Took the points off, they're not pristine but not bad either. Rubbed them up with a little 1600 followed by 2000 but didn't really make a difference. Lubed up the dizzy cam with a little grease, reset the gap at .4mm (well, very close to!). Feeler gauge wouldn't glide between them but fit between.
Engine still ran rough. Swapped the dizzy cap & arm with the new intermotor parts but still no difference.

Next swap: Condensor.
And check the ignition timing while you're at it:
Find No1 TDC. Turn the engine back to the correct ignition timing setting (bearing in mind that it should be a bit further retarded [more degrees BTDC] for 95RON). Loosen the dizzy clamp. Remove No.1 spark plug, re-connect to lead, and earth on cylinder block. Turn on ignition.
Assuming rotor arm turns anti-clockwise, turn dizzy body by ~10 degrees anti-clockwise to ensure that points are closed. Slowly turn dizzy clockwise until you see the plug spark. Turn off ignition. Re-tighten clamp. Refit plug.
That'll get the timing close, although a decent timing strobe (in conjunction with an accurate test rev-counter) is better, and by ear - when you have experience - better still.
Whereabouts are you? If you're in the Herts or Beds then I'd happily have a look at it for you.

Should have swappe the condensor last night! Forgot. I have another spare new one. The timing is more difficult for me, can't get my head round it properly! Though I guess I can't do any harm, as it's current timing is marked! I am in Swindon. Going to call my local motor factors and see if they have any points in stock, even if not Bosch I'll grab one anyway. See attached, I attempted to take a photo of the points. Attachments:

Oh and to add, since my tinkering last night she's actually running worse. Barely able to hold 50, misses quite alot and still will not rev very high.
I have just had my motor factors put by a set of Intermotor points, will pick them up this afternoon and fit them along with a fresh condensor.
Should I be grabbing anything else from them? All my leads are in good condition, cap & rotor arm replaced last night. The current plugs look fine, but in any case I have another used set which are also in fine cond.

Condenser replaced but no difference. Turned my attention to the coil, where the king lead connects. You could barely see any clean metal in the hole, so stuffed some 1000 sandpaper down there, quite alot of dust came out.
Off to see if it has improved!

Well there wasn't any change at first, but has improved. Still top end missfiring, but so long as I drive like my Grandmother it's all smooth baby! That was after giving the coil a bit of a clean, so will look for a replacement one of them!

Sounds like it could be the coil then.
One other thing to check - the dizzy cap has a sprung centre contact made of carbon. Make sure that it's still springy - gently push it in and see if it pops out again. If not then the spark will have a hard time getting to the rotor arm.

Yep noted the dizzy cap spring loaded carbon, and as I have replaced the cap this is in top notch condition.
Picking up the new points this evening and hope to be able to grab a coil from them too.

£35 for an intermotor coil? No, that's not a good price. Not at all. Not too convinced about £20 for an unbranded one, either. Do you know if the Astra has a ballast resistor in the ignition system? EDIT - If no ballast resistor I'd be tempted to go for a Lucas DLB101 coil. If it's a ballast system then go for a Lucas DLB102. DLB101: cgi.ebay.co.uk/230602428910DLB102: cgi.ebay.co.uk/230619995990The Lucas Sport coil - the DLB105 - is an option if you don't have a ballast resistor. It will give you a bigger, stronger spark, but will also kill the points faster: cgi.ebay.co.uk/220790389902Coils like this are pretty generic really - you just need to match ballast/non ballast. There seem to be two types of Bosch points - LH and RH. They are mirror images of each other. It looks as though the image I posted earlier (Polo, identical to Fiesta) is the opposite type to the ones you have, going by the Intermotor application lists on ebay. Ebay (Polo/Fiesta - Probably NOT YOURS): cgi.ebay.co.uk/120716690096Ebay (Aircooled VW - Should be yours, Astra 1.2 is listed there): cgi.ebay.co.uk/120729568610If they are the second shape, buy these Bosch points: cgi.ebay.co.uk/250771092368I imagine your condenser looks something like this: cgi.ebay.co.uk/290532912405although it might have a long trailing wire to connect to the coil. This company claim OE quality, which would be a good thing if true. Personally, however, I'd be tempted to buy this Bosch one (which won't fit, but will at least be of good quality): cgi.ebay.co.uk/220803280754then cut the wire off one of your current condensors and splice this one to it. Soldering and heatshrink would be best, but good crimps would work.
