I can sympathise too George, especially having just had another battle with customs and couriers here in Peru. This time I was hit with 23% import duties ($266) plus S/.400 (about another 100 GBP) for "handling & admin" fees by the Courier..They tried to get another S/.100 off me saying I had declared the manufacturers incorrectly on the paperwork, then I pointed out that I never filled in the manufacturers´details, and if there was something written there then someone else was at fault - all went quiet for a day or so then I got an email telling me the parcel had, as if by magic, suddenly been released and was on it's way...
Still, at least the parts arrived. I'm still waiting for some things sent via the postal service back in September...
I really must put SWMBO's name on parcels, gringos do seem to end up with more delays and charges when receiving bits... It's and expensive business running a Disco 3 here.. There are a few P38s for sale at the momento, prices seem to be around $12000 -$13000...

Out of interest which mount? I've had quite a few Dolomites/Toledos and the only axle mount I ever had fail was a semi-trailing arm cup. What I did have many times was the trailing arm collapse in the section where the damper mounts, as it's a weak point. Eventually chopped up some other trailing arms and used those to plate the outside of the best set I had, and that cured it.

Good stuff! Nice when that happens (re the duty!). I had one delivery here that came in under the duty that I was expecting, and another way over (with wishbones, bushes, EPB module, brakes, service bits etc)...

Ah yes, the Metro is nearly the only one that works, apart from the tourist railway to Macchu Picchu.
Anyways, sorry for the thread hijack! Did your wheels arrive in the end?

Good luck for the wheels! Surprised re the railway here in Lima, there's very left in the way of functioning railways here! Can you say which one they were asking about?

Excellent thread, I am enjoying this. Mind you, that's partly because I've trying to keep a Discovery 3 going in Peru, and all the stories regarding Customs and local shops etc are so familiar to my experiences here in Peru too..! Locals wanted around 500 GBP for one front Wheel bearing, in the UK the same part is around 70GBP..
Good stuff, look forward to more updates!

Yup, would like to see pics of how it all goes together. I'd thoroughly recommend Faulkner Springs if you are thinking custom made, same price as lower quality off the shelf stuff but very well made to your specs.
As it's not been mentioned, (apologies if teaching you to suck eggs) can I recommend popping a new good quality clutch on the MX5 engine before it goes in? Again just thinking with the extra weight and slightly taller ratio overall in first gear.

Love the thread, my old man had an Amazon when I was younger. A word of caution on the MX5 engine conversión. Although it has 115bhp (didnt the B20 develop a similar amount when new?), the MX5 is a lighter car (around 200kg lighter I think) than the Amazon, you may find the lack of torque in a little 16V engine a bit of an issue. From a quick google, the B20 engine has 123 lbft, whereas the MX5 1.6 pushes out 99 lbft at 500 rpm higher. The 1.8 MX5 lump may be ok, with 122 lbft. If the oil light is coming on after a hard run, sounds like it needs new bearing shells and an oil cooler..
