I have a blacktop zetec conversion in my morris minor nearing completion. The engine was first fired up about a month ago and has been started and run up to temperature to test all the systems were operating as they should a few times now. Probably about 30-40 minutes of running time total.
On Saturday I started the car to check the exhaust system for leaks and the charging light did not go out as it had on previous start ups. The voltage gauge in the dash didn't show any charge. On checking with my multimeter there was no output from the alternator. The Alternator was new when the project was started so has been on the engine unused for a couple of years. I had another new alternator the same in stock for my next project so fitted that but the problem is still the same with this one fitted.
So I am now thinking it has to be something in the wiring that is the problem but the alternator charged fine for all the previous start ups. I have used this type alternator for 5 previous zetec conversions without any issues and the wiring loom is new. The waring light is the original minor one in the speedo and is wired to an ignition switched live and directly to the D+ terminal on the altenator, this terminal is supposed to change from an earth to a live and extinguish the light as the altenator starts to charge. This is not happening. The battery is wired to the B+ terminal, there is also a W terminal which is unused (this is for a rev counter on some OE applications apparently).
Could the resistance in the warning light circuit be too low and not exciting the regulator? I can't see a wattage figure on the bulb but it is a proper bulb and not LED. What I can't get my head around is the fact it appeared to be working fine for the last month and suddenly without anything being changed it has stopped. Both alternators can't be faulty surely?
So any ideas? I am going to try a different warning light with a higher wattage bulb to see if helps but I am open to any suggestions.

Lebowski, thanks for the link to your thread. It is exactly what I was looking for and has made me feel much more confident about doing this. The cutting and welding didn't concern me but the thought of having to strip out gearbox internals is voodoo to me!
dodgerover, Thanks for the suggestion but the transit gearbox has the shifter too far forward and it is located on the side of the box making it wider and would actually need more cutting to get it in.
Jonsey, good tip about the distortion. I will do thats.

As the title says I am looking at moving the gearstick position forward on a type 9 gearbox to avoid having to cut the transmission tunnel on my next project. I am still at the parts gathering stage but was wondering what is involved in doing this. I have been looking on the ford forums and while several threads touch on the subject none really tell you what to do. The threads are all old so have missing pictures and dead links now. I realise that I obviously need to cut and reweld the alloy casing but the selector rod has to be cut by the same amount. What I am wanting to know is how you get that selector rod out of the gearbox before I start cutting. Do I have to strip the gearbox down to get it out or is there a simpler way? Anybody on here done this before?

The Pie Wagon is a different van. Just booglin still looks like the second picture and is a live and well. I think it is living somewhere in Fife if I'm not mistaken.

I've got this little Aldi/Lidl compressor that surplus to requirements. It's in working order, if it's any use to you. The only issue is that I'm in Scotland and your in Bath so would have to be posted and it's quite heavy. I could possibly get it to the Hot Rod Drags at Santa Pod next month if that would help but I can't promise that just yet.

I went to the NSRA Supernats on my own Last weekend. All the usual crew were either busy with work or had family commitments or were skint. It was their 50th Anniversary and I really wanted to go so I decided to just pack up the car and go on my own. It was one of the best weekends I've had in over 30 years of going to car shows. I bumped into people I hadn't spoken to for years, rekindled some old friendships and met new people who they were friends with. By camping for the weekend you also find yourself effortlessly chating to the other campers around you and of course interesting cars are always a conversation starter. Had I gone with my usual group of mates probably none of this would have happened as we would probably have just stayed within our own little group.

White connector is a neutral switch, black one is reverse. RX8 takes a speed reading from the ABS sensor I think. Yes you are right, this afternoon I pulled what I thought were the reverse switch and speed sensor out of the box and they are both switches. There is no speed sensor or speedo drive capability on these gearboxes. A little google searching leads you to several other forums that confirm the the RX8 uses a signal from the ABS to run the speedo. So I will have to look at other options for a speedo.

No speedo drive on the box that I have, only two sensors with two wires coming from them. I am assuming that one of these will be a reverse light switch and the other a speed sensor maybe?

I have bought a Mazda RX8 six speed gearbox to fit to a zetec engine for a project but wondered if it is possible to keep my original cable driven smiths speedo. There must be loads of older cars running engine conversions mated to this box. Any one know what they do to drive the speedo?

I'm a plumber, push fit fittings and chromed copper don't work together. The chromed surface on the copper pipe is too hard for the little metal teeth on the push fit fitting to bite into so once under pressure the fitting will come off. Compression fittings only for chromed copper pipe. I have never plumbed in air lines but for water and heating plastic push fit is great but it is the same as always, buy the best quality pipe and fittings you can afford. Cheap push fit water fittings have caused me too much grief over the years. I use JG speedfit and have never had any problems with them, they cost a bit more money but they are worth it. I don't know if the do a compressed air range but if the do I would imagine they would be decent.

I have a vague childhood memory of these cars being featured on Blue Peter after they had completed the expedition. I seem to remember the presenter being really excited to learn that the drivers cooked baked potatoes on the exhaust manifolds as they drove.

Yes thats how I read it too when looking for info online and I have a copy of Kapri's Idiots guide to BIVA and it reads the same way. It just seemed a bit too simple to me. I know about the chassis having to be new, which it will be. I just wonder if a self built chassis using brand new steel with a receipt for that steel from a reputable steel supplier will be acceptable?

I have just taken the plunge and ordered myself a fibreglass Model A Ford body as I have always wanted to build a proper Hot Rod. I will be going down the BIVA route as I want it to be all properly registered but I would really like to avoid a Q reg if I can. This is a dream car for me and something I've wanted since I was a kid and I am now in my late forties so its time to get it done. I also have my late dad's personal number plate which he had for most of his driving life and all of my life that I can remember so would like to be able to put this on my model A when it's done.
I will be going down the route of a single vehicle donor as much as I can. I have a complete but very rusty MX5 which I have the V5C in my name. How much of the donor car do I have to use, to be able to get the age related registration?
