Quick question.
Sods law on MOT week speedo cable goes and back box implodes.
Was booking test and bloke said speedo cable would need fixing as well as back box otherwise failure, thus i ordered the parts.
However, ive been told by two seperate mechanics in the past 24 hours that I cant actualy be failed on a non working speedo as the test has no way of testing if the speedo actualy works. As long as there is one present they have to pass me.
True False?

Not required on MOT at all, as far as I'm aware.
My car doesn't have a cable at the moment, been through two different testers no probs.

I may be wrong, but I seem to recall a tester I know stating that none of the gauges are MOT items, including the speedo. I defo know the speedo isn't, 'cos I've had one through with a duff unit.

I'm pretty sure its anther one of those Construction and Use regs that isn't MOT able. If the tester queries it I'd suggest you ask him to look it up.

number nine, you don't need one they never get opportunity to test it, the only time the wheels go round is on the brake test and they never get up to a speed that will register on the speedo. AFAIK the only things that they test on the dash at all is a few telltale lamps like indicator and foglight.

Just waiting for my back box to arrive now... See that kind of thing pisses me off and happens a bit over here too, one guy will say "that's a warrantable item" (we have WoFs instead of MOTs, Warrant of Fitness) and yet you go somewhere else and they will either tell you it's not or not even check it. One of the more anal semi-government places the VTNZ (Vehicle Testing New Zealand) failed a bunch of cars on something that wasn't even a warrantable item and they got in a bit of curse word about it. Frustrating process. I have to tidy up some surface rust on my roof because most places would fail it because they'll not agree that it's only surface rust been meaning to do it since I've had the car, will actually do it this time around. Luckily the garage I go to for my WoFs the guy has done the car since I've had it so he knows it almost as well as I do and is more old car friendly than most places around town, not to a point where my safety is jeopardised but just not so anal. A lot of the stuff in NZ works along the lines of "if it's there it has to work" so, if you have an empty windscreen washer bottle, then they won't work so it can fail on it. However, if you rip out the bottle, then it's not there and therefore doesn't have to work! which is handy because my car never had a windscreen washer bottle in it.

we have quite a bit of "if present, has to work" stuff especially on older cars, say late sixties to early eighties when loads of things were optional - hazard lights, reversing lights, fog lights, rear seatbelts (even front ones on very early cars). deft removing of switches is usually OK, some VWs have reversing light lenses but no wiring, switch or bulb and that's still a pass though.
sometimes the dates things apply from are so confusing they'll pass you anyway.... anyone know without checking what year cars in the UK are allowed to run with red rear and clear front indicators? no, but neither do a lot of MoT testers so my old fastback went through every year (on a 1973 reg). do you know what combination of interior and exterior mirrors are required or allowed? the thing is, most places want to rush through as many £40 MoT's as they can in a day so 10 minutes faffing around with the rule book is wasted money.
other times a bit of cunning gets you through - you don't need a electric washer pump, but you do need a way of getting water onto the windscreen. a squeezy bottle out of the window will satisfy some testers!

1/1/1964 on the red rear signals 1/1/1965 on three point seat belts. I believe there may be a requirement for the odometer to work but its not tested.

Just rang him up and said 12 people have told me x to which he just said fair do's thats fine. Thats pretty cool. "Yeah so over 100 people have now told me that my rotted-out chassis leg should not be a problem for the MoT" "Fair do's then sir, i'll write the certificate now!!!" ;D ;D

some VWs have reversing light lenses but no wiring, switch or bulb and that's still a pass though. Don't think they are a testable item from memory do you know what combination of interior and exterior mirrors are required or allowed? One exterior and one interior or two exterior and no interior other times a bit of cunning gets you through - you don't need a electric washer pump, but you do need a way of getting water onto the windscreen. a squeezy bottle out of the window will satisfy some testers! Thats going in my memory banks for next MOT - mine are sods for blocking up and that's a real handy tip!! Spare wheel is another classic - if installed it has to be of suitable quality - not there can't be tested so no fail!!! My favorite is the rust/sharp edges In Senators it's mainly rear wheel arches (they struggle to hang onto them) If it's sharp cos it rusted - fail If you cut away the rust with a nibbler or angle grinder and it's still sharp - no fail as it has been deliberately modified (weird rule) I'm sure there are others!!!
