Strange considering it was running and riding fine before Compession doesnt suddenly dissapear. Unless one of the rings has shattered... In which case id just pull the barrel off and see whats going on in there...

Yeah thats probably the next step. It was running fine before yeah, but this bike has never followed logic and it sparked before i had a crash, a crash shouldnt stop it sparking, but it did!
I might take it off tonight and have a look.

It should still run with a slight compression leak. Sounds like too much fuel or oil to me.
Will it run on easystart??

Before you start pulling it apart whip off the air inlet hose to the carb and almost fully cover the inlet side of the carb with your hand whilst kicking it over - that will make it drag a bit more fuel through and may just get it to start.

So might be a curse word to do , But if he can get his hand down there while kicking its gotta be worth a go... Does the choke/ enrichment circuit work on the carb?

Hmmm... obvious questions, but please humor me.
Are the plugs gapped correctly? Do the plugs come out wet after you try to start? Do the plugs smell of petrol? Are the plugs oily? Can you hear an inlet suck? Can you feel a blow from the exhaust? Is the petrol / oil Fresh? If you try to bump it does it fire???

Are the plugs gapped correctly?
Yes
Do the plugs come out wet after you try to start?
They appear to, yes.
Do the plugs smell of petrol?
Yes
Are the plugs oily?
don't appear to be
Can you hear an inlet suck?
Not sure, i'll have to give that one a look
Can you feel a blow from the exhaust?
I get blow when the exhaust is off, ive not tried it with it on. Another thing to try.
Is the petrol / oil Fresh?
Both petrol and oil are fresh.
If you try to bump it does it fire???
No clutch rigged up as of yet because I left the cover off for stator work, i'll try that at some point.
I'll give it my full attention on the weekend! i havent had time in the evenings.

Righty, Did a tiny bit of work on the bike, in-between building up a drive shaft for the mini. First things first, got the seat on: Much comfier than before, tidies the bike up too. Didnt cost me anything, and including glueing, probably only took me an hour. Not perfect, but pleased overall! Tried to photograph what looked like a compression leak, not sure how clear these photos are: I tried the palm over the carb trick, i did get fuel on my palm, but not much at all, barely misted it, this a sign of something?

Hi, those rings look fine, theres obviously a bit of blow by but not enough to stop it running, are you 110% sure that the timing is correct and the woodruff key is in properly?

If the woodruff key is the thing that holds the flywheel in place, then yes thats in properly.
Tell you what, i'll time it again tomorrow and get a second opinion from my dad.

Just looking at those pictures again it looks very very wet up the exhaust port, has it by any chance filled the crankcase with fuel? If it has it will just soak the plug instantly. Whereabouts are you i'm pretty certain I could have the damn thing going in about an hour....Last thing i can remember having so much trouble with was a worn out YZ 490 which required a tow (2 up to stop the back wheel locking) from a transit to wake from its slumbers

I agree, piston looks worn but servicable, and bike probably needs a damn good bump starting (mine always did when flooded...)

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

I'm near farnham in surrey, no doubt miles away from you. I hope I'm not being totally useless, my dads had british bikes and never had such a problem so its no doubt flummoxing him too. Tomorrow i'll probably gap the points again, get the clutch installed and see if it will bumpstart!
