I thought this might attract some polarised comments; they've certainly made it different!
The colour doesn't quite do it for me, same effect in a very vivid deep blue would though. I don't like the diamond 'quilted' effect any more than on Bentleys but they have done a very nice job, cream doesn't work on the T-bar. I imagine the very small boot is now full of pressurisation equipment for the suspension. Sad to see the Stag grille logo lost instead of reinvented. I thought the wheels work quite well.

(within reason / someone suggested Llanelli on the previous page - that is a bit of a stretch from Leicester...). I'd suggested that you get a quote from Weston Paintworx Llangennech, (more for reference than anything else). Julian has the capability to spray HGV's & big plant but his primary interest is in classic cars. He did an 'everything off' full body 'down to gelcoat' restoration & respray on my Dad's Gilbern Genie earlier this year, this included recovering seats, (a very nice job), and a 4 wheel refurb with detailed photo-portfolio of work. It came in at £3½K which I thought was pretty good price. I think the car would have been good enough to win the Gilbern Owner's Club show class concours but we didn't get there before the cut off time. He can arrange collection / delivery so if the quote was keen enough it might have been worth you considering this option. This is some of the other stuff he was doing when I was last there; E-Type reborn by Chris, on Flickr Ford Escort Mark 2 rally car by Gareth williams, on Flickr Gilbern Invader Mark 3 by Gareth williams, on Flickr

Fantastic condition. Amazing to consider that in the past quarter of a century the numbers of this model on UK has roads has fallen from nearly 9,000 to only 8!

If you did a fair bit of the prep yourself I'd have thought you'd get a competent blowover for under a grand? £1k to paint a large van - minimal paint & materials alone are going be £600 + and that's skimping at that - and just how long is that is £1k blowover going to last - well that's an easy answer - it wont - you would be very, very lucky to find a competent bodyshop that will let something this size in their yard for £1k let alone put in a booth and paint it - add to this most bodyshops will not touch client prepped motors for just paint alone has they have a reputation to maintain and painting over the top of somebody else's poor prep is not going to do the bodyshops reputation any good what so ever. You are readily into the £3 - £5k region to turn out a good quality job dependant upon the amount of work required We live in different parts of the UK where people put a different price on their skills as they can live a lot more cheaply. I knew people who would have happily worked over my prep, albeit on a 'cash-in-hand' basis. It depends what standard of finish he's happy with. If he wants a high standard of finish and intends to keep the vehicle in the long term then a cheap re-spray would undoubtedly not be for him.

OK, my least favourite version of the XJ's is the XJ40 but I can't understand why on earth you'd want to put a Diesel in one?? Unless you're delusional you'd have known you were taking on a thirsty car? Part and parcel of the XJ experience for most was the sedate, quiet motoring with power & speed on tap when needed. Why on earth would you want to ruin this with a clattery knocking smoky lump in the name of frugality??! (Not to mention the enormous amount of work that would be required to facilitate this conversion). Sell the Jag to someone who will appreciate it for what it is and buy a comfy, clattery, Audi or Merc Diesel. I think your on the wrong forum mate, this is retro rides not the JEC. On here things get changed because it's different, challenging and fun. BTW the XJ40 is the best Jag in my opinion. My apologies, I hadn't realised you wanted to swap out the engine because it would mark your car out as 'different', your intro read like you just don't like the fuel consumption, (it's a Jag - Duh!) I don't dislike the XJ40 it's just bottom of my XJ saloon shapes list, I don't know many Jaguar purists who are overly keen on that version, (yours looks very handsome and sound by the way). There are a lot of people who use these forums who enjoy classics / retros for what they are - not just modders.

If you haven't already done so it's always checking the MOT history as this can provide some idea of how well, or how poorly, the car has been looked after. If it's failing on a load of stuff every year and the same MOT advisories are cropping up year after year it suggests lax or absent maintenance.

Fuego TL. Cumbria. £6,800.00 1984. Driving & MOT'd. The only example remaining on the roads in the UK, (with 2 SORN'd). Even with rarity, vendor is possibly being a bit aspirational on price?
