Changed the rtab bushes and hey presto the car now drives like a different motor. Chuffed to bits! the old bushes had ovaled and you could see where the metal pin had been rubbing and looked polished as a result! thanks for the help

Have a look at the rear wheel, if they look like they are toeing in at the front its points to the RTAB's We had a 325ti E46 that used to wander at speed ( it was almost like it wanted to change lanes all on its own) and that was down to the subframe bushes on that one, they do tend to go through bushes more than some other cars. Whe I first got the car it scrubbed the rear tyres out very quickly much to my annoyance. you could visibly see them pointing inwards. My mate slacked off the mounts and reset it as best as he could, but did say he couldn't get it spot on. Tyre wear is even since. I will have a look at the subframe when we tackle the RTABs. Thanks!!

Rear trailing arm bushes need replacing. Not necessarily totally broken, but too soft That's my thought too. I've ordered some flo-flex poly replacements as i've found them to be pretty good on my mx5 and its also the brand i've used on the bmws arb bushing. thanks!

My BMW e36 318is coupe has developed a weird handling problem. The car feels like the rear end is steering when accelerating or deccelerating. It's especially noticeable when changing gear, where there is a noticeble twitch from the back end. It almost feels like the rear axle is moving around and is much more noticeable in the wet than it is in the dry. In the past year I have replaced all 4 shocks and springs (meyle rear shocks, jom coilovers up front with meyle top mounts), new meyle drop links, poly-bushed ARB, replaced the front lower arms so I am pretty sure the problem isn't coming from the front of the car. I have had the rear up in the air and can't see anything obviously wrong. It went through an MOT with the twitchy handling. If it were a failing bushing I would have expected my mate who did the mot to pick it up and he is very fussy. I am at a loss as to where to look next. Current thoughts are to replaced the trailing arm bushes where the arms bolt onto the body.
Any help would be super appreciated as it is spoiling my love for the car.

aqua-blasting is perfect for this sort of job if you can find someone with a machine. won't damage the surface, but will remove 99% of the crud

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/173566430379?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l264918" BMW Z4 2 piece split rims with matching runway branded tyres. Wheels are all BBS branded genuine BMW. 18"x8.5 rears, 18"x8j fronts. Faces are in good condition, inside, rear of the wheels could use a repaint if you are fussy about that sort of thing. 3 tyres have lots of tread left 5mm+, one rear has just over 3mm,. No cracks or previous repairs that I am aware of. Certainly nothing visual to suggest so.

They are chalk and cheese. I have an early mx5, it wants to be driven, needs to be driven, the z3 on the other hand seems more of a cruiser to me. I tested a z3 a couple of weeks back and almost bought it, but alas the seller changed his goalposts on the price. The one I tested was a 4 pot 140 bhp. I didn't find it too bad on performance, ok it's no rocket ship, but there is enough there to have fun with on a back road. That model if my 2 e36 318is's are anything to go by should be pretty frugal too (the 318i has the same twin cam 4 pot). I average around 38mpg out of mine, which means I have fun for longer! The 6 pots aren't great on fuel, my old e36 325 would struggle to see high 20s! There may have been an issue with your 325i. Was it a manual or an auto? My M3 gets mid 20s and a run will generally see 30MPG. That's with a similar engine architecture to yours. Likewise, my E36 323i would see mid 20s for town driving, and low-mid 30s on a run. I will admit an E39 520i 2.2 wasn't that's great. It would do low twenties in town, and low 30s on a run; no different to its larger brethren within the M54 engine family. No issue with it what so ever. Ran perfectly. It was a manual and I used it mostly to trev around the hilly backroads of north oxfordshire in such a way I often had a big grin on my face! On average i would go from full tank to 1/4 tank in around 230 miles. never let it drop below a 1/4 ever. My 318is driven in the same spirited fashion will see 350 miles with ease and I have nearly as much fun.

I do fancy owning an early Z3 but after enjoying MX5's, I just a tad worried that it will be a huge disappointment in terms of driving satisfaction. They are chalk and cheese. I relocated my plate to the bottom of the bumper (below the grill opening), but I also have the oem bottom lip spoiler on mine. Been that way for 8 years and hasn't been smashed to bits yet!

How about a mazda 323f either the one with pop up lights or the later model? Both have a very decent chassis for a fwd car, a good selection of engines, the 1.5 is frugal and nippy, needs to be revved though, the 1.6 and 1.8 are very similar to the mx5 engines, so are pretty good, then there is the little v6 which is a great engine if it has been looked after, pretty quick too.

^ One thing I would add is that the n series 4 pots found in the lesser e46 cars are an exception to the rule. The have more than their fair share of issues, cam chain issues, oil usage, poor mpg (in my case anyway on my old e46 318ti and perhap linked to the oil usage), cam covers are prone to leaking and a pain to fix, then there is the breather system which is prone to clogging. The rear diff on mine also gave way, but I put that down to the lifetime oil in the diff. Lifetime my Ar$e! Needless to say I got rid of the e46 318ti and kept the e36 318is! A shame in a way because I have to say the rest of the e46 is very well screwed together and I loved the interior on my compact.

Having owned a non vanos e36 325 I can confirm getting anything close to 30mpg is pretty much impossible. Even driving like an OAP I struggled to average 28mpg. To do this sucked all of the pleasure out of having a 6 pot soundtrack. Drive it like it deserves to be driven and low to mid 20s is more realistic. If I had money to burn, i'd miss it, but as I don't the 318is is a happy mix of nippyness and frankly stunning fuel economy for what it is. It's also a nice sounding 4 pot with a quality exhaust system installed. I forget what make I have on mine, but it produces a lovely rasp on full throttle, yet isn't excessively loud.
