Hi All, Has anyone got access to a lathe and able to make three dies to press in bearings for me? I’m not expecting it for free, but the engineering places near me aren’t interested or don’t have a lathe… I’m rebuilding an engine and need to replace the intermediate shaft bearings. Essentially I need to do this: and to do that I need a set of dies that fit my bearings. There are three of them and they are slightly different sizes. I have the new bearings, I could post them to you to make things easier. They’re not big things- about 35mm internal diameter. I contacted the guy that made the tools in the photo I’ve attached, but he wasn’t keen on lending them out even with a deposit. Suggestions welcomed 👍 Cheers

Hiya,
As above, I wrote the guide mylittletony linked to - i turboswapped my 1988 back in 2015, before there was much in the way of online guides or help- I wrote the guide to help people avoid a lot of the frustrations I had.
Happy to talk you through it- as you’ve seen you’ll need a wiring loom which might be the most complicated part. The cost of having the car converted by a garage would probably be too much to make it a viable project, since £50ph would add up really quickly.
If you can borrow another car and take the 240 off the road for two weeks, then it’s not a difficult engine swap to do if you’re keen?
Happy to answer any questions you have. I’ve got a project thread here on retrorides that has a fair amount of detail.
Cheers

I built/adapted about half an exhaust - what made it much easier was asking the seller (on eBay: every exhaust part limited) very nicely to stretch one end of each section I bought from them. The result was each section slipped over the next meaning cuts didn’t have to be mm perfect and welding was a series of lap joints not butt welds which are easier. Cheers

Ok, I’ll bring it- if only to find out how it’s described by the auctioneer…

Hi all, One new Auto Delta ADP1034 mechanical fuel pump. This came in a box of spares for a car I used to own, but it wasn’t the same as the one on the car- I don’t know what it will fit, but surely of use to someone? Free if you collect from London N1 or I can bring it to the Gathering, otherwise £5 to cover the cost of postage. Cheers

Hi all, Two retro headunits, I can bring these to Retro Rides Gathering or I could post. Kenwood KFD-3090r cd player with everything present- mounting cage, facia trim, removable face carry case and wiring harness. In good condition- see photos. Based on what these seem to go for on eBay I’m going to say £50 as a starting point, but I’m very much open to offers. Blaupunkt Santa Cruz CD31 - with facia carrying case but no cage. Again in good condition- see photos. Starting at £25 but again, open to offers. I can plug these into my car to prove they work at the Gathering, or when I have a spare minute I’ll plug them in and take a photo/video. Any questions just let me know. Cheers

Hi all, I’ve got a retractable load cover for a Volvo 940 which I’m trying to get to a guy in North Wales. It’s just a bit too long to post easily, as it’s just over the 1500mm limit for a lot of couriers. Otherwise it doesn’t weigh much and it’s not particularly fragile. I’ll be at Retro Rides Gathering at Malloy Park- Can anyone help take it back towards Wales? The guy is in Connahs Quay, but he could collect it from somewhere nearbyish. Photo below. Cheers

A couple of things- first a table made from a flywheel and crankshaft from a Volvo 4-cylinder redblock engine, with the upper part of a lazy Susan repurposed as the top (hence the cutouts around the edge). Then a lamp made from a Volvo 4-cylinder red block camshaft, a volvo Amazon hubcap and a light fitting from a broken table lamp.

Speaking of crappy old beetle engines and seeing as you like an air cooled Porsche, you might like this. I visited an engine builder son of a friend yesterday who had just completed one of these Not the actual one I saw, but 800+bhp from an air cooled lump is pretty impressive, mind, the turbo's are probably big enough to put on an oil tanker. Did the engine end up in this, which I saw at the Goodwood Festival of Speed earlier today?

The volvo clutch master is 19mm bore, would a volvo 240 one with its integrated reservoir fit in the space you have? The clutch master bores and the slaves are the same for a volvo 240/740/940.

I doubt it’s friction causing that much heat, sounds to me like a short circuit is making the points and the wire they’re on heat up and the plastic part isn’t designed for that temperature.
I’d check for shorts and the voltage the alternator is charging at- if the alternator is suspect try disconnecting it and starting the car and see if the fault remains (the car will run for some time on just the battery voltage, long enough for you to see if the fault is there)
Cheers

Wow, wasn’t expecting a reply this long after my post! The guy who wanted the parts made a huge detour as part of another trip and went and stripped the car of a great number of parts- actually far more than it would have been reasonable for to ask a stranger to do. So all good in the end. Thanks for the reply Cheers

Hi, I don’t believe the car with green relays prime the fuel circuit, the later cars with a white relay do but they’re ecu controlled. Some more explanation of the circuit here: www.240turbo.com/fuelpumprelay.htmlIf the rest of the circuit is what you want, you could add a priming button to the dash? I appreciate that’s not quite as neat as having the relay do it for you. You could add a small circuit to act as a primer… again not as neat as finding a relay that has that functionality built in. Cheers

We live inside the current ULEZ zone and have both a modern, ULEZ compliant car and the Volvo estate in my avatar, which is not - and not old enough yet to be exempt (6 years to go!)
If there's any possibility you might drive within either the current zone, or the bigger zone after it's expanded, I recommend you set up an auto-pay account with TFL and register your vehicles there. Then instead of fighting the not very good webpage every time you need to pay a charge, you'll just get a direct debit bill at the end of the month depending on use - this also removes the "did I, didn't I?" question of whether you entered the zone or not since signage can be missed, and removes the possibility of forgetting to pay the charge.
The same auto-pay account works for multiple cars and also the congestion charge, so we don't need to fight the webpage for that either.
So for the modern car we get charged if we go into the congestion charge zone for the Volvo we get charged ULEZ and then the congestion charge on top of that if we go into the congestion charge zone.
Cheers

What became of the white Frogeye? It's parked in the same barn as the Arkley, similarly nothing has been done with it. It's in much worse condition than the Arkley as the rook leak was over it and it was left with the hood down, but it's a complete early mk1 sprite. It's not mine, but if you're interested in it I can pass your details on. Cheers

Hi- sort of, it morphed into one although I thought there’d be some interest in the first half of the thread (the finding it bit). Please move it if it’s breaking the rules here. Cheers If you want to post it as a for sale ad you'll need to add the details to the title or make specific for sale ad for it Ok, I've edited the title - please move it to the "cars for sale 1985 and older" section. Thanks
