My mate runs US style plates on his 2005 Mustang, he's got a magic bit of paper which is a print out of a clause in the MOT or something which he waves in front of the plod when he's pulled and it gets him off every time. something to do with the space available for the plates are too small for a regular UK spec one so he can run US style ones. I'll check with him and get back to you later on the subject if it is true/still viable. Wont really help, the clause is that a smaller plate is allowed, with smaller digits, but they still have to be Charles Wright font and in the correct colour. I ran the 'correct' import plates on the Daihatsu, Laurel, and currently on the rear of the LS. Not 'exactly' legal, as there is room for a proper UK size plate, but I've never had an issue with them.

I like them, but those are the NEW Illinois plates that I don't like (They came out in '01). When that car was new it would have had the 84-01 plates: That design might also get you less grief from the rozzers. Know anyone who makes that design?

If its just because the car came from X place then its a bit stupid .. IMHO. I don't run german plates cos my car was built in germany... My girlfriend doesnt run french ones because hers was built in france..... But did they spend the first 15 years of their "lives" there? The Cadillac lived in Illinois for some time judging by the stickers and such on the car. I'm ambivalent on foreign style plates TBH. Its an easy way to fit the hole and they look kinda neat.

I had a discussion with my car about the number plates. It has spent 15 years in the UK, 20 years in New Zealand and about 15 years in the US. The car and I reached a compromise, so no plate on the front but a vintage on the rear. Its often best if you talk to your car and get a view of their feelings on the matter

my dad ran a honda jazz for about 5 years with belgium/flemish plates and had no problems.
the reason they wouldnt pull him was because they didnt like dealing with foreigners!

I ran pressed metal plates on the BMW for AGES and got told they weren't legal by the police twice, who then proceeded to do nothing about it, 1 was talking to me about my speed, and the other that I had a main beam light not working. Just ordered a US sized plate for the front of the rx7 to go with the plate holder I have as my present plate is in 3 pieces and MOT is probably next week But I've been running plateless for ages now anyway, so can't be much worse. I reckon you'll be fine - run it, enjoy, and if you get pulled just be nice.

Agreed it's not as colourful as a 'proper' US plate but here's a pic of what he runs granted the rear plate is yellow but in the same font/size as the front... Seems it's a bit of a grey area mostly because motoring law is a massive and enormous sea of incomprehensible legislation that some plod either don't know or don't understand, me included. this is the clause he carries with him: www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2002/2687/body/made.

front one youd be ok as its not a uk spec hole/car and its mostly white........
rear they might get moany cos it wont be yellow but youd get away font wise
as rld put in his pic have seen us cars on uk reg with that style on the mustang and they seem ok (have asked at shows and they said 99% of the time no prob)

I have a number place question, can you remove the centre space from a standard UK plate?
I.e, changing
A123 ABC
to
A123ABC
And keep all the letters the same height and width, same colour etc? I want narrowed plates so the thought is to take the centre space out, then chop the ends off.
