It’s because you’re using the hub off a vp44. You need the one off a vp30.
You’ll also run into problems with the fuel lines to the injectors, they’re different too on a vp44. Again you need vp30 ones.

Hello Dez I just discovered this forum via a search on conversion to mechanical pump on transit 2.4 I am doing the conversion with a land rover 300Tdi pump, I removed the original black ring from the nose of the 300Tdi pump, I wanted to put back the transit pump ring, but the diameter of the hole of the black ring of the transit pump is larger. So the black ring has some play on the 300Tdi pump, there are several millimeters of play between the axis of the land rover pump and the black ring of the transit pump how did you adapt that? Thanks in advance Unsure what you mean by ‘black ring’. Do you mean the hub? If so you just have the wrong parts, I wouldn’t want to get into adapting tapers on a friction fit part.

Nice to see so many well made objects in your life rather than all this modern throwaway tat. I spy a mid-90s Lava Dome, are any of the other bikes Konas? Bikes and especially Konas is a whole other aspect worthy of a thread on its own. I’ve had Proably 25 Konas alone in the last few years. Double that by the time you add in all the other retro bikes- gt, Marin, orange, etc. at the minute I still have 4 or 5 Konas, a couple of orange p7s, a GT Karakoram and a Klein pulse pro laying round that are in the retro xc type bike category. I’m more into the original slalom/hardcore hardtail type bikes these days, as that’s what I moved onto later on. I’ve currently got a couple of trailstars, a couple of Azonic DS-1s, a Jack flash, a Gack speed demon, heavy tools dual, Curtis mx24, specialized p3, 24seven darkangel…. And Proably a dozen more I’ve bought to break. But yeah I have a few bikes 🤣

Loving the updates Dez, the garage move must have been painful. Dan. Yeah, there was definitely moments of ‘what the f-k am I doing’ giving up a space like that.

Just had a good catch-up read - very enjoyable as always. Those old Crittal windows, when en-masse like that, always remind me of the old Bomber & Fighter Command control towers. Nice, but need secondary glazing to keep the heat in! Being a northerner that doesn’t concern me 😉😂 Tbh I’ve spent most of my working life outpace so I don’t really feel the cold, if I canstay out of the wind and rain anyway. It’s a bit of a blessing really, saves me a fortune in heating!

It was nearly another month before I was back up to do a bit of stuff. I’d done a bit of paperwork in the meantime 🤣 At this point I was using a bangertastic Honda civic I bought for £150 so I didn’t care how abused it got. Good job really as a big pile of quarry tiles popped up locally for the best price. Good job they were those lightweight ones so I definitely wasn’t overloaded. I had a bit of time doing some general maintenance type stuff. Apple tree was doing well that year. Most of those are still in the chest freezer in case I ever get round to doing some cider. Once all the curse word that wasn’t mine was cleared off the concrete in front of the garage I jetwashed it and the garage and edged it up where the grass was creeping over, as well as tidying up the corner where the bench was. Tbh the concrete here has seen some action over the years and is beat to sh1t. One day I might redo it, once I’ve done everything else. That’s not my cat. Although the major focus was now getting out of my workshop pin Essex, I was thinking ahead to building projects and buying stuff up north as it came up and I was there to collect. Massive crittal windows are good cos I likes crittal.

thats come a long way since the fire tried to claim it, its defined itself as a hot rod! love it. am rather partial to the honda hrv in 3 door form too, quite handy things! bit hard to find now in good nick for decent money tho. back to the A, what did we actually get the Y block in? or was it mainly trucks and A series big vans? Nothing UK market at all. It’s an American engine, came in ford and Mercury passenger cars from ‘53-‘62, as fords first OHV after the flathead. As product lines diverged it was used in the fairlanes, galaxies, Mercurys, edsels and thunderbirds. although the ones that are really of interest are the ‘56-57 engines. They also came in ford trucks and they ran up to ‘64. Parts have to be cherry picked across the years and models to really make a hot rod worthy engine, the first couple of years were relatively small capacity with smaller valves and ports in the heads and only 2 barrel carbs. A ‘53 239ci is only a 140hp engine. Mine in this is 292ci with the best heads, biggest valves, high ratio rockers and a 4 barrel carb and is at least double the power output. I do have a full house factory stroker 312ci motor tucked away as well that will probably eventually make it way in here.

So this is it. The last trip of stuff from the old house into the new one. Utter chaos as everything was just dumped through the door in any remaining space. But, it was done. This was the 25th July 2021. I don’t know of that was the day we actually completed, but it was within a couple of days if not, as I collected something big and heavy out of the garden I couldn’t move by myself which the new owner helped with, and that was on the 29th. That was this- I now understand what all the ‘heavy plant crossing’ signs are all about, two of us nearly died dragging it into the van on a sack Barrow with ramps, so the engine crane was very much needed to get it off again! That’s not really the end of the southern story as I still had my workshop, which a lot of stuff from the house we weren’t keeping had gone to whilst I sold it all off. The Inlaws still lived nearby so I could stop there whilst I now did the second half, the workshop sort-out/downsize/relocation. In comparison moving a few vanloads of stuff from the house was a walk in the park! Also, I no longer had use of the sprinter as the new owner of the house needed it back to do some works/changes he wanted to do, so I was back in smaller vehicles for a while.

I either lurked a bit at first or possibly had another username, hence me not joining with this account until November.
There’s not many things I’ve had for 20 years so something as throwaway as a forum account being one of them is quite an achievement 😆

It seems I had a few weeks break doing other things whilst waiting for the solicitors to do nothing, as is the protocol when selling a house. Then, more of this- I know things were hotting up by this point, as this lot was our main furniture, and it was about a week before we completed on the house sale. Dogs still didn’t care. As long as they got their treat when along for the ride anyways 😂 But seeing an empty house one end and all the furniture from it in the other brought home that this was really happening.

If I had time, each time I went up with a van load I tried to get a job done. Whilst they were fitting the central heating I stripped the wall ‘panelling’ in the front room. I think I’d already pulled it off the wall they’d be putting the rad on, but whilst I was keeping an eye on them I did rest. It was hardboard nailed to tile lats nailed to the wall with a few good coats of gloss on top of that, so was wetter than an otters pocket behind it. Out of sight, out of mind… The damp tideline can be evidenced here. Thompson was my grandads surname, so it’s fair to assume this was done with leftovers from the renovation of their house in 1971. The heating being put in highlighted that the floorboards in the little back bedroom (that we intended to make into an upstairs bathroom) were a bit sh1te. Only 5/8” thick and very spongey with age, they wouldn’t take the weight of a bath when point loaded on its feet. Luckily I had a stash of 7/8” skinny boards I’d rescued from somewhere I can’t remember for doing repairs at the old house, and there was just enough to relay the whole room. Evidence that these joists aren’t on their first life- I found treasure when I had the floor up. A load of old pictures, negatives, letters and coins. I don’t know who the people in the pics are and I think anyone that would is now dead. I have a suspicion that one of them is Jack, Harold’s father. One letter was to Harold inviting him to an institute of locomotive engineers lecture. This will (eventually) make a nice little bathroom though, although it’s a tiny room it has a nice feel to it.

As said above, it’s a lot of projects down the line. To be brutally honest a wanky old scimitar is probably the worst car I own, even if I am going to be doing interesting things to it.
I buy bits here and there that I know I’ll need and squirrel them away, but haven’t done much else to the car. I actually need to pull the motor and box to dispose of them and allow measurements, but I haven’t even done that yet.
Once I’ve finished the ranger/47 truck(which is meant to be ‘this years’ vehicle), taken the A racing to pendine, finished building workshop no.2 and reroofed workshop no.1, finished off the camper modifications, and finished various house jobs, I might have a look at it 😂

None of it is particularly worth much, especially since it’s unknown if they’re actually viable rebuild cores. The gearbox is a spur gear truck 4spd and nigh on worthless

Tbh I’m at the stage with this thread where I’m struggling to remember how/when things happened. This period was S.T.R.E.S.S. Sorting everything out with a diminishing timescale, and I was spending most of my time loading, unloading, or driving a van. I’d cleared out the garage as much as possible, so I could take a bit of stuff up I was definitely keeping to go in there. The priority was emptying the Suffolk house though, as I think we’d sold it by this point, or at least knew who was buying it even if it wasnt finalised. But the big news was this- 7 radiators and a combi boiler later, we had a big tick next to the central heating requirement. The work wasnt to my standard(more about that later), I’ve already redone some of it and more will get done over time, but that was kinda always the plan as I wasn’t springing for proper cast iron rads at this point. They will be added in room by room at a later date as the cosmetic state of each room requires it. It cost something like 3.5k to get this in and working, it was over 5 with the fancy rads. Me standing over them and/or me doing the cutting and lifting lead to a minimum of floorboard damage though which was my major concern give the entire house is plumbed under the boards as it’s the only way of hiding stuff. The system works adequately and keeps the house warm which keeps the mrs happy. After some arguing I got them to relocate and sign off all the gas piping as aprt of the original quote, in return for them not having to run the hot water through from the bathroom to the kitchen. Given the state of their pipework layout and soldering I saw this as a good deal 😉, the gas pipe got routed under the floor as part of this with a place for me to tee into it to drop a pipe down the kitchen wall for the cooker. Their ‘core’ work on the boiler and pipework is pretty much all hidden, and I can tidy up any radiator related stuff one by one.

The next time I headed north it involved a very large van. With our new intent to move, I swapped the kit-chens over. The shaker/chalon style unit id had made by a very skilled carpenter friend to go in and sort of match an original Georgian free standing unit I’d acquired just so happened to measure up favourably for the northern house, so we were keeping it and the b&q special could go in the Suffolk house. So that’s where it went. Also this huge oak topped workbench id blagged for free That had been living in our utility room. And this rather large wood burner id bought. Which was duly installed and piped up. This actually went in before the central heating did so was the first heat through the place for a couple of years. No1 dog approved. I also started grabbing some size and era appropriate furniture. I scored this nice Georgian pine wardrobe locally, much more appropriate than the high Victorian mahogany we had in the other house, and more importantly it fitted with the pitched roof (only just though!) We have struggled with other pieces tbh, the spaces we have are not compatible with later Victorian/Edwardian standardised sizes, we needs chest of drawers that are a few inches narrower than normal sizes and it’s a bit of a ballache finding good antique pieces. The inclement weather led to me getting the van a bit stuck, rwd sprinters can’t deal with wet grass let alone a bit of mud. Luckily there’s a local council layby not far away where you can go shovel some road planings out of the ditches round the edge where they’ve pushed them with the digger, so that dealt with the muddyness.

So cool seeing this getting about and used I ended up driving past Sturgate straight by accident recently after hitting a couple of closed road diversions on the way to seeing some family 😂 had no idea where I was then thought, hey I've seen this place on RR haha It’s a funny place ain’t it? Just driving down a country road in the middle of nowhere then f-k I’m driving across the end of a runway! I’m looking forward to going back there next year without a bad misfire and giving the A a kicking down the runway.

Everybody loves a bit of muff 😬 The door top roof sections will go back on at some point. I have them both although one has a terrible gasless mig attempt at repair on the swage- But, I picked this up at the northern swapmeet for a whole 5 quid. It’s for a coupe (even though seller said it was for a sedan…) so the profile is wrong but it’s rust free and the swage section can be swapped over with some surgery, and for that money it’s easier than making tooling. Part of the reason I’ve not fitted them yet is it makes bashing and bending bits to adjust the door gaps harder with them in the way. Once the body has fully settled, the doors have all 3 hinges on, and I’ve repaired the latches fully I’ll get em back on.

Well it posted 32 pics just fine, but has properly mixed up the order. Meh. Circling round and backtracking with some of the other pics I have, not long after the gathering I went on the longest trip I’d done out to sturgate straight, as part of my shakedown and tuning. This was two weeks after the gathering, once I’d got glass in but I was still working through issues with various things. About 15 miles of fast-ish b roads and country lanes. I met up with akku there, as well as running into @czecheredflag It was very much not a hot rod sort of event so it garnered quite a bit of attention. I found my misfire though 😂 A week or so later there was a car show in a local town too. Again not the sort of place you’d except to see such a vehicle, it was mostly over restored british classics owned by old duffers sat in their deckchairs. But as you can see some interesting things did turn up.
