I am really feeling the need now, as much as my Vectra is nice, I prefer old-skool. Trouble is, I am doing between 20 and 30k a year, can only afford one car, and must have boot-space for a wheelchair. Coupled to that selling the Vec will only net me a max of £600, what do people recommend? I want something pre'90, Sierra was my first thought, love Fords and i've had one, but finding a good manual one for less than 1k is tricky. Thoughts Ladies and gents? Must add, 2.0 is prob my max in engine size, being 20.

There should be plenty of things about, I think it is fair to say that most things you come across are going to need a little tlc! Volvo's are cheap could also try looking at a cortina's maybe?! Plenty of cheap motors out there if you look hard enough

Something like a Sierra is probably spot on really. No retro is going to like doing 20-30k p/yr without some attention and care BMW E30 touring? pretty smart as standard maybe one of these

I know, not too bad with the spanners. Didn't think about a BM, thought they would be out of my price range, but have seen a few mk3 Grannies

I think the big problem is the mileage you do, anything retro will need a certain amount of attention to keep it going. I'd reckon a Mk2 Golf or Jetta would be your best bet personally, find a decent one and it'll be a great car.

Has to be a fairly decent size, sort of Sierra/ Cav cos its got a bootfull of wheelchair, and normally 4 up. TBH i've never really liked the Omega, i had a choice between one and my Vec lol, both 2.0. Like i said i don't mind gettin my hands dirty to keep it goin, just seein what you guys could recommend

I was going to suggest an e30 touring but doing 20k+ a year I don't think a BM would be best choice.
hmmmmmm pre 90 and has boot space.
Capri Escort Combi / estate Orion cavalier Nova saloon various vans.
Its hard to think of something retro that could take 20k a year.
Why not keep the vectra and get yourself something retro and insure it on classic car insurance with limited milleage? that should keep costs down.

One of these will p*ss the mileage you need to do, will carry 4 passengers in comfort, take a small semi detatched house and an outside bog in the boot ( if you get a hatchback) will keep up with moderns, handle like moderns and not crucify you at the pumps....dependent on the wide choice of engines.. Ive had a few of these, along with Sierras and i have to say these are as good, if not better than their contemporaries, including more expensive stuff. You wont get better for the money.

Saab 9000? Insurance may be a killer if you go for a decent 2.3 effort though.

20-30k a year when you are 20! What kind of job are you doing or do you have a long commute. I am a fiar bit older and drive an old BMW a similar distance every year and theses cars will happily do this mileage but the fuel bill is crippling. I am glad I am losing my job and my long commute will be history as the fuel bill is enormous. I would think about how you can reduce that mileage. Fuel prices are only going one way.

Really? I was talking about the 80's MK2 version. I thought that would be massive?

Can't see it being much bigger, i could get the chair in but nothing else.
I'm primary carer for my Grandparents, who i live with, and my mum who lives a small distance away, all adds up after shopping, hospital trips etc. Not really much i can do to reduce it, i already do as little driving as i can. Cheers for the help guys!!
