Looking for the Bagheera I suddenly remembered the Rancho. I used to have a green one (diecast) when I was a kid and thought it was über kool, mainly because no one else had such a beast in the sandbox (Except my brother and his sucking Star Wars AT-ST!) anyway, any other cool Retro SUV-esque wheels?

not much old suv style around because people used to be sensible enough to realise that an estate car would suffice apart from the yanks with their ford broncos etc..

Speaking of toys, I've always wondered whether this Matchbox model was based on a real vehicle? The 'Freeman Intercity Commuter' dates from the late sixties, and was very forward in its thinking.

Speaking of toys, I've always wondered whether this Matchbox model was based on a real vehicle? The 'Freeman Intercity Commuter' dates from the late sixties, and was very forward in its thinking. It wasn't ever a real vehicle. The design was one of the entries in a car styling competition held by the weekend Telegraph magazine. The name comes from the bloke who designed it, P. F. Freeman from Coventry. Here's his original sketch... Strangely it was not one of the winning designs, only a runner up so no idea why Matchbox chose to use it rather than one of the winners. -Ed

Excellent, cheers Eddie. I had a hunch you might know. Talking on concepts, Lancia and pininfarina teamed up and showed this at various motorshows in 1978. Lancia never chased up the design, but Nissan did 5 years later with their Prairie. I believe you did something rather wonderful with your one didn't you Eddie?

How easy/hard was that conversion, Ed? Pretty easy. I used a silvia engine but it'd be even easier with a bluebird turbo one. There's a bit of messing about sorting the EFI fuel system out (flat underfloor tank = bad fuel surge) so I fabricated a surge tank and make a system with both low and high pressure pumps. Exhaust is very simple to make too. Most of the weight is up the front in a Prairie so they have awesome traction from a standstill for a FWD. We recorded a 0-60 of 6.8 which is very respectable (and a top end of over 135mph!). Stock Prairies are only 1050kg and suprisingly they are quite aerodynamic too. Torque steer with the stock driveshafts was pretty severe and the handling scary but very fun. Go on... build one... you know you want to ;D

That car gives new meaning to "wolf in sheeps clothes". 6.8 sec Turbo Prairie?! That is so wrong and I'd love one! They rust pretty hard, don't they? Yes, they rust pretty badly. I had the weld all along where the floor meets the inner arches in the back and around the fuel filler mount. The body isn't really all that rigid either so any bad rot can cause some severe structural problems. If i did another turbo one, I'd probably weld the rear sliding doors shut to strenghten it a bit. I did start fitting a twin cam turbo into it after the SOHC threw a rod through the block but with one thing and another it never got back on the road. It's one project i would love to resurect one day. Drag racing a Prairie would be big fun ;D -Ed
