That really is very neat. A mate has attempted this on a G60 - and trust me, it gets very complex very quicky with regards to wiring. Carbs remove a lot of the problems, but this car really is something. I'm guessing there are a lot of things that are actually removed from the car: Heater matrix (therefore no pipes in / out of bulkhead) Windscreen washers / wipers (mechanism / washerbottle) The fusebox will have been relocated inside as well as the battery....I'm assuming the wiring loom has been hidden underneath somewhere? There's no expansion tank either?? Could it be it runs from an electric water pump?? Heater matrix will have been the first thing binned!! Looks like a mk2 golf, so the fusebox will be under the dash anyway, battery will doubless be in the boot. No expansion tank is difficult to make work right. This looks to have a mk1 golf or maybe custom radiator with the expansion tank on the side where the filling cap is. However, thats not the highest point in the system, so theres a problem straight away Also, thats running a rod-change gearbox, so theres lots of unsightly cables removed there. No hydralic clutch on the bulkhead, maybe has one as part of a clever pedal box... which is where the brake servo and master cylinder will have gone as well. To answer Mr B's original question, getting it to look like the above usually involves seam welding the engine bay and lead filling plus fillering over a lot of things. On a mk2 golf the chassis legs are about 2" wide by 3" tall, so you can get a lot of things through there into the cabin. The rest is just painstaking lengthening of every wire needed so that it can be routed in an asthetically pleasing manor, hidden if possible, and then grouped with as many other wires as possible before being covered with looming tape. Lots of time, lots of money, big PITA!

Seems a bit of a silly 'fashion' to me.
Don't get me wrong, a nice clean engine bay with polished goodies can be a work of art, but binning off essential equipment, or deliberately moving bits to make them less accessible is a fugging pointless if you ask me, which you probably won't.

No. None of those things that you have just listed are really making life harder for yourself, are they? You can NATO your car and drive it to the shops. You can have a patina'd rat-bus and still be able to go on holiday in it. You can have a 2300cc Beetle running v.fast 1/4's but you can still change a fuse when it blows. But take off your wipers and your car becomes immediately useless for about 360 days of the year in the UK. REFUTE THAT!!!

But take off your wipers and your car becomes immediately useless for about 360 days of the year in the UK. Also wipers can be removed and holes covered for show, with say for example a black bung,.. then attatched for rain/MOT ... Wheres Danny Allen when you need him!?

Yes, yes, yeas... but from some of the examples given in this thread, not just wiper arms but the entire mechanisms have been removed. You can't just pop the mechanism back in in 5 mins cos it looks like it might drizzle a bit later.

Clearly they arn't daily drivers,.. but then neither me or Rmad, use our cars on a daily basis,.. in fact they are only tax 6 months of the year. I removed an essential mechanism from my car,.. the suspension,.. Rmad and DatsunCherry have done even more so... If a car can be driven, insured and MOT'd ... then wheres the problem?

Fair enough I suppose.
The suspension arguement isn't really relavant though... all you get from doing that is a bad back. Suspension is there to make you comfortable. Wipers are there so you can see where you are going & so you don't crash into things when it is raining.
ANYWAY... now that we have done with bickering:
Who is going to give a definitive guide to 'engine bay blinging'?
I like this under-bonnet cleanliness (wipers still attached, obv!), how can I achieve such spangly results from a grimy, mucky bay?

I like this kind of bickering. Just makes me giggle Mr Pog, one method would be to get a large sheet of aluminium, roughly bonnet sized and fix it with some self tappers to the inner wings thus covering all the messy stuff. Oh and everything else too. Much like the manufacturers do these days (only they make 'em out of plastic) Actually this can be done to good effect by making nicely styled covers to go over some of the fugly parts under there and painting body colour or polishing ally.

Wheres Danny Allen when you need him!? probably on men 'n' motors from memory, his orange golf wasn't as cleaned as some of the examples shown.... i think for example that it ran with windscreen wipers. it definately had carbs instead of injection, all the fuel pump gubbins was in the boot, and i think it had expansion tank and washer bottle - but stainless steel versions. it was a more usable version of what you see above.

I think Seth and IRocco have both hit nails on there proverbial heads.
To do this they've simplified what's under the hood.
I've been thinking of doing this to my 4i. Loosing the injection system and water expansion tank to clear it all up.

The dizzy position on the block also makes the plug cables easier to keep neat as you can tuck them down behind the engine.. Would probably be a bit easier to do this kind of thing when installing a new engine as oppose to doing the engine thats already there,.. if you need to re-wire anyway, you can make sure you have the extra lengths and work out all the positioning straight off.

Engine colouring and plating goes a long way too. Check out this engine pic from Lateral-G. A lot of messy bits are still there but the black gloss and contrasting satin silver makes it all look simple.

Yes, lots of the 'mess' is injection bits, the air box, inlet manifold, injector pipes, warm up regulator, cold start valve, senders etc and associated wiring. Also my engine bay pictured has PAS, extra oil cooler and A/C which adds to the clutter with extra bits and bobs you don't strictly need. Even so, there is a lot to clean up and re-route to achieve that look!
