a lot of them frankly scare me, as there wasn't much consideration to safety back then, I mean.... who would be happy to drive this? with your literally behind the diff and your bits in firing line if it decides to let go Ask Don Garlits... This transmission explosion cost him half of his right foot It prompted his shift to rear-engined dragsters. Safer and ultimately faster, but I have to say there is something about a slingshot dragster

That Metropolitan comp coupe is ace! Not seen that one before. yeah same here, its a new one to me, was actually looking for a similar rail with a pop/anglia body but that one was too cool not to share. and because it would be rude not to , another pic here (nicked from this blog) justacarguy.blogspot.com/2011/01/jim-lakeys-1963-nash-metro-bcomp.htmlyeah rear engined dragsters are definitely safer, but slingshots just "look" right to me too. I have heard some real horror story's from back in the day as well, not least Don Garlits incident D: (saying that if someone offered me a drive in one id have to say.... yes! )

Bond Bug based Metronome METRONOME! Every time we talk about cars for an evening, my dad and I end up talking about Metronome. He was involved in race support in some small way. One story that has come up on a couple of occasions is the one where Metronome was a bit lumpy when sitting on the line - it sounded like it was running on 9 cylinders. After the run was complete, an announcement came over the tannoy, something like this: "Would Hustler Racing please report to the start line to collect their lost property." Upon reaching the start, they found one of their pistons with it's con rod securely buried in the tarmac. Oddly, that was their last run that day. They competed in the Brigton speed trials one year - before the marina was built, so there was a decent run off area for high speed runs. There was some sort of accident or breakdown on the track, so all the race cars were diverted along marine parade - my dad ended up driving it back. It was, apparantly, quite interesting to drive in traffic. Then there was the occasion that my dad was asked to go and fetch the spare supercharger from the workshop - but he didn't have a car there. He'd travelled up in the van. So Mark Stratton leant him his Ferrari Daytona. Not that I'm envious or anything, you understand. Finally, the team's transporter was a Mk1 Transit fitted with a sizable V8. I understand that it was capable of running 10s. ;D

I would love to know what the dragster is below the first picture of the metropolitan,it looks like a giant leaf blower! I know what you mean about slingshots,I think for me its down to growing up playing with '70s Matchbox cars, all big engines and even bigger wheels! Was Metronome built out of a bond bug?

Was Metronome built out of a bond bug? its some kind of weird three wheel dragster wonder why that didn't catch on... Yeah metronome "was" a bond bug, surely can't have been that old when it was made? not sure if its still on the go, but ive seen it before oh, found this while googling www.flickr.com/photos/noslho/sets/72157606393333317/detail/lots of retro drag win

The 3 wheel thing makes a bit of sense when you think of the drag factor. Maybe not with that fat old tyre on the front mind. These look proper cool and is pretty much how my 6 year old would draw one ;D

Does he look sane/happy to you? I'll get you for that... Apparently the diffs rarely let go and come out of the back and cut your gentlemens bits off. But the axles do occasionally break loose and rotate, so that the front of the diff comes round with pretty much the same results. But you're much more likely to die in a ball of invisible fire if you're running methanol, so it's best not to worry too much about where your tackle is, and worry more about not bursting into flames.
