Thanks for the pointers lads, much appreciated! One final question for you while we're here, do we have to clear the campsite by the Sunday eve or is it available till Monday morning? Don't really fancy driving to Glasgow as soon as the show's over๐
Thanks again!

Hi guys Finally going to be attending the Gathering in person after nearly 15 years on this forum and have some questions about the track time.
I've never driven at a track day before, would this be a problem? What sort of helmet/safety equipment would be required and are passengers allowed?
Thanks in advance gents

Been through the whole thread over a couple of days and am amazed at your skills and vision! Looking forward to see this finished! One small question, the bed riser frame looks to be completely empty in the middle,No cross braces or anything. Is there a reason for this? As I would have thought the ply won't be up to taking much weight in the middle of the bed without some sort of cross members.

Cool space you've got there! Good job on the bench as well! I'll be interested to see how you get on with it, as I've recently been debating tearing my steel one up and remaking the structure in wood but keeping the steel worktop. I managed to acquire a couple of long beams fron work which are around 4x6 or therabouts. The reason for this is as soon as I start hammering on my current steel bench (4mm plate worktop on 2x1 box section I pigeoned together when I was about 15 years old) everything on it starts marching towards the edge, which is very annoying. Therefore I was thinking the wood might dampen the blows somewhat.

Yo dude, currently off work sick and I found this post while searching for something else.Sat down and read all 17 pages and all I can say is,You sir are a freakin LEGEND! Love your 'I can't afford that so I'll make it myself' attitude and your ridiculous work rate!! Feeling pretty ashamed of myself now,I've got a garage with right under the house and I don't pay a penny for it[still live with my parents] and I haven't done a decent days work on my projects in ages! I'll be sure to give this a look from time to time to keep the mojo up!
Keep up the great work mate!
By the way, most of the pics on pages 14,15 and 16 didn't work for me,though that just might be me crappy laptop.

Cheers for the replys lads! Grumpy I'm positive it can be fitted because I've got mates who have fitted them, I'm just not sure if the cross members are the same as I'm trying to fit mine on the original mounts without using lowering blocks between the mounts and the cross member.I want to avoid having the box hanging really low down as the car will be pretty low so I'd rather modify the tunnel. Bortaf You outlined all the reasons I'm looking to fit it properly! Yes I know about the Rocket name, just mentioned it to help people understand which box I'm talkin about.
Barty I've got a Type E with a Quaife straight cut gearset to go in ;)And this will be a toy so not really bothered about fuel economy.
So the upshot is I'm going to try modding the standard tunnel myself the allow the box to go in on the original mounts, not 2 inches below. This will involve cutting the top of the tunnel and lifting it upwards,so to speak.I'll also be widening it a bit to make it easier to remove the box without removing the engine.
Thanks again for you help lads! I'll let you know how it goes

Hi lads I was wondering if anyone can give me some pointers as to what's needed to fit a Type E(Rocket) box in a Mk1 Escort with a tiny, standard gearbox tunnel. First of all do I use the standard gearbox crossmember or is the 1300 box one different to the Type E crossmember? I've had the box on a trolley jack and offered it up but the gearlever housing(removed the lever) hits the box section(just behind the original gearlever hole.) in the tunnel long before the mounting bolts even come close. I know the bellhousing will require some mods to fit as well Is it worth buying a big gearbox tunnel from the likes of GRP4 Fabrications or Peter LLoyd Rallying? I'm trying to move away from my previous life as an innate bodger so I'd like as neat a solution as possible. Googled it a lot but can't seem to find anything concrete to go on! Thanks in advance for your help Tom

Absolutely epic mate!! Gorgeous car, love the colour and the rims really suit it!
Any chance of some engine spec? Got a Mk1 Escy I fancy making a bit faster and 400bhp with no head mods sounds the nuts!

Any one got any thoughts on those fibreglass Mex wings please? Managed to find a really cheap quote for postage but still worried about fitting them!
Cheers

Howdy everybody. Just thought I'd start a build thread for my Mk1 Escort project, now that I've actually started doing something to it! It's been hit pretty bad on the front right corner but hopefully it's all repairable! Up till now I've taken the front end to bits to enable me and a good mate of mine(who's a panel beater) to use a hydraulic ram(Portapower I think they're called)in the engine bay to straighten the chassis. However after an initial bout of manic work on the car progress has stalled due to 2 things-I'm skint and I can't find a decent drivers side wing! I am currently toying with the idea of buying a pair of Mexico fibreglass wings from Smith and Deakin in the UK but postage is pretty costly and I've read they're a right curse word to get to fit properly,so I'm not sure if I can justify the cash. They would look great on it though, and save me trouble with rubbing issues when I lower it. What do you guys think? Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? Have some pics! Since this pic has been taken I've ripped the mangled wing off and found a couple of rust spots that need taking care of,but nothing major! Empty engine bay! The 1.3 Crossflow will be going back in when it's finished but only to get it on the road! There's a Pinto waiting in the wings:D It really sucks not being able to do anything with it but hopefully I can get cracking soon and I can't wait to get behind the wheel of this thing!! And finally a bonus pic of my Mini to keep her happy! She's currently abandoned but that's only because I'm yet to get this off to the machinists for some work! It's all my own handiwork and seeing as it's the first ever head I've done I'm pretty proud of it.All done in accordance with the teachings of the Great Vizard and his yellow bible!Hopefully it'll deliver the goods! Then I can put the engine together and back in place and get her going again! That's all for now folks!
