I'd be amazed if the exhaust would affect start/idle where gas volumes are small? Retarded pump timing will affect start significantly. Nick I'd say so too but it will not start once I attach the exhaust downpipe... And without it would start. In al excitement I forgot to video it

Erm, Probably, I can't remember which way round it is though. Although, discussing it on Facebooks having watched the video again, I came to the more likely conclusion it was a lack of throttle, and the glow plugs weren't doing a great deal. I believe a new set was on the cards. Correct I've installed the new glowplugs yesterday and I tried to start. But nothing would only puff a bit of grayish smoke... It might have something to do with the exhaust being led in to a 90deg turn quite soon after the turbo and giving it a lot of back pressure. So today I'll try it without exhaust again and the stop solenoid directly on the battery. Well it started and kept running if I applied throttle! But then I put the exhaust back on and of course it would not start again so clearly I need to remake the exhaust in a more flowing turn and bigger diameter....

which pump do you have there now? the original VP37 in my E34 does use a lift pump, I found a marelli oem replacement on ebay for £30, I think its fairly low pressure. I have a m21 pump out of an E30. And since we're going to run dual tanks i need an external lift pump, it was only 25 euros

Well do I feel like an idiot... I was convinced the pump had its own build in lift pump, not true that does explain why it wouldn't keep running. So tuesday I will receive an electric lift pump will try again then :/ i than noticed this so made a ring on the lathe

Great project, keep it up! And well now we don't have to worry about bee hives in the entire shed cause there was a lot of smoke coming out of it. Be kind to bees, my father in law will happily collect any swarm that bothers you if you're not too far away from Stad. We don't have any bee hives, it was just an expression about the amount of smoke :'). Our neighbor also has keeps bees for the honey so we're always sorted if we ever have a bee problem.

Good news indeed. A glow plug timer relay from a 200 or 300 Tdi would be an astute purchase to aid starting. A glow plug relay is on the to do list as is connecting the glowplugs. As is adjusting the injection pump timing.

So today it was time for the first start. After a while we figured out the mechanical pump has two points for the stop solenoid... So without glow plugs and the help of some ether it started! And well now we don't have to worry about bee hives in the entire shed cause there was a lot of smoke coming out of it.

Although I'm running permanent 4wd my Salisbury rear and Rover front diffs are holding up ok so far, including some accidentally over-enthusiastic acceleration where it has spun the front wheels The slow changing LT77 is probably helping since I can't do my usual quick change and dump the clutch style.... my other project is a mx5 engine powered herald and thats running its original 50+ year old diff. Made for around 60bhp and no torque I'm now pushing 120bhp and 115nm of torque through it. and i "accidentally" always over enthusiastic accelerate away from everything and somehow it still lives *knocks on wood*

Even coiler axles need a bit of work to deal with them being used in any way enthusiastically. A Salisbury unit will stand up to them, but the 2 pin Rover Diffs have a somewhat shorter life expectancy with them. Luckily ours has a rear Salisbury axle but not a front one...

A quick question, did you need to add a bearing to support the input shaft on the transfer box ? Might have missed this but was wondering how you kept the join between box and transfer stable . Looking good - must not look at m20 prices.... There's a extra bearing on the shaft in the transferbox. as there would only be a needle bearing on the end holding it in place which would give out quite quickly. ps its an M51 they're really cheap whit a complete car around it which would make it easier to keep all the ecu stuff ;p

The 6B is a good solid engine, but also a hulking great lump of a thing with enough torque to mince everything downstream of the gearbox. BMW and Merc sixes in the 2.5-3 litre Range have enough go to make a Land Rover feel nimble, but without the weight penalty, or overloading the driveline. thats correct with a 6BT you'd need to swap to coiler axles otherwise its one throttle blip and your diffs are spreaded out over the street

4BT is truly what Land Rovers need. I've always found the tdi units lacking. you mean a 6BT more cylinders more fun!

80x82.8mm bore x stroke for an M51, the 606 is 87x84mm. Keep the EDC pump and a power chip and 170bhp and 350nm is achievable. The reckoning is that they have better low end torque with a mechanical pump They were always knocked for a lack of bottom end in the P38, but they were pulling fairly tall gears, and a lotnof weight. If it's anything like the M52 then it relies on the gearing being somewhere right (and letting it rev) to work properly. Looks like it shouldn't take too much longer to see how it works out anyways. Don't wanna have a electronic throttle so going to keep the mechanical pump. As for hearing I know it's going to be a bit on the short side, so it's on my agenda to change that.

That BMW 6 looks a good fit in the engine bay, better than my OM606! I presume it's a narrow bore lump with long stroke so should be quite torquey? Should have somewhere around 280nm of torque. And it's almost a square engine (stroke 82mm and bore 80)

looks very low in that engine bay especially as its an OHC engine, is it quite short compared to LR engines? seems the LR TDI engines are very tall! It sits quite low indeed but it clears everything and the axle wouldn't hit it with articulation. And its indeed a short engine especially compared to the 2.6 which was massive lol. I'ts also significantly lighter
