Ok....another 2 weeks has passed and the saga rumbles on. To re-cap: I'd found out I need new brake parts rather than a bearing. I couldn't find a brake fitting kit anywhere until forum member, Coggers, stepped in and saved the day by locating the fitting kit and some shoes. They arrived on Thursday and the courier left them with a neighbour. Its now late on Sunday and I still don't have them despite chapping their door on 4 occassions and leaving a note asking them just to leave the box at my door I'd been considering just re-assembling everything and motoring with no handbrake parts but at same time wanted to remove the hub so I could get it on the bench and find out how tight a fit it will be to get the companion flange back on the half shaft. I also want to try and tidy up the threads on the half shaft which have been damaged at some time in the past. To remove the hub from the car I needed a 10mm spline key and ordered one off Ebay. It took over 2 weeks to arrive so I basically was held up till yesterday. The hub did not lift off as soon as the bolts were removed. It is quite a tight fit in the trailing arm with practically nowhere to get any purchase on it to tap it off but it came off eventually 10mm spline key needed to remove 4 bolts holding hub to trailing arm. took over 2 weeks to arrive and was in such a big box it couldn't be posted thru the door causing more delaythere is only a tiny lip to get any purchase on the hub housing outboard of trailing arm hub removed with judicious tapping on inside face exposing trailing-arm crying out for painthub off car. if bearing needed replaced this is the stage at which you might want to take it to an engineering firm to remove the half shaft, press out the old bearing and press in a new one. I have a receipt showing this operation cost £65 when the N/S bearing was done a while agoI have taken hub off to address this smeared thread and see if companion flange will go back on without too much struggleSTOP PRESS neighbour just arrived with brake shoes etc

Well....I'm mobile again Got to work on Tuesday and 10 hours later was driving home. That was a long shift to essentially fit some brake shoes but it wasn't quite that straightforward. First thing to do was tidy up the thread on the half axle with a thread file. I'm always amazed how well these things work. I then pushed the companion flange on to see how far it would go and the found a suitable socket to tap it down the axle when it dawned on me that the nut which hold it on could surely be used to push it on. I hadn't put it on very far but it took a while messing about with the puller and sockets to get it back off. Next job was to bolt the hub carrier back onto the trailing arm which was easy enough then tap the companion flange on far enough to expose the threaded part of the half axle then tighten the nut which pushed it on. Was quite easy but I'm sure I've proabably shortened the service life of the bearing with the tapping action as I could feel some lateral play in it although it spins nicely with no noises so should be ok for a while, fingers crossed. Next job was to get the shoes on and this is where I thought it was all going to go pear-shaped. The fitting kit only really consists of the springs and pins and the thought struck me that if the shoe adjusters were missing or damaged, or the actuating arms, where on earth would you find new ones. I decided to take the passenger side disc off to check how everything went together and found there was a vital barrel shaped pin which linked the actuating arms and I didn't have one for the drivers side I was about to start trying to make one out of a bolt or similar when I thought there might be a very slim chance the drivers side one fell out when I took everything apart, about 3 weeks ago. The area outside my garage is sort of stone chippings and mud and easy to lose things in but I got a brush and magnet and started sweeping them around under the rear wheel and 20 seconds later the missing bit jumped onto the magnet I was so surprised I thought it must be the other one that I'd had earlier but no....I definitely had 2 ;D Next problem was that the discs just would not go back over the shoes despite the adjusters being on the lowest setting. I thought maybe they were supplied too thick and was considering re-fitting the old ones but instead resorted to using the wheel nuts to tighten the discs back down over the shoes! Once they were on the wheels moved freely enough. Well, the passenger side did but the driver's side was tighter than I 'd like it to be. I have not used the handbrake since for fear of locking things up. Next job is to adjust the handbrake thread tidied up with good old thread file trial fit of companion flange. goes on this far by pushing. hammering or some sort of puller needed to push home fullyhandbrake shoe actuating arm assy. parts are connected by small stepped pin. do not loseNow that I'm mobile again I am back on the never ending fillng and sanding of the wing. Also dug out the wing support bracket which was in some rust stripping fluid. Its now been primed and painted. wing support bracket has been chemically stripped of rust prior to paintingquite heavily ptted on this side

That alternator looks like a Bosch unit .
See if there's still a Bosch sticker on the side of it , if so let me know the part number on it - should be a ten digit number beginning with a zero..

Thanks Coggers. I took several pics of it in situ and gave it a wipe to find part no.s or similar but nothing until I looked at the pic I took from under the car. There is some sort of label there so I'll need to have a closer look at that. label visible from under car could provide vital ID

Well spotted Coggers. It is a Bosch unit and the sticker was good as new under the grease but my picture maybe doesn't capture the number very well. I can see it says 14V 75A 20 on the bottom line and last 3 digits on top are 511

I'm now accepting that pictures of brake springs, condensers and alternators don't really do it for RRReaders.........as we are all bodywork junkies at heart I accidentally finished the wing yesterday which may be a bit more interesting. The weather was good, so there was no excuse not to paint, so I flatted back the earlier coats with a bit 1200, wiped it down with panel wipe, put a few wet coats on, pop rivetted the indicator trim back on and put the front bumper back on (after taking it apart to get in at the little captive nuts that held the remains of the old plastic number plate screws). When it was apart it was clear it has been shunted at some time but nothing major. Would be nice to send it away to chrome platers who would roll out the dents too, I believe. Probably cost £300-£400 tho. all back together again. looks ok front bumper broken down into component parts. re-chrome would be nicesmall dent visible next to rubber bumper of rear unitThe current situation, to sum up, is: - front interior trim removed and now dry, ready to re-fit to car but leak not located yet. Despite heavy rain car is dry. Weird
- new 'unobtanium' front downpipe and resonator located from chap in England for very reasonable price who just happens to have a friend who lives 2.3 miles away from me who can drop it off!!
- alternator search commencing
- grease came of upholstery no probs with a clean cloth and some panel wipe
- silver stripes to be applied to front end of wing
Just noticed I haven't refitted the lower 'eyelash' trims below the headlights

Foxy99, your Royale is really looking good! Whilst I was on holiday in Wales last week, I kept thinking "I should be driving my bloody Royale around these roads." So, after having it layed up on the drive for nearly 12 months, I finally got it insured from the 1st of sept, the problem now is .... I can't find the V5, so I can't tax it by the 1st. i will have to send off for a new copy and line the greedy DVLA's pockets some more Anyhow, I can't wait to get back on the road with it soon and I have finally got my stepdaughter to agree to be seen out in it (it was old and not cool to be seen in), after a few weeks of education and telling her that she should count herself lucky to be able to ride in one at all. it seems to have worked ... well, that and the fact that I said I will let her drive it on a deserted carpark. It's due for an MOT in Oct', and I so hope it passes.

Good thread - well done saving the wing too - were Royales only ever 4 door or did they badge some Monzas as Royales too? As an aside, upon studying the first pic at Cholmondley on P1, I realise that i'm in it! That's me in the black t-shirt taking a pic (with my son to my left)!

I've always thought the Royale Coupe looked better than the Opel Monza (due to the Royales chunky bumper).

This model looked great whether Senator or Royale and with either two doors or four! They're lovely looking cars. Not as nice as Foxy's other steer though; his '74 DD6 VDP is one of the prettiest saloons ever made, maybe the prettiest. He has good taste! David

Monza alternators have a habit of not charging unless you hit 3000 rpm (briefly) then they start charging............ for the duration of the journey......

Wow no responses for a while, now loads ;D Mr B'std: Funny you should say that about the rpm as I took the car for a long motorway drive a few weeks back and the battery needle sat back up in the high green/black where it should be. Maybe I should drive further Shran: I agree about the chunky bumpers and it is interesting to see the white Monza with the chrome bumpers as until now I have only seen European Senator As that have the same bumpers as the Royale. Their nearest equivalent to the UK only Royale appears the be the Senator 2.8S (google it and you'll find some black & white images). Also my neice, who is 12, loves my Royale. We all went for a family meal recently and her first request was to go in the Royale dbdb: now that the wing is finished on the Royale I am back working on the DD6 VDP. I can actually see the end in sight!! Have only the passenger side rear wheelarch to do and fit the rear valance then its time to refit the fuel tanks, interior, exhaust etc, etc. I set myself a target to finish it for February 2012 as its my Grandad's 90th birthday then and he thinks going out in the Royale is like being in a limo....so I reckon he'll like the Daimler Last word is: There were some very late Royales which had a slightly different interior, Series 1.5 Monza/Senator dash and no metal VAUXHALL plinth on the rear. I never thought I'd see one but there was one on Ebay last week for Buy It Now £1250 with only 55K on clock and better condition than mine. No-one bought it and I can't give it a home... www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330604905417?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Something like that anyway . Let me know the number and I'll give you a 'proper' part number for it in return...

I wanted to get some pictures to post, but could only manage these ones in the dark (due to waiting around for a certain person to get ready) but they look kind of atmospheric. I'll get some day-time shots of the interior to post over the next few days.
