1998 S reg, 70k miles, 'Tropicana' (turquoise!), Power Steering, CD Player, Taxed & Tested til May 2013, This was my friend's car for the last 8 years (and her nan's before that, who bought it brand new from Bentleys Toyota in Warrington - still have the order form). I heard she was getting rid, so bought it off her as my partner's daily was acting up. I've since managed to sort that, so it's now surplus to requirements. It's been serviced every year (bills to prove) and had a new rad about 18 months back, and new disks & pads around the same time. All tyres have at least 4-5mm tread. There are a couple of small scatches and dings, but overall it's a really straight car for it's age and you would struggle to do better. It's poverty spec, so you get power steering and...that's it ;D so less to go wrong! It's never had an advisory notice on any of it's MOTs, never been welded, nor is it likely to need it any time soon. I'll add more pics when I've cleaned it properly. Price is £725

Two months later and I finally have 12 months ticket!!
That's mainly due to the scarcity of parts though. The clutch master cylinder turned out to be discontinued everywhere including Toyota, but they still do a rebuild kit, which is the route I ended up taking, which took longer.
The recon caliper took a long time to track down - found it on ebay in the end, which was just lucky. Then the handbrake cable, quite a few places listed it, but whenever I ordered it, I would get a phonecall a few days later saying it had been discontinued. Toyota came through in the end, although it did mean a 3 week wait and it coming from Japan (and an extortionate price!) but oh well, it's legal again now!!
No advisories now either :-)
The wheels have been swapped front to back and appropriate spiggot rings fitted, although the 57.1mm set are still causing some vibration.
Definitely needs some lows now.

These always confuse me as to where they sat in the range. Were they a 5dr civic by a different name? Or a 5dr alternative to the Aerodeck?

As I said last time, I've been on the lookout for some wheels, mainly on ebay. I saw some I liked the look of last week, so put in a bid. They were 15x7" deep dish ATSs, in the correct bolt pattern with 4 yokohama A539s, only slight issue being they were ET28, where the corolla is ET38, but I figured I'd get away with that. Here's the pic from the ebay ad: There were only 2 centre caps as well which is annoying, as I doubt I'll find them anywhere, so I'll just have to run with them off. So, I made the rather lengthy trip to High Wycombe on Tuesday to collect them.When I got there, it turned out one of the tyres was punctured, so he knocked £20 off the price. He hadn't listed the centre bore, so had a quick check and they were 57.1mm (vw fitment). With that, I threw them in the boot, handed over the money and drove back. I didn't have chance to do anything with them until yesterday. I took the punctured tyre to a local alloy wheel supplier and got the puncture repaired, bought the correct nuts and hoped to buy some spigot rings, but he didn't have any small enough (the Toyota is 54.1mm). Bit annoying, but never mind. I managed to find a metal set on ebay when I got home, but they weren't cheap - £25.99! Still they arrived this morning, which meant I could finally fit them! So here they are: Centre caps on: However, as per usual, all was not as it seemed. It became abundantly clear why there were only 2 centre caps when I fitted the wheels - they are not a complete set I have 2 that are ET28 with a 57.1mm centre bore and 2 that are ET30 with a 61mm centre bore. So I now need 2 more spigot rings. Great. This means there is a slight stance difference between front and rear (although if I didn't point it out, you'd probably be pushed to tell). I fitted the ET28 wheels to the front (not on purpose) and these sit right out about as far as they possibly could in the arch (just covered by the arch extension). The rears are slightly further in So when the other spigot rings come I'll swap them so the ET28s are on the back. Really annoying - I'd never dream of not disclosing something like this, and when you see it stamped on one wheel on collection, you assume they'll all be the same! I've already left positive feedback as well. Grrr. Anyway, I do like them, now they're on. The tyres are 195/45/15 and would have been better being 195/50/15, so when they need changing I'll go up a profile. It also now needs dropping 30-40mm, so that'll be on the cards soon. Oh and red calipers to match the rest of the decals ;D You may notice that the rear arch looks scruffy. This is because I've removed the arch trim which had warped (they have a strip of metal running through them which rots and expands, ruining them) to fit a better replacement. They are held on by a bolt at each end and 2 plastic clips in the middle. Except when I came to remove the old one I found that the right hand bolt had parted company from the trim, leaving me with this which is held on by a plastic covered captive nut on the other side, which is totally mullered Here's how it's meant to be The metal thread has rusted together and the plastic 'nut' is mashed. Tried all kinds, but don't have a grinder so can't get it off. In other news, I still don't have an MOT. It failed on handbrake inop on NSR wheel, which I thought would be the caliper. I managed to source a recon caliper (easier said than done!) and fitted it, to find that although a bit stiff, the old caliper wasn't that bad, it was actually the cable that had seized. This has proven even harder to find than the caliper. I found an AE92 cable, but this is about 10cm too long, so I've ended up having to go to Toyota. The part is still available but showing as 'short supply', which means it might not be, so I should know in the next week or so. Not cheap either at £67. Ouch! So hopefully when that's sorted it'll be roadworthy again. Just had my insurance renwal through as well....£98 ;D Not bad for a 25 year old!

Yes mate, Corolla Twincam (my 3rd!). Looking a bit sad at the moment but I've just won some wheels for it on the bay, so that should perk it up. Although they seem bloody extortionate now compared to £200 for some 18" Kahns!

I've always liked those humps behind the rear seats on these :-) Loving the Kahn RS-Rs as well - they were big money at the time (or if they're a copy, they're pretty decent)

Out of interest what symptoms is a knackered master cylinder going to give? Fluid leaking around the top of the pedal?

I'll try the two man method and see how I get on (ezibleed won't fit my master cyIlinder as it has a rubber cap).
I can't understand why the caliper piston isn't contacting the pads though. Do you have to manually set the piston on some cars, as I thought it would just self adjust on the pedal?

I think I was letting the master cylinder level get too low. It never looked empty but it must have been too low to draw through, so I have now got some pedal pressure, but it's still not right.
Also, the piston doesn't seem to be contacting the pads on the new caliper even after pumping the pedal (with everything closed off obviously). And it's made no difference to the handbrake, which is the only effing reason I bothered!! I hate days like this!

Not having a good day! My car (Corolla Twincam) failed its MOT on poor handbrake on one wheel, so today I've been changing the caliper for a recon one. I bought one of those easybleed kits in advance. Old caliper came off fine, new one went on fine, so I started to try to bleed the brakes. I then found the kit didn't fit my master cylinder, so I had to go to halfords and buy one of the one man bleeding kits. I went to use that, then found that the new caliper has a 7mm bleed nipple, rather than the 8mm of all the others. As I didnt have a 7mm spanner, this required another trip to Halfords! I have since been trying to bleed the brakes having no success at all. I started with the passenger side rear, followed the instructions etc then when I thought it was done (no bubbles), did the nipple back up. I then did the driver's side front and followed the same process. However, I'm finding when I open the bleed nipple I get fluid seeping out as well as entering the tube - is that normal, as to me if fluid's getting out, air can get in? I've probably gone through about 300ml of brake fluid now and when everything;s done up, the pedal just goes to the floor, but I can't see any fluid leaks. Unfortunately, I've disturbed both ends, as after re-connecting the union to the rear caliper, I found a copper washer on the floor. I didn't know where this was meant to sit, so undid the front brake line to check. Is it just a case of keeping going for ages, or am I missing something daft? (never bled brakes before) Just to let you know the process I'm using, I attach the tube, undo bleed nipple, pump the brake pedal about 10 times, check to see if there's air in the pipe, (also keep checking to make sure the master cylinder's full), when there isn't I tighten the nipple and remove the tube. When doing the front brake, I keep getting large pockets of air trapped in the tube and can't work out if it's because the tube's at a daft angle or if it's coming out of the bleed nipple as no matter how much I pump the pedal it always seems to be there. I had to open the nipple a fair way on this to get fluid to come out, and then it's weeping around the nipple as well as into the tube. Any tips/ideas?

Thought it was about time I updated this thread, although in truth there's not very much to update! Anyone who has lived in a house whilst trying to renovate it I'm sure will understand why, but the house is in a much more liveable state now, so hopefully I can start devoting some time to the corolla. One of the first things done was to get some proper number plates for it, but I wanted them in the correct older style font. After some searching I managed to find a place that could produce them and they were also able to recreate the original dealer banner at the bottom, so we went from this: to this: Much better! When I first bought it, it was missing it's gearknob, so had one that was far too large just sat on top of the stick, which was cack to say the least when you were trying to press on! I thought I'd have a laugh and see if Toyota still did them..."Yes we do sir.....and they're just £138!". After a few months I managed to find an AE92 GTi in a scrappy, which used the same one, which was bought for £5! Here's a needless pic: In other news, the engine bay got a bit of a clean a few months back (not that you can tell here!) I automatically assumed that the anti-roll bar bushes would need doing, so I ordered a new set, including bolts etc from Mr T (£140!!! ). I did the rear which were well shot (no pics unfortunately) but when I came to do the fronts I found they were actually very new looking, which was a turn up, but a bit annoying seeing as I couldn't return the new ones as they were a special order. Oh well, that'll teach me not to check! Whilst I was under there I also did a bit of wire brushing and undersealing and was actually very pleasantly surprised at just how solid it is. It's had a patch at the rear of each sill (done properly, not the usual MOT spec rubbish) and errr, that's it!! Not does it need any more - by far the best one I've owned in this respect. Bringing things up to date, it's MOT runs out on the 12th July, so I decided today was the day. I'd noticed that the rear silencer had developed a small hole right in the middle at the bottom. These cars produce a lot of condensation through the exhaust and it has eaten its way out. It has a proper Toyota rear box on there, which I don't want to replace as they no longer produce them and they sound the best and have the proper tailpipe piece on them, so that got plugged with some exhaust gum (it's in good condition other than this). I checked all the lights which were ok, unblocked and adjusted the clogged washer jets, checked they tyres (all good) and trundled off... AND....it failed ;D . Nothing major though - headlamp beam is off (forgot to check), fluffy dice on the mirror obstrcuted the swept area of the windscreen (FFS!), and handbrake inop on one side. No advisories. So not bad all in all. " So I'm now after a new rear caliper to sort the handbrake. "Just rebuild it!" I hear no one cry...It's the hanbrake mech at the back that seizes on them and no rebuild kit ever seems to contain this. I had this problem on both my others and managed to buy remanufactured jobbies from brakes international, so I logged on to their site credit card in hand as soon as I got home....only to find them able to supply the offisde rear, but not the nearside rear which is the one I need. ! There is a guy selling some on ebay but only as a pair, so I have emailed asking him if he'll split so, will just have to see on that one. Last time I tried Toyota, they wanted about £250 - don't think so! In addition to this, on the way home from the MOT station the clutch master cylinder decided it really had had enough of operating correctly, meaning I had no clutch! Luckily I was on the slip road on to the motorway when it happened, so I could just stay in 5th and I only live about 2 miles off the motorway, so was able to rev match the rest of the way (just). Then had to nudge it in the garage on the starter. I've managed to find a new one for £80 so that'll be going on next week. So that makes 3 AE82s owned and at least one rear caliper and clutch master cylinder replaced on all of them! After that's done I really need to get the wheel situation sorted as they really are rancid. I want something with a bit of dish. Suggestions welcomed!

Looks intriguing, what's the story with it - has it been yours all that time? I am tempted, you don't see many chrome bumper 325s now. What's the score with the rear arches, had it had a bump, as it looks like the whole panel's been painted ?
Would you be up for swaps on this?
