Anyone here got a trade policy?
How much do you pay ? where is best to get one?
I have a different car every couple of months, and now its getting difficult to swap from car to car as they say " the policy you have with us wont cover the new car" ect.. as well as some just being amazingly expensive.
Also I'm not sure when this sorn insurance comes in, but i have a car outside taxed and unisured, so i need to cover it.
Ive got 3 open policys now but only 1 is being used. (non refundable so i didnt cancel)
Ive been driving 13 years, never had a claim but still get quoted over 1k for some average cars.

I'm with tradewise. think it was about 650 for cover on anything up to 30k value. I'm still covered if I need to drive stuff more expensive, but not for its full value only the first 30k. I'm 26, no accidents, no claims. its the pretty standard practice of I can drive anything, but I have to inform them if its my car and I keep it for more than 14 days, so it then gets added to the MIDB but theres a dedicated line for doing that so its quick and easy, unlike some others ive been with- for example DNA expected you to pay more to be able to use that service, they updated it by emails- except they never bothered to do it so i was constantly getting pulled by the fuzz for no insurance, and i had to carry my docs on me all the time. I got demonstration cover and some other guff I didnt really need thrown in with it too. pretty good for the price I thought.
one thing to be careful of is restrictions on ages of cars- some don't cover over 25 years, and some only cover you tpft on cars over 15 or 20 years old even though you get full cover on newer ones.
oh, and avoid DNA like the plague, no matter how good a price they give you. ive never dealt with a worse company in my life!

Make sure you check restrictions properly as mentioned previously some don't cover cars over 25yrs, and others specifically exclude some makes/models. I can't remember which company it was but one I was quoted on wouldn't cover Porsche/TVR or anything "exotic" irrespective of age or value.

The only odd exclusion on mine is I can't drive my spouses car. I've no idea why they added that exclusion but it doesn't bother me anyway as I'm on her policy. Also not covered on two wheels but I can add it on.
Mines with RSA (Roadrunner) same as Nigel. Been with them for about 16 or 17 years. Policy (TP) started out at £330 for the year and last renewal was about £450 and I've had three claims in that time, last one 6 years ago. Never had any hassle at all with claims or the company.

Hi Tried www.tradewiseinsurance.com this morning and quoted me £1200, that may sound expensive to some but nearly half what I have been quoted elsewhere and at 22 years old companies willing to insure me are few and far between. Also an 0208 number so no massive charges to get a quote and the woman I spoke to was very helpful in explaining all the cars I'm not allowed to drive, Including oddly a nissan micra 1.3s as it is classed as a "Sports/Performance" prefix lol

I'm interested in this as I too change cars a lot and/or have several at a time! As above, what allows you to get trade insurance?? Buy and sell so many a year or something?

I was 24 before I could get a trade policy, and only then because I turned 25 within the insurance time period (by a whole 6 days lol) I've got exclusions, I started out with no imports, but now I can drive anything unless its a Skyline, Impreza turbo, RX7 or M// BMW. Supposedly covered bikes and US cars but I checked closer and it doesn't, haven't got either on the road so no point complaining. I got mine initially telling them that I wanted it because I had loads of cars. They were OK with that. there's the same stuff as others, an age limit for FC cover and an indemnity limit of 25 or 30k but I can drive anything I like anyway if I don't crash it!

I toyed with the idea of getting a traders policy last renewal time. I get through 6 or 7 cars a year, but only have room for 3 cars at a time. Most single classic car limited miles policies from Footman James come up at under £200 for me (no no claims needed), so I plumped for 3 individual car policies.
Even with the admin fees for change of vehicle factored in, a £1000 policy full of clauses and exclusions didn't really make much sense for me.

When you apply for a trade policy do you tell them you're a trader or just a collector or x2. Also, what happens when you need to tax the car?

I was with Tradex last year on a policy as a part time mechanic working from home. Covered me on personal cars up to £10k (no limit of how many cars, just the total value) Plus customer cars up to £20k whilst i was driving and also whilst parked at my home address whilst in my care/ being worked on Cost me £500 i was 38 and had 3 points for speedng but never had a claim in 16years of driving This year i'm with Unicom and am working full time for myself from premisis. Cover is up to £15k for personal vehicles and £30k for customers. I've room for up to 6 cars in my unit and all my tools are also covered Its up a bit to £800 but does cover a lot more so still acceptable really. I've also customised the cover as i mostly work on old cars, modified cars and rally cars which are often excluded as standard. Only exceptions i have are no USA cars, vans over 3.5t or motor bikes. Apart from that it'll cover anything i fancy ;D A word of caution about using a trade policy just to cover personal cars when not working in the trade. Some police men are more on the ball than others, a mate used to have a traders policy and once when stopped by the police (as the car showed up as un-insured) they asked how many cars he'd sold that year and did he have a record of them! Apparently to be classed as a car dealer you must go through a minimum amount of cars and keep records for the tax man (think it was 12 a year min) Might be better to go for a policy where you say your a part time valeter, mechanic, etc etc Still gives you cover on your own cars full time but might save you hassle with the police if ever stopped

Also, what happens when you need to tax the car? Just taxed one today, if the V5 is in your name or your details are in the traders section then your covered and can tax it

^That's a good point and something to think about. My policy is based on me working in restoration so no sales. It also covers me for social, domestic and pleasure use in any vehicle registered to me.

mine stipulates i must add 10 cars to the policy a year- it doesnt say whether i have to have them in my name though, just have them in my possession for more than the 2wk period so they get added to the policy. i easily get through that in a year without trying. me and the 'tother half actually own 7 between us so in reality i only need to add 3. and to be classed as a trader by DVLA you have to go through 15 a year(i only know this as they tried to prosecute my mate for being a 'roadside trader'), so theres a nice window there where you can keep both sides happy

Yeah tis a good point. I'm on as a part time dismantler (not ELV) so no requirement for public liability or sales. Suits me as I'll break a couple dozen donor cars a year easy, plus the ones I break after I run them into the ground. Kind of like bangernomics except even better

We've had a trade policy for a few years, we run a tuning and modifications shop in Kent, so need to have it. One thing to check is that on most policies customers cars are covered to full market value, but your own are only covered to trade value, which is always going to be sod all.
