The tyres fitted to the 280's from the facory were definitely 195/50/15's. Your inspiration looks like similar to one of my old 2.8i's I've got another one now very similar to yours that i want to get looking just the same again just as you do .... we'll have to meet at some shows!

Well, it seemed the easiest way to evaluate what the old Capri needed after 6 years of sitting doing nothing was to bung it in for an MOT and see what if failed on. The 2 mile trip to the MOT station was the longest drive under her own steam for 6 years. Despite running rough due to old fuel and being massively overdue for a service, the old girl passed the emmissions ok. Brakes were out of balance but I'm hoping cleaning up the old disks and some fine abrasive on the pads will cure that. Tyres passed the MOT but I don't trust them as they are so old and probably flat-spotted where it's been sitting so long. She needs track rod ends (no big deal, they aren't expensive). The only concerning bit was some welding required round the strut tops. It has had replacement panels welded in some time in the past, but these were only spot welded to the inner wings, that used to be ok but current MOT regs say they should be seam welded in. The only heart stopping moment was when it overheated half way through the MOT test I had horrible thoughts of head gasket failure and other expensive problems but it turned out to be a stuck thermostat. It free'd itself off but I think I'll change it to be on the safe side So, hopefully it will all get done in the next few days and she'll be in for a re-test next week. Stand by for the next thrilling instalment of project Capri

Not too bad then. A shame about the welding but the other stuff should be easy enough.

MOT stuff done, just needed track rod and new front brake pads, the MOT tester only asked for a minimal bit of welding to be done so all ready for a re-test tomorrow - fingers crossed ;D You may have seen my other post about vinyl wrapping - on balance I think I've decided against it so the old girl may get some fresh paint this summer. In the meantime I need to decide about wheels. The 13" pepperpots on the car are fine but I'd like new tyres and there isn't much choice of 205/60 x 13's. I'd quite like the 15" seven spoke alloys fitted to the 280 Brooklands but they aren't cheap. Otherwise I quite like these......... JBW Minilite's - available in 15" x 7" or 15" x 8" flavour. 15" gives a much better choice of tyres. The big question is will the 8" wide ones fit on a standard height 2.8i without bodywork modifications? Also, what size tyres would you guys recommend?

What et's are they?
Should be able to fit 8's on no problems, I'm tucking 8's by quite a large amount with 185 tyres on but i have 205's on 8's et 0 at the back and that is fine as well, I have rolled the arches though, but on a standard height car it shouldn't be a problem.
I'd probably go for 15x8 with a 195 tyre should easily fit then.

Right, sold the MR2 so got some funds to throw at Project Capper. Got the MOT stuff done and adding up costs of respray and new wheels to see what the budget will allow and all was looking good for the MOT re-test and a chance to get the old girl on the road but now the fuel pump has decided it doesn't want to function any more Will the beast ever get on the road??!!

Don't you just love old Fords? Passed the MOT and broke down on way home! Mobile update while waiting for AA :-(
Update - after an hour of fannying around me and the AA man (who was very good and very helpful) failed to fix it
Any suggestions what this may be? no power to fuel pump - maybe the relay? but - if you wire the fuel pump direct from the battery the pump works but it still won't start? and, if you disconnect the air flow meter and squirt easy-start direct in it runs on that but then cuts out........... I'm wondering if there are 2 problems - 1. an issue with power supply to the fuel pump 2. an issue with fuel supply to the engine
Anyone know someone who would transport the car from Woking to that Ford specialist at Bracknell for a reasonable price? Think it would be easier to drag it over there and says 'here's my credit card - call me when its all done!'

Is there power getting to the cold start injector, warm up regulator and idle bypass valve?
Erm. Silly question - is there any petrol in it? Shouldn't cause the fuel pump thing, but it's a new-to-you car so you probably can't be sure of the fuel gauge yet.

Fuel gauges in capris are really quite bad a lot of the time.
I'd say it was a fuel supply issue rather than electric if you can work the pump direct off the battery.

Not sure about power to cold start etc. The fuel guage is rubbish but I put 2 gallons in before the MOT and 2 gallons after and apart from being on tickover during the test it's only 3 miles each way to the garage - I know 2.8's are rubbish on fuel but it shouldn't have run out already!!

The big question is will the 8" wide ones fit on a standard height 2.8i without bodywork modifications? Also, what size tyres would you guys recommend?cant see why not. a mate had 8x13s on a mk2 3.0 a few years ago. i guess the the other concern is the condition of the springage on the back-both my 2.8i's that i had in the past didnt need lowering blocks cos the leafs had gone saggy

I then wanted to start cleaning the interior as it stinks of wood (the material not the smell of a boner) best quote ever!

we, it's not running and I can't work out why so going to concede defeat and get it dragged into an old Ford specialist not too far from me. Had some time today so decided to remove the towbar - this picture doesn't do justice to just how ugly it was! It was a horrible home made thing made of old angle iron - the rear bumper had the middle cut out of it and it had been bent down and welded to the towbar frame - all in all a pig to remove Anyway - after much cursing and liberal use of an angle gringer I had the back end back together with a shiny new old stock bumper I got on e-bay last week for a bargain price ;D Hopefully you agree it looks better now

Love it, shame about the starting issues, I had the same head scratching problems with my 205, gave it to the garage, and they played around with it and lo and behold, now it works. Nothing specific although the flap on the AFM was stuck. Seems fine now! Good luck with it, looks so much better with that fresh bumper

If this car was a Horse I would shoot it!!Poxy thing broke down on the way back from passing the MOT, just a fuel pump I thought (or hoped) but it seems the fuel pump is knackered, it's overfuelling as well and to cap it all the head gasket seems to have gone when it overheated during the MOT I am rapidly losing the love for this car and am seriously tempted to cut my losses and sell it and go look for another - I know the jobs aren't that serious in the grand scheme of things and it is still a solid 2.8i with a years MOT but I'm getting sick of the sight of it parked up on my drive and not working. Anyone want a 2.8i with a years MOT but you will have to trailer it home?
