Didn't get round to this until the weekend just gone. Oil change was done first, then the wheel bearing. Wheel and drum came off I cut the old bearing off, much quicker than using the press, and it would allow me to inspect the bearing surfaces. No noticeable wear could be seen, but there was a couple of chips out of the hardened surface of the outer track. This explains why there was plenty of noise, but no discernable play. The new bearing and locking ring were pressed on to the half shaft and once slotted back where it came from, normal quiet running was resumed.

The end of August saw a photographer pay me a visit to do a photo shoot for Practical Classics magazine. I wasn't expecting to be pictured myself, but sure enough, sporting my work clothes and a generally dishevelled look, I was. An hour or so later, the required shots were acquired, and he went off to his next assignment. (A Rolls Royce no less) I don't know when the car is to be featured, but I'll be sure to post it up. In the mean time, a couple more of my lacklustre photographic efforts.

Definitely a good call using Bigg Red - these are the same type of calipers as yours once given their treatment. Still going strong six years later on my Cav.

Still regularly getting out and about in this thing - I moved it over to the shed the other day for a bit of fettling. It needs an oil change, and a rear wheel bearing replacing. Ill hopefully get that stuff sorted at the weekend.

So far this year the only component to give up was a front wheel bearing. It took me most of the day to fix it due to arthritis related restricted mobility, but got it done with enough time left for a decent ride out. Still scrubs up well.

Annoyingly, I've had very little time available for this over the last couple of months. So far, after nearly 400 miles, it's been good. I need to address an annoying rattle in the drivers door at some point, but other than that, all is well in GLi world.

Many thanks kind people. Can we have a photo of them both together? They are stored in different places at the moment, but should be able to do this soon. 👍 Mileage milestone passed. 150 miles done since MOT. So far, the dash lights stopped working, then fixed themselves. The dimmer switch is the culprit here, I can try cleaning it up, or just bypass it if necessary. I lost most of my gears this morning, just needed to tighten the selector rod pinch bolt though. Apart from those small hiccups, it's been fine. I'll go round the car checking all nuts and bolts are tight next week, just in case anything is planning to fall off.

Being able to change the clutch without removing the gearbox on some Vauxhalls was a pretty sweet feature.

Good luck, not that this should need any luck to pass Cheers! The brakes haven't bedded in yet, and only just passed, other than that it was tip top. MOT and tax now sorted. Finally back home after 4 years away.

Pre MOT checks done this morning - only problem found was one of the washer jets was blocked. Did a couple of miles up and down the farm driveway to scrub the new brakes in a little, they work better already, so hopefully they'll be up to par by the time I've driven it to the test centre. The underside is now sporting some dirt, the minty freshness is already a thing of the past. It was alas inevitable. MOT booked tomorrow......

Interesting that they fitted an ARB to the rear torsion beam - you wouldn't think it'd be necessary... I imagine that it must have been beneficial, otherwise the bean counters would'nt have allowed it. Still waiting for a suitable time slot to get an MOT on this - but in the mean time, a small package arrived from the U.S. of A. They're the right colour, and almost the correct size, so got some stuck in position. Should hopefully be back on the road in a week or so.

After a recent tidy up of the shed, I thought that now there was plenty of room I might as well fit the other new steering arm and balljoint. (Its been a while since the passenger side one was done!) After a bit of faffing, and one of the gaiters tearing, it was finally done and tracked up. The next job on the car will be a bit of a clean underneath, its getting pretty mucky under there. That can wait until my two poster is installed.

The rear wheels/brakes were sorted on Friday. The wheels were stuck on the drums as both had been painted, and this made it a tight fit! It was sorted by removing the paint from the drum spigot and applying copper grease. One last look at clean rear brakes. Drums and wheels back on, then bearings adjusted, split pins + dust cover fitted. Trims on. Had the offer of a bit of time on a two poster today, so got stuck in to fettling the exhaust. Cable ties have been holding the exhaust up since before Christmas. Quick look about to make sure nothing has been leaking. I had to shorten the rearward part of the mid section to allow the back box to fit. Then the mid section was welded back together as it had been cut to enable shipping. It was now gas tight, so it got a bit of a drive around the yard. Just the pinstripes left to do now. (Plus putting the front mudflaps back on, as I've found some better fixings for them!)

Most of my spare time has been eaten up by tidying up the shed. Got rid of a load of junk, rearranged some stuff, and installed a fridge for the summer months. A few small jobs were attended to on the car now the shed was tidy, first up was fitting some grommets into the sill ends. The front mudflaps went on next. The block of wood was used to set them at the same height each side. The rest of the tailgate badges went on. Now the back end is finally completed! The shiny new wheel trims were dug out of storage and the front ones were fitted. I need to fit the castle nuts and split pins before the rears can go on, then all that's left to do is fettle the exhaust and apply some pinstripes. I've not been able to find any in a flat grey - everything available is in metallic grey/silver which just doesn't look right. If anyone can point me in the right direction of some flat grey 4mm/2mm pinstripes I'd be most grateful.

This build is quite amazing! Can I ask what was used in the "bit of treatment from the paint bloke to restore the shine lost by the deep clean" of the mudflaps? Many thanks! I believe they were painted satin black using the same additives used when painting the rear spoiler. (Plasticiser?) This leaves the paint flexible so it doesn't flake off. Got cracking with a few jobs this afternoon - the new nearside mirror was fitted first. The rear mudflaps were then fitted. The stormy weather then took out the electricity supply to the farm, ending play for today.

Cool. I have a pair of very similar looking flaps, probably ex-Nova/Corsa. In reasonable condition, if anyone's interested? can you post a picture of them? I know someone who is after a pair.

Do tell us where you found the missing mudflap badge! I bought a couple of single flaps with badges off Ebay - no harm in having a spare. Didn't get a right lot of time for this at the weekend, but managed to make a little more progress. The metal parts of the mudflaps got a couple of coats of a rubberised black enamel. Hopefully this means that it won't all chip off in use. The painted pieces were then reunited with the rubbery bits. They're now sat on a shelf waiting for me to get the time to fit them.

Been busy elsewhere this weekend, but started getting the mudflaps back together. No more time for the foreseeable, but should get back on it next weekend.

It is the type with the metal piece that is bonded to the screen - I used Loctite 319 which is specifically designed for this job.
