Advice should (and I think generally is) only be given based on first hand personal knowledge. Anything else is hearsay.
And especially from those who earn a living from their knowledge.
I come across these kind of issues regularly at work where someone will come in with a problem on their boat engine saying "I was talking to someone in the pub/park/on the towpath etc and they said it's probably 'X' Our usual response is to ask what these 'experts' do for a living and 9/10 times it's completely irrelevant. If they can't earn a living from it then they're not that good are they ?!
That said, enthusiasts knowledge shouldn't be disregarded, but it should be based on personal experience imho.
I think generally it's safe to say that most things read on the interweb should be taken with a pinch of salt !

I wonder if the badges system could be used here? Maybe create a few tech-related badges to give to the guys on here who really know their onions. Just a thought. while that is a good thing, I think it could lead to a situation where someone with limited knowledge (no badge) could post up an answer that is 100% right (have the same car or whatever) but be ignored or have their reply discounted by others or the OP due to a lack of 'credentials' (the badge). Know what I mean?

Would it be an idea to split the tech section up, have a sub board for engines, bodywork/fabrication/paint, electrical etc?

Know what I mean? Agreed. I'm a self-appointed expert on Nissan S12's but others may not consider that if I'm a low count poster... Would it be an idea to split the tech section up, have a sub board for engines, bodywork/fabrication/paint, electrical etc? Don't think it will get busy enough in the tech section for that. Again personally I don't think there's any need for rules. Never seen them anywhere else. It will just restrict the amount of information that people can share thereby reducing the benefits of the section.

Its just boils down to common sense. If your not happy at some advise you've been given don't atempt it.
I was a mod for a while on one of the busier mini forums techy bit at one point, and the questions ranged from the really advanced/theoretical to the complete 17yo beginner. You have to taylor you answer to the person asking. Although you got some right wibblepoo replies and opinions the majority where good. And as said you can soon smell out the curse word from the cream.
You cant legislate for stooopidity.
Cheers
