I've got to replace the rear shock absorbers on my mk4 Escort and i can't get the damn top nuts off The haynes manuals says to put an allen key to hold shocker rod, then use a swan neck spanner to uno the nut, which i have tried, but the nuts are nylock and do up soooo tight, the allen key holes have rounded off . So i tried jamming a bigger allen key into the hole but the same thing happens. So i'm now thinking of other ways to get them nuts off. I can't grind them off as they sit in like a 'dish', so the grinder can't get to them easily. I also thought about cutting through the shocker rod and pushing it up into the car but i'm not sure if that'll work? Here are the offening nuts... Any ideas?

Drill it? Not got that far to open that hole up until you break through to the thread.

stilsons/mole grips on the damper strut and blowtorch the nyloc, it won't put up much fight after a bit of heat...
best bet with these is an impact gun to do the initial loosening jolt that's needed. (but not something that lots of people have access to obv.)
Or as there is a lot of thread poking through the top of the nut - you could cut a groove in it for a large screwdriver to hold the strut whilst you apply the spanner again

Impact gun works a treat like Jason said, you can get cheap electric ones that work off your fag lighter.... direct.tesco.com/q/R.207-4508.aspxWorth its weight in gold, brilliant for ball joint bolt etc - go buy one.

Happens alot with polos too.
Jack it up, Get some big hefty molegrip/viceclamps on the shaft from under the car to stop it turning. Then hold that (or get a helper to) and undo the top nut.
In extreme cases ive actually welded a bar to the shaft in the past to stop it turning, I.e when someone has crossthreaded a nut on, Or over torqued it..

If you've got some extra torx bits you can hammer one of those in the allen key hole, although the impact gun tends to take car of it. Don't scratch the chromed damper rod too much if you plan on reusing the dampers.

The other way is to put a set of these (a Stilson or pipe wrench): On the suspension piston rod or casing (whichever way is facing upwards), and then undo it! It's worked 5 times out of five. It grips it like a mutha - every tool box should have one (and they come in small sizes).

The torx hammering method works well if you want to re-use the shock, and have an angled ring spanner, but if you like butchering then drilling works too

Well, wouldn't you know! I've never had a car with that kind of shock mount
