I guess I better lash a thread together on my MX5. It's a '91 Eunos V-Spec, in BRG with the tan interior, as featured recently on Teenage Dirtbag Picked it up from a fellow Octaner who had it for about a year before moving onto an Alfa 75. He had been over it with a toothcomb, sorting the brakes, clutch and wheels, and lots of other little jobs. I've been all over Ireland in it, from the Healy Pass to Mondello. Small off… Its been pretty reliable, aside from an alternator that need to be refurbed. I took it outat the weekend for the first time thtis year, now I just have to get it back on the road for more fun. I've never driven a car that generated so many smiles-per-mil

Next jobs planned for it are to : * Clean the rusty curse word out from around the battery tray, * De-foam the driver's side seatback, * Replace the gearstick rubbers * Relocate front plate * Replace foglights for decent driving lights * Replace tyres * Repaint spare 8spokes. * Pass NCT * Remove cat * Sort out some laquer peel on the bonnet.

There's a bit of wear on the drivers' seat bolster, but it's not too bad.

YAY - another Eunos....V-Spec too!
Nice to see you've still got the original brown mats, they tend to go missing in a lot of them. Good work on finding one with a decent interior too...as you said before, the wear on the seats can be a killer, so finding one with a good set of seats is a wise move.
I replaced the gearstick rubbers on mine the other day....what a MASSIVE difference! Change the nylon bearing on the bottom of the selector too. It's only a couple of ££ and makes the change a lot nicer. The rubbers make moise intrusion a lot less. I couldn't believe the difference. I didn't get around to changing the oil in my selector unit, it didn't even need topping up, but I will do when I get around to doing the gearbox and diff oils in a month or so.
The other thing with mine - it was quite rattly....especially on start-up. I'd only driven it a few miles since buying it and getting it back to the unit. Every time I went to start it to move it around the unit (most days) it made such a racket I was getting worried!
An engine flush and new oil/filter later, it sounds soooo sweet now. Night & day! Not even a hint or rattle at all even on cold start-up after its been standing for a day or two. Looks like the previous owner looked after it cosmetically, but wasn't too hot on the mechanical side of things. I'm guessing you're on top of all that and not having to suffer the noise yourself? It's so nice not hearing it any more. Happy hydraulic lifters = happy Bruce. ;D

Cheers lads, @mm they all sound a bit tappety, though tI've never had to tinker with the HLAs on mine. The chap who had it before me has done most of the mechanical stuff, I'm just changing the oil & filters every 6k and so far so good! NCT/MOT is due soon, so we'll see what's needed after that.

First of the Month, so Mrs V has taken the paperwork down to the Garda station to get The Stamp (we don't have a SORN facility here, so if a car is off the road, then you need to go to the copshop to get the declaration signed to confirm that the car 's been off the road.) then it's off to the Tax Office. NCT/MOT is booked in for the 10th, which also gives me an excuse for a Sunday morning drive, then after that we're booked in with the MX5ireland folk for the Irish Festival of Speed at the end of the month in Adare.

Tyres on the 15's are down to the wear marker, so they defintely won't pass the NCT. but there's a lot of thread on the old OEM 14's in the spare room. I'm half tempted to swap the daisies back on, but I'd rather be driving on the slightly wider 15s…

Fitted 4 new tyres (Bridgestone Turanza) to the 5 on Friday : Passed the NCT yesterday morning, with flying colours! 5 minutes later, the steering goes heavy, and the "Charge" and "Heat" lights come on. That's the PAS/Aircon and Alternator/Waterpump belts. Replacements ordered, thinking of ditching the AC altogether. Apart from the shorter, non A/C belt, is there anything else I need to order/make? Blanking plates, bypass pipes, that sort of thing?

Looks like I need a shorter bolt once I've removed the compressor: I'm also wondering how I'm going to replace the bit behind the glovebox with no fibreglass or fibreglassing skills…

You can run the normal power steering belt (non-AC) and just not have the compressor connected. No need to blank anything, just run as normal without the belt running around the compressor.
If you remove the compressor, you need to remove all the gas (legally, you need a company to drain the system down if there is gas is the system) but if there is no gas, just disconnect the pipework and remove the compressor.
Your photos aren't showing for me, but I think you can just remove the compressor because the adjustment/tension of the belt is done on the power steering pump. (been a while, so a little bit foggy on this!)
As for pipework & the rest, just remove everything in the engine bay including the condensor & drier from under the slam panel. From inside the cabin you can remove the wiring from the AC unit and then remove the whole thing by removing two or three mounting bolts and undoing the two metal clamps each side - replacing the whole AC unit with a link pipe from a non AC car. Very straightforward. The only thing you then need to do is stick a blank over the two holes in the bulkhead where the AC pipes go through from the engine bay into the cab.
The whole system can be removed in around 1 to 2 hours if things come undone easily. I've never had a problem undoing the unions on all the cars I've removed AC systems from.
If you get stuck with anything, give me a shout.

Nice one. It'll be next month or later till the budget allows, but you've given me a few good leads there, thanks!

Just a thought....Seth had/has one in his MX5 breaker. Might be worth PM'ing him to see if he'll let you buy it for cheap

Belts done. Then done again as it was squealing like a piggy the following day. We noticed the front water temp sensor is broken, so I've a new one ordered. Taped the broken one to the housing so that the fan comes on with the ignition for the moment. At the weekend we took a trip to the inaugural Irish Festival of Speed in Adare with the octane.ie folks, a smashing day out!
