as title looking at building one for some fun/promo work ive been offered a van at just over scrap as its got no t&t so its no real loss to cut it up as it will need welding & body work anyway !!! now i know just chopping the back off the van doesnt make it a road legal/safe conversion so ive got some help off a mate that does hotrods to help if i decide to do it . so what i need to know is rules & regs on the sva test as they seem to change day by day & with who you talk to !!! everything will be the same apart from the load area & added strengthening so what will i have to watch out for where is the closest testing station for manchester ? i know a lot of people will say don't bother but i just want to see if i can do it ( plus its practice) ;D

From what i have read its almost impossible unless it has a seperate chassis, theres no class to test it or make it roadworthy legally. best bet is to speak to aceadvice or read up on the ace website

from what i remember from reading on here, theres no sva for commercial vehicles, and a pick up would probably be classed as such, so you'd be off to a sticky start, but I may have misread / misremembered along the way

Virtually impossible. Once you've chopped it about it'll be classed as a modified commercial vehicle. However, there's no testing class for modified commercial vehicles.
There is a class for amateur built commercials - but it won't count as amateur built.
What sort of van is it?

just becuase its been done in the past doesnt make it legal. the vehicles pictured above only need flagging at an mot, or you to get stopped by vosa, and theyll be making a one way trip over the weighbridge.
as has been pointed out its impossible to legally register it unless its a seperate chassis vehicle.

That DAF is legal. It is made to factory specifications and is an accurate replica of an original 33 pick up. Has also been passed by VOSA and now registered as a pick up

I'm suprised by how good that volvo looks !!!! just needs a rear window but has said what i really want to know is how to do it so it will be legal as i don't really think i would be happy at doing the work & having the car impounded (been there done that ) as i hate walking !!!!

I think we'd need ACE to give us the definitive answer on this - but isn't the missing SVAIVA class only when converting a car into a commercial - and thus taking a vehicle that is originally a commercial be OK?

there is n o class for modified commercials, how ever you get there, there IS a class for amatuer built which i think you cfould put a pickup truck through, but you have to do a lot more work than just cutting the bcak of for them to consider the vehicle "built" rather than modified.
If you really want a car cut down into a pickup, buy one of the japanese pickups that run full chassis and mount your car on that, once the body is no longer structural you can do more or less what you like with it.

Has also been passed by VOSA and now registered as a pick up The only way that could be legal is if the modificatiosn were done before 1998 and even then it should be on a Q plate If doen since 1998 then ,sorry, it's NOT legal regardless of what's on the logbook:( I would say you have your VOSA and DVLA s mixed up possibly ? Factory specs have no relevance as unless it left the factory as a pick up then it isn't a pick up, it's a saloon and once that monococque is modified it negates the original reg. I would say it may have had an inspection by a DVLA official AT a VOSA premises and that, based on an innacurate understanding of Swansea Policy rules, they have incorrectly allowed it through. Isn't the first and won't be the last and it still leaves open to sent for tests later.

Unfortunately it's about modifying the monococque even if it was a van in the first place. However as proven on here you CAN convert an estate into a van providing all work is strengthening and no cutting takes place. The good news is that we are told the new N1( Light goods ) BIVA , due in November 2011, WILL have a class for pre registered cars converted into pickups
