land Rover, MG.... th elist goes on. It's basically a very upmarket kitcar. Why buy one over say.... An MGB? Faster and no corrosion issues, heck even an early one is FAR easier to weld up than a monocoque car An MX5? Having just sold a MK2.5 MX5, I can honestly say the SS1 wins any day of the weak, ok so it's not as refined by a long shot. But it handles better, rides better, and actually has some character. I think there is still one advertised at the BP garage just outstide Southam, between Coventry and Banbury. Was around £1.5k iirc.
Looked in good nick although been there for at least 2-3 months.

The resemblance with the Michelotti Ferrari is not strange, since the SS1 was designed by him as well.
Love the silver race car with the gold rims!
It would look even better as a hatchback.

my mates got one with the toyota engine and i can confirm that its VERY QUICK :-)
he thought he was getting a bargain when he bought his but ended up spending nearly two years getting it the way he wanted and road legal, rear subframe was gubbed and the brakes were knackered. he quickly found out that its a bit of a heinz 57 car- made up of many other car companies parts-- but he wont part with it.

If you get one with the CVH engine, then surely a Zetec would be a shoe-in swap?
As for fitting another shell to the chassis, I read somwewhere that the wheelbase is extraordinarily short, which could limit your options.

Certainly never got a Toyota lump from new, though I have heard of one SS1 running one.
And what's wrong with the CVH? It has it's fans, even if they are few and far between!
Regards wheelbase, there is an ongoing project local to me which is an SS1 chassis with a slightly modified Mini shell ontop!

It's still there and has been for rather longer than 2-3 months. I've been driving past it every day since late last year and it was on a driveway in Long Itch along with a Dolomite and a Toledo for a couple of months before that. |
