Good work fella, but I refuse to believe that there was any oil left in that box, after it 'dumped it's load' all over the boot and spare wheel well of my smoker last year!
Skip that, wrong fuggin' 'box.

aaaargh my eyes! could have been some kind of warning as i was scrolling down! i hate pointless design changes.... trying to source a back door for a mondeo in a certain colour. need a mk1 one which are rare in this colour, as the billions of mk2s available have the lock mechanism something ridiculous like 10mm further up. otherwise identical pressings. gah! |

YO! Back in the garage tonight. First of all I had to swap the bellhousings over:  But whats this? Looks like 'Shippams meat paste, (aluminium flavour). Slightly alarming as this is the box I am about to install. What do you do? They guy said it worked fine and he didn't strike me as a conman. So, clean it out and carry on.  not too painful. Now the clutch looked much happier:  Now I boshed the box back in; a mild war but not too bad. This time it bolted up Ok and no clutch issues:  the gearlever hole is not a million miles out, quite encouraging:  Next the slave cylinder looked well unhealthy:  Obv I didnt have a new one, or any seals, so I cleaned it up and polished the inside with some scotch pad stuff. The seal looked OK to me so i cleaned everything up and put it back together. I boshed it on and bled it: works perfectly. OK its in! This Carina is now a 5-speeder. I havent yet put the prop back on because I need to roll it in and out of the garage, and I don't know if one of the gears is engaged or not.  Jobs still to do: 1) CLEAN GARAGE UP! What a disgusting sh1thole, there are about 5 pints of gear oil on the floor.  2) Sort out the gearlever hole:  For that I need to buy a metal nibbler to make a neat job, otherwise i'll make a right mess. 3) drink some beer. Finally, i was alarmed by how much this car flexes when you jack it up, I thought I had it well supported:  but even jacked up like that its a proper war to open the doors. I have looked underneath and found ZERO ROT!!!!111!! so they must be naturally bendy as hell in the bodyshell. Thats all folks!!! |

excellent work Mr B. Inspiration to us all. Why can't the haynes manual be as simple as this? Do you know whether there's much difference between the TA14 and TA12 gearbox set up? I Should start seeking MG/Minor forums for 5 speeders.

i'm sure theres no difference between the TA12 and TA14. Saying that, what do I know about it? not a lot judging from this carry-on! This box is from a TA40 Celica 1.6ST. You should defo find a souped-up minor or spridget to pinch the box from!!! Revenge is sweet!!!
Incidentally the lad I bought the gearbox off is breaking a whole car, is there anything else worth robbing off one of those Celicas??
Another question (maybe to Racer86) is: Is the 4A-GE engine a similar stud pattern to this old 1.6 SOHC (might even be OHV) engine that I have got?

Nice one pleased its gon back together well. Thats one advantage with modern cars they are designed to be stiff. Older cars just ahd a load of metal bunged together and hoped for the best. I think my maestros were the worst cars for thatyou couldnt open or close the passenger front doors when the back end was jacked up. Rear strut brace welded in sorted that though.

Another question (maybe to Racer86) is: Is the 4A-GE engine a similar stud pattern to this old 1.6 SOHC (might even be OHV) engine that I have got? To be honest I'm not sure. The box i have is a T40 (i think) from a TA22 Celica and i was told by the guy i got it off it would fit most toyota engines up to the early 90's That is all i know, embarrasingly it amounts to 1 1/2 lines, but its the taking part that counts! ;D |

The series of box is somewhat irrelevant, what matters is the bellhousing adapter. For instance you can get a W->A Bellhousing, but they're rare as fook, which would fit a W-series box (you know, like the stron ones in the Supras) to an A series engine 3A, 4A, etc.
What series of engine is in the Carina at the moment?
I wrecked an AA40 Carina that had a 3A-U and a T50 in it, sold the T50 to a nice old duffer for his Lotus 7 replica, he needed it to put behind, you guessed it, a 4AGE.
The T50, T40, K50 and K40 and W50, W57, W58 series boxes are found on a variety of different cars, so you need to make sure the bellhousing is the one you want.

I think the box is a T50 and the engine is a 1588cc 2T (overhead valve).

Ok, then your bellhousing won't just bolt straight onto the engine, but if you get an A-series bellhousing for the T50 you'll be away laughing if you want to 4AGE. Of course, every Toyota chum wants to 4AGE and T->A Bellhousings over here are ludicrously overpriced, especially with the whole AE86 parts price of doom era. What I would do, is go the 3T-GTEU route Seeing as you already have a usable gearbox etc for it and it should bolt in in place of the 2T with a few minor mods, you'd be away laughing! |
