Only one option in my opinion.... e34 or e39 540i Touring. Preferably 6-speed manual. And on gas if possible. Fast (blisteringly), comfortable, old enough to be cool (e34), modern enough to be comfortable on a run with a nice sounding stereo, good heater, quiet ride... Presentable enough to take a girl out in etc. Honestly - No offence to the Carlton/Granada brigade (Granada Scorpio estate being one of the family chariots of my youth), but let's face it, these are in a different league. And anything else would be a step down from your MX-5.

How about a Saab 9-5 Aero Estate? Approx 260bhp from the 2.3L 4-cyinder engine. Easily tuned using t7suite (free download) and as comfy and luxurious as you'd like! They don't handle bad either!

A massive fan of Aero 9-5 wagons myself and this is a good choice too but perhaps not long enough in the tooth yet?

In my mind there are 2 really cool understated retro estates, not from any of the 'badges' in the exec market. That makes them a super buy second-hand. Plus you can get some hot versions. I give you : Subaru Legacy (loads of mid 90's models sub-grand on eBay) and Mitsubishi Galant It should have all the executive toys, and is available with boggo 2.0 or 2.5 V6 As a total boggo option, the old Vectra Available in V6 again. I had an entry-level 1.8 petrol '98 Vectra estate without even electric windows. I bought it 5 years old with 35,000 miles at auction for £2300, and traded it in 2 years later with 69,000 miles for £1200. Reliable if unexciting, but regularly gave 40mpg on my commute. I almost miss it's Labrador-like easy going faithfulness.
