is it just me or is that some pretty heavy scoring up the right hand side of the piston?
I think id still whip the head and barrel off... Check the bore, Make sure the rings arnt stuck , Give it a de-coke as 2 strokes need from time to time...
base and head gasket cant cost more than a few quid for this can it?

What do you mean by piston rings sticking?
I think you might be right about the sump being full of fuel. I regapped the points and the plug and the spark was a really good one after that. To quote my dad "best spark this bike has had".
Pushed it to the top of the hill, put it in second gear and went down the hill on it, tried to bump it but it wasnt having any of it. When i took the plug out it was wet.
Whats the next step, decoke? tow it with something?

Id just give it a full top end rebuild. Decoke, new gaskets, see where that gets ya..
As for sticking rings. The 2stroke gunk gets between the grooves in the piston and can cause the rings to get stuck in place. Meaning the piston could be slapping around in there rather than actually compressing.

Hang on it was running ok prior to the electrical probs wasn't it - it didn't stop with a bang or rattle or anything. If the top end doesn't come off right now, it's one less thing to worry about. Decoke won't make any (real) difference to getting it started the main place they coke up is the exhaust port and that looks OK - i take it that you can feel compression when you turn it over on the kickstart?

Yup, can certainly feel compression.
When it was really playing up beforehand, it was backfiring, i don't even get that now. Ive ascertained its getting fuel, ignition has all been replaced and its got a good spark. Next move?
And I'm sorry this is dragging on, it has to work eventually!

Triple check the timing, make sure the woodruff key hasn't sheared off, change the plug for a fresh one and try the big hill again....

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

No special tools needed and its piece of mind. You could spend forever chasing faults and in the end it be something simple like a leaking gasket. And feeling compression is totally different to actually having enough compression.. Take my spacy for example. Feels like it has loads But with a guage on it , Its less than half what my running one has.

Hmmm... cheers for the reply D&O.
Sounds like it's flooding. Have you touched the carb at all??? I'd check the float level.

Right, been working in conjunction with terraroot and hes come to the conclusion i had an air leak, causing it to run lean and thus causing these problems.
Looks like I'm gunna need new disc seals, new piston and rings, probably a rebore and a full gasket set.
Piston will come off tomorrow to check sizing.

Hey all, it's been rather a while since ive been on here (nearly a year)! so thought i'd come back and revive this thread as i bought Jono's GP. anyways i managed to get it running.. it turned out to be carb issues and leaks etc.. it didnt run great though - needs some serious fine tuning but happy it ran anyway!.. on to stripdown. managed to strip everything and painted the frame in autumn red and sorted the electricals out labelled everything etc and all's good! got a few problems though, i took the cylinder head off and the cylinder is i awful condition aswell as the piston which is also why Jono was having lots of problems! so I'm trying to source a new 100cc cylinder for it but can't find one anywhere. i came back here and noticed Aerofall was breaking a gp so BUMP TO AEROFALL and anyone else who knows anyone or has any parts. kind regards to everyone and it's good to be back ! Jake. P.s. ill get some piccies up as soon as i can
