Rubbish title, I know.
After looking through Seth's lovely thread about the Ace Cafe Spring Riot I was quite taken with one particular car....
My complete ignorance/lack of knowledge of a lot of American cars was compunded when it turns out to be, in fact, an Australian car. I'd originally guessed it to be a Mercury Cougar. How wrong could I be? (maybe the fact it's RHD should have hinted that it wasn't )
So, while trying to broaden my American/Australian car based knowledge and after looking more into the Australian Chargers (which 30psi kindly indentified the car as)....which are very, very cool BTW, I stumble across an image of another car which very loudly proclaims "BRUTE" to me:
WOW....WANT...OOOF...all words running around in my mind at the time and who can blame me?
Some more searching and I find out it's a Holden Monaro HQ from circa 1972. Off I go looking for more images of the brute....but 99% of the cars I turn up look totally different. Most Holden Monaro's of that era look more like this:
Cool, yeah, but not the look I was expecting.
Some more digging into various Australian cars and I come across these pics which turn out to be titled "72 Holden Monaro":
I'm confused. 99% of Holden Monaro's look like the round light model above, but two of the search results tell me that there was a '72 Monaro that had the rectangular lights (which I much prefer - it's such a brute)
Seeing as the silver car is the best result I've found so far, I start reading the webpage for it (LINK HERE) and amongst all the history of the car is this bit of text: "in the early eighties when it was featured in a Dulux Durolux poster showing the car with the WB Caprice front end"
Off I go on another search for WB Caprice and turn up this:
So it would seem that I was kinda along the right lines all along. It turns out the 'Brute' is a Holden Monaro HQ but with a WB Caprice front end fitted. Maybe that's why I couldn't turn up too much info on them.
I like them....I like them a LOT! Here is another one I found. A true brute if ever I saw one:
All of this then reminds me of a car I've always liked: the Holden Sandman - most notable from the van driven by Mad Max in the first film:
Another 'Brute' that I've always loved and admired. Boy would I really like to own one of them. Not the same front as the WB Caprice but similar in looks and 'brutishness'
While pondering the whole 'Brute' thing, I remember another car I am particularly fond of and which has a similar look to the Holden ones above: the DeTomaso Longchamp
Yep, that also does it for me in a big way. Have some more shots (including a few from out very own Dbizzle's SuckSqueezeBangBlow blog)
So, there you have it...how one photo of a car I knew nothing about has lead to a delve into more cars I knew nothing about and some nice education for me along the way. I LOVE 'Brute' cars and would like to see some more...what have you guys got for me?
Nothing sleek, nothing 'beautiful'....just pain BRUTE ;D
