Daihatsu Mira or Cuore. 850cc OHC three pot, carb on the Mira, EFI on the Cuore. Tiny engines but also a tiny car so they go okay and are pretty nimble. Both of ours manage 60mpg without difficulty and have been ultra reliable. Both can be found for under £500 although the Mira is quite scarce now. These are probably the nearest thing to a 'modern' proper Mini... ![](http://i464.photobucket.com/albums/rr4/Ratdat/Daihatsu/IMGP1127.jpg) ![](http://i464.photobucket.com/albums/rr4/Ratdat/Daihatsu/IMGP1128.jpg) After driving my mothers mini for a week it has given me the hankering for one of these, its made me miss my Mira Classic. The later 989cc L700 Cuore is also a very good car. 60MPG all day long, revvy little engine and happy at 80mph thanks to the 5-speed box. ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/LowriderUK/Hatsu%20Cuore/CIMG0296copy.jpg)

CBA to read the whole thread, but have K10 Micras allready be suggested? ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Got mine for free, it never let me down. Needed a new carb (freeby), set of rear shocks (50, new gearbox (100) - never let me down and always did 45 to 50MPG. Sold it for 400 after winter ;D ![](http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/5223/dsc00203zi.jpg) The wing was cosmetics and not realy needed, but was cheap too (something around 25 IIRC).

Had loads of small diesels in the last few years as a car dealer. Ive got to say that the Ax or 106 1.4 or 1.5s are about the best on fuel but there dog slow and curse word to drive. Had a old Corsa 1.5td come in on a px last month that was great on fuel and quite nippy. That 205 in Sheffield would be a good buy as they don't fall to bits like old Corsas. Ive seen some really rotten diesel polos at the auctions lately too. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

My vote goes for a B4 passat TDi. 90BHP so goes surprisingly well, happy on veg oil (not tried it yet in mine) and I'm currently getting 59MPG inc 16 miles a day sat on the M4 at 'motorway' speeds ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) And Will and Sleeper Viva can vouch for how comfy they are (and still got 50 MPG towing wills eunos back to A52 3 up). An estate would be out of budget (prob), but should pickup a 4dr for that.

Civic VEI (eg shape), these came with the vtec-e engine in 1500cc and 90bhp. Supposed to do 47mpg. One of Honda's super economical petrol car that everyone forgets.

Have a passat B4 1.9td estate that i got recently (75hp of loud smelly slowness), and even though it's very slow to get going it will cruise at 70 happily and feels very solid. Not properly calculated the MPG yet but i'll wait until after i've had a chance to give soem new oil, filters etc but for now it seems to be doig pretty damn good in fuel considering it's size and doesnt matter much how fast you go, in fact it seems to like cruising on motorways just as much as chugging along country roads. The size of it is awesome too, rear seats fold flat and make the already huge boot massive. Good car all round. They're cheap here in Ireland and even cheaper in Uk where most of you guys are

They are great cars, the TD's are a much simpler setup (prob better for long term survival), but I can't fault the TDi. After a full service, and not having to sit in Bristol rush hour traffic for 2 weeks (only 4 miles a day in it, but takes an hour ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) ) my MPG rose to 65! There are those on UKPassats that claim to be getting over 70mpg, and this is from a big car. And they can be run on oil as well ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) In an ideal world, it would have a 6spd box as sitting on the motorway, 70 is 2500RPM so it is on boost, if it could drop to 1500 RMP it would be even better. And they are soo comfy to drive, it was an 8hr round trip to rescue Wills Eunos and it was comfy all the way.

as Bruce said ive bought a 106 1.5 diesel, its slow, horrible to drive round town ( surprisingly at 70mph on the motorway i drove 400 miles and its was fine !) but no matter how hard you drive it, ive never managed to get less that 63mpg, i would try and get an astra 1.7td/cavalier/vectra with the isuzu engine. or something with power stering, leccy windows etc as the 106 has none of the above making it bad to drive around town, i love the economy, but I'm going to be selling it soon as I'm doing alot less miles so can afford something better !

I have to say, we have a (I'm not sure about model number and such) a 1.4 3 door hatchback 1996 Civic, with the big headlights. Our's is the 1.4 and it's super economical for it's size. 45mpg is easy and on the motorway taking it easy it's gotta be high 50's! Plus when u want it to go they can turn a fair pace. My brother has a 1.8 n/a 205 diesel, and i gotta say it's suprisingly fast, I'm trying to talk him into letting us strip it and go on track days for giggles!

Mine has been running on 70/30 diesel-veg mix since i got it, will do more once i've given it fresh engine oil, filters etc. Much slower than yours of course seeing as the tdi has what 95 bhp or something? compared to 75 so mine sits around 3000 rpm at 70 but that doesn't seem to bother it, it's been very polite with it's motorway fuel consumption so far. I'll agree on the comfort too, great car for long journey's i've found. I've got plenty of space and headroom and the seat isn't too narrow for me for once (in 6ft 2 and 20 stone so not a small guy and i hate being cramped in a car)

I'll have to get Jimbo200SX up on here. His 106 1.5D was far from dull to drive. Yes it was slow, but it was frugal and handled lovely (mind you, it was lowered and had fresh rubber sitting on 205 15" Speedlines. One thing to bear in mind with an old car is not just the buying cost, but the cost/ease of availability of parts. The older you get with some parts, the prices will inevitably become more expensive. However, I guess it depends on how long you wish to keep the car for. I may try another 'cheap' way of getting a car. The 106 may be going onto LPG with a spare kit I have lying around ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) .

Just out of interest, what are you getting from your 106? I don't work out mpg but I get around 320-330 miles mainly round town from mine...
