Good news - The wheel debacle has ended!
If you recall I have been battling to find some wheels with the correct offset, that look stock/Oe and that fit the large SL500 4 pots.
My father has an old 124 estate that has had lots of wheels courtesy of eBay, currently she’s sporting a very subtle set of 7 1/2” rear and 7” front 8 hole alloys that are to square Merc’s what teledial’s are to Alfa’s. They look great, are 16” and most importantly the ET is correct, especially at the front. 124’s have a bit of an odd ET that are a bit tricky to get correct and fit larger brakes.
I test fitted his rare 16” x 7”wide ET 46 fronts and they only just touched the bump (pictured below) on the callipers - The ET is spot on and a small 3mm spacer to move the wheels out of the bumps way would be nicely accommodated!!!! The problem is those 8 holes in that size are RARE, I have only see one pair on eBay ever. This was confirmed on the fb 124 group.
Then a few days later just before the festive break The Mercedes Jesus appeared on eBay, out of the blue with.... 2 brand new old stock never fitted, 8 hole, 16x7” et46 alloys. They must be 25years old at a minimum, a few storage marks and of course, they were in my kitchen a week later. I’m still over the moon!!!!!!
I trial fitted them tonight with the spacers and they are perfect. The old man also gave me a pair of 16x8” et 34’s for the rear and they will do very nicely once refurbished.
Hopefully this set up will look oe, neat and still under the radar.
Stuff like this is still out there, so keep at it!

Neil – That’s a mk3 white Astra GSi AKA The Ashtray. I got talking to the owner/builder Joe and what a super chap he is too. One of ‘Our People’. Its running a heavily boosted Redtop pumping out a good 700 brake, now consider it probably weighs 700kg (its stripped)….
Its party piece was doing the whole run with both front tyres lit. Its one of the few vids I took that day – I’ll see if I can upload a copy, however the wind noise is terrible. I really should have got a ride in it – the highlight of the day for me.
Thats astonishing performance, well done! I have to ask, what on earth is that 2nd placed Astra running?!?!?!?!

16 seconds of gold (for me) – turn those speakers right up!!!
I’m not sure what is my favourite bit? The speed of the thing as it arrives in shot and departs out the other side, or is it the tyre noise? the ripping through the air noise? the ‘airliner turbofan’ turbo noise or the reactions of the small crowd at the end of the runway???
Dead Chuffed. Enjoy.

Bet that would do some awesome N/S wheel pulls if you could get enough traction. Funnily enough, the day before you wrote that I was cocking about with some good friends in some old smokers and managed to lift the NS wheel coming over a crest what in 3rd in a 400+ BHP 124 estate! Its got a Quaife ATB and when it hooks up the front lifts in a comical fashion. A still is attached; the rest of the vid to be linked to this thread in mid Oct hopefully.

Went to DPUK yesterday and the rollers on their Dyno have much more aggressive groves which stop the wheels spinning. Managed to do a full pull for the first time without any slip and OMG she put it down.
Heart breaker Dyno too - no wonder it feels feral on the road!!!!

What about converting it to an auto? One of the modernish American gearboxes should be strong enough if Merc don't do one. Would make it more sensible for touring but still probably be just as quick/quicker when needed. A manualised beefed up Yankee autobox with a 3000 ish stall convertor would be the perfect transmission. DPUK even do an adaptor-plate for this and I have driven a OM606/4L80 powered Charger with this set up. Very smooth and you could load it up on the convertor for super take offs!

This has to be the ULTIMATE oily sleeper? 180+ mph and not a single piece of Zender, BBS, AMG, Brabus or whatever, love it. Had you thought about doing a mild (<=300hp!!!) job to a TE model? Loads more room for the camping/touring stuff and means you can keep the super as it is? I'm absolutely agog at the performance of your car. Carry on! Thanks for the kind words – and; Absolutely. Luke from Dieselpumpuk had a 275bhp semi-superturbo 124TE that drove beautifully and had much more friendly small turbo with near instant response and a good bit of torque too. Low smoke too and 2 large silencers. As a daily proposition possibly the ultimate useful car as you could fit a smaller exhaust system thus incorporate more silencing, low smoke pump, an easier pressure plate thus lower clutch pressure, etc in the chassis of the 124 with its comfort and space. Simple to build and maintain too. The hard bit would be finding a pre face lift rot free estate for sensible money…
Now. My father has a metallic green with beige MBTex interior 1994 E220TE 124 manual that is for a face lift car comically rust free. The engine is a dog and absolutely gutless and secretly I wouldn’t mind if it packed up (as its much slower than it should be) and get offered it to me.
I would, with all that I have learnt fit a 606, 6 speed box (716.654 or similar), sprinter SMF and clutch, 6mm pump and a nice exhaust system. I would leave the rest standard and as you say – keep the Superturbodiesel for mucking about in.
I’m still going to try and calm the STD down a touch – I do have a plan….

Wow – and thank you all for your enthusiasm – That’s the thing I like about the RR forum – kindred spirits that appreciate each other efforts (even if they are not specifically your taste etc).

Is the project running? How are you getting on with the 716.654 box? Have you utilised the original linkage and does it rattle at all? Thinking of upgrading mine at some point.... Cheer!

Camping duties again – got the car crammed full of stuff,4 man tent etc for the 4 of us inc baby high chair, tables, chairs etc. Quite a cavernous boot. Contrary to what I wrote in the last post…. I’m going to try and calm the car down a bit while retaining the current power levels (got be in the early 500’s). The acceleration is its USP, I need to try my best to keep it. I have a plan – when I make some progress I’ll report back on how effective or not it is…
