The electrical sun roof..... Dang thing if broken. First suspects were of course the lifting bracket things - in most cases they are broken (cast aluminium) and cause the roof to stick. Has a spare set from the 300D Turbo which I went to install. Luckily someone's allready removed the headliner and the roof was opening. Found nothing broken, only a missing roller and sliding block. Hmm. I replaced the brackets anyway - took a good look at the rest of the roof - nothing apparently wrong. But the roof lid has some bad scratches at the rear and is still sticking when fully opening and wont tilt open... There are some bad scratches at the lid's back. I don't know if it took a hit or if this is cause by malfunction!? Probably th latter... Someone's been at it before - it probably needs a full adjustment. I don't know yet how to do that, I guess I'll have to read it up... But who needs that thing in winter anyway. That's something for the warmer time of year... Odometer has hit the 898.000 mark Cheers, Jan

The pump is 5.5mm, 606 has 6mm elements - it wont give as much power... Maybe I reconsider using a mechanical pump - but apparentl it's possible to get it working "standalone". Also the electronic governor has it's benefits over the mechanical one. As for the gearbox; there are aftermarket ECUs avaliable as far as I'm aware. TÜV will demand the W210 gearbox, for emissions reasons. And then - I like me a 5th gear Dirt cheap means? Getting it here will add a little bit to the price... Cheers, Jan

After a lot of thinking and grief - I have come to the conclusion that this car has to be sold on - I'm fed up with it. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Just kidding! I'm gpoing to buy on of these, as soon as funds allow to pick a good one - prices are still dropping - so I'm going to wait a little. It will also require a lot of research first and some bigger modifications to the front section of the body. Mainly to fit the intercooler in a way that doesn't look like a ghetto hack job... You'r not going to see blue silicone hoses and "boy racer" stuff like this. And then there is of course a hell of a lot of electronics to get the engine and 5-spd. automatik gearbox working in a W124. I LOVE the OM603 Turbo - but it's just not got a future. From what I've gathered so far, the OM606 Turbo does not have many of the problems the 603 has. It's got different problems (stuck glow plugs, leaky plastic fuel lines) that are easyer to overcome. It'll not be as economic as the old 2-valve engine, but still economic enough to justify it. And that with a big shovel of more grunt! MPGs between 35-37 are apparently possible. And then there's Mr. TÜV who needs to give his thumbs up... Or in other words; I'm starting the whole engine conversion thing from new, again. Only much more comlicated... Well - that's the plan anyway - but not before spring/summer next year. In the meanwhile I have a Taxi that needs the odometer to be reset Cheers, Jan

So, the first 1500km are on the counter - it's approaching the 900.000 mark fast... Today the Taxi managed to climb the A8, and as soon as the steep bit was left behind, all fog was gone and it was warm & sunny - a perfect autumn sunday! I met a eBay seller at a fuel station - I arrived early and drank a big cup of coffee in the sun, enjoying the good weather. At some point the seller arrived, with a sad face on. 'Cause I had ridded him of a set of almost new Continental winter tyres - for 70€... A steal in the truest meaning of the word! They are firmly attached to some BMW steel-look-a-like alloys. I'm not asking the question why someone would do wheels like this - but anyway... Maybe I cen sell them on and have the tyres even cheaper And then came the way back - descending into the fog again... I took a detour on my way back, to meet with 3liter & family - which meant going uphill again and leave the fog og the rhine valley behind, again. Moving deeper into the Black Forrest. Destination: the scenic Schwarzenbachtalsperre. It was when I realised that this car, despite it's 3l engine, is all but a race car. 2nd & 3rd gear, full throttle. The slush box makes it quite sluggish compared to a manual... And the Turbo is so much more powerfull! The difference is quite incredible!! Sun, water, relaxing - and a lot of this: And when the sun was disappearing behind the tree tops, it was time to descend into the fog - again. MPG monitor shows 33.6 - that's OK for a heavy, sluggish car. Cheers, Jan

Don't mind travellers at all - only mind chrome wheel arches and speaking of which - I just realised I've not posted some proper pictures of the car yet. I shall chnage this with this set of pictures... You may notice two things: finally got a working antenna for the car. And Light Ivory is by FAR the most dirt attracting colour ever... also had to take off the hydraulic pump again. I've been a bit naive, thinking I could reuse the gaskets. There's no pressurised oil anywhere close to the gaskets (well a gasket an and O-ring sealing the flange to the head & valvecover). Still it leaked a LOT! Must have lost 3-400ml engine oil in 500km! 2€ in parts and 15 minutes of work later - engine leak free again. Well, apart from the radiator... (>.<) Cheers, Jan

That's why I'm using a 3M painter's mask with appropriate filters I basically use it everytime I handle chemicals. Even if it's "just" brake cleaner... also use it for welding & grinding (with dust filter). There's just no point in ruining one's health if it can be avaoided that easy... It requires regular shaving, though. ^yeah, that'll be me welding in the summer sun... rr69h: the one who's closer to my location I'm glad if I can reset the counter untill it's 30th birthday, that'll be enough ;-) Btw: our company cars both are beyond 1 Million km. The S123 230TE has 1.3 million km with it's first gearbox (auto)! Quite impressive...

And continuing with the de-traveller-sation of the wheel arches. Gave the filler a final sand today and applied some coats of filler. Then I pulled the fuse - no way back now!!! Aaaand on with the paint. 2 pack sprays a lot different, this took some getting used to... But I quickly managed to get a OK-ish finish, the paint seems to be a lot more happy to form a uniform surface. Very nice! The painted tyre is to be ignored Gave the inner wheel arches a quick once over with dark grey to cover the traces of the re-spray. I'm quite happy with the outcome. Given my impatience and lousy filler/sanding-work To make it perfekt it would have needed some more goes with filler... But to be honest; neither is this a perfect car by any means, nor will it ever see a museum from the inside. So - fcuk it. From 1-2m away it looks fine - that's more than OK. It'll get a good polish in a few weeks - and that's it. Paint match is also very much OK. 2 pack is awesome! But it's a bummer if you only have to spray smal patches. 85% of the can will go to waste. I've put it in the freezer, maybe I can re-use it once I need some more paint. Cheers, Jan

+1 Here's an example; look at the spring tips worn away by the throw out bearing! And compared to "normal" worn clutch: It's not hard to imagine the forces needed for the bearing to "glide" over the extremly worn springs in the first picture. The pedal was as stiff as a lamp post - with a new clutch it felt like no resistance at all at first. You get used to a heavy clutch. And the new clutch feels weird at first... As long as it's working fine - all is good. Don't worry!

Sooo - time to take the engine apart a little further to change the hydraulic lifters. Off with the valve cover, off with the hydro pump - off with the cam gear - dang! Take other car drive into city, try to get hold of a LONG 8mm hex bit. End up buying a 8mm socket & 8mm allen key. Hack allan key apart to make long 8mm hex socket. Remove cam gear & camshaft. Then I took the hydraulic lifters fro mthe spare turbo engine and put them in the Taxi engine. All went well, all lifters gliding smoothly in theyr bores - time to put it back together. The camshaft looks good, only minor signs of wear - very much re-usable. So all steps in reverse order - bar the going shopping bit - and the engine is runner! Result is: the worst rattle is gone, but some injector knocking remains. I have someone who sells & adjusts disel nozzles, he still owes me - maye we can sort a deal there The only thing I didn't put back in is the rad cowling... 'cause: leak. curse word, plastic/alloy rads can't be repaired as far as I know... Cheers, Jan
