I recently bought this car from another Retro Rides member, with a short MoT and an MoT failure certificate that included three problems: high emissions, a knackered suspension bush and a loose centre section of the exhaust system. The car drove absolutely fine so I figured I might as well have it as it would make a perfect daily driver.
I researched the potential high emissions problem and replaced the Lambda sensor with a new sensor specific to this car (not a cheap universal fit sensor). I couldn't find anything wrong with the suspension or the exhaust.
I took the Merc for an MoT and it passed. The emissions were fine, the apparently knackered suspension bush is barely worn and did not even come up as an advisory and whilst there is a missing rubber mount, the exhaust is securely attached. The MoT tester gave the car a clean bill of health.
I took the car home, gave it a proper clean inside and out, including an Autoglym polish. I bought matching paint (cost me £11) and touched up any chips and marks (there weren't many but I like my cars perfect). I replaced the "1" digit on the boot with a "2" so the bagde now reads C280. I was very happy with my purchase.
This morning, I took my wife and 16 month old boy out in the Merc and when we hit traffic on route to London the engine started to surge between 700-1500 RPM. The car drove fine to our destination and back home but the surging is still there, not all the time and it was fine starting from cold. The engine does not cut out, runs at the correct temperature, does not smoke, rattle and there are no warning lights on the dash.
I am supposed to be going on a couple of long work related trips next week and I don't want to drive this car in case it lets me down. I don't know much about car electrics and I have no time to start fiddling with this car. I have no idea what is wrong with it. I've checked for vacuum leaks and loose connections in the engine bay, but everything seems ok to me.
Interior is very clean apart from some wear to the steering wheel and gearknob. Seats are like new. All the electrics work.
Exterior is in good condition, there are no scratches, just a couple of car park dinks in the doors and what rust there is (mostly around the wheel arches) I've touched up so it's barely visible. The car looks great in a deep metallic blue with the Sport 16 inch alloys. This car is also the post facelift model, which means it has nicer trim, exterior mouldings and rear lights.
Apart from the engine surging, the engine runs fine, the gearbox is good, clutch bites low, brakes are good, steering is good, no knocks from the suspension, car drives straight and true.
If it weren't for the engine surging I would not be selling it.
A C180 Sport in this spec with a full MoT is easily worth a grand. I am selling this for half price. If you know anything about car electrics and you can get it fixed, it will be a bargain. If you are like me and know jolly pain in the backside all about car electrics you may wish to take a chance and get it looked at by a mechanic....
I only have the green slip (not filled in) but will give a full receipt and will forward the logbook on receipt. The car is still taxed for two months so no worries about not having the full logbook.
Whilst I don't have time to take this to a mechanic that knows what he's talking about, I will be doing research on the internet (Merc forum etc) to try to find out what is causing the surging. If I find out and fix the problem, the car will be immediately removed from sale and I will use it as my daily as intended.
