Whoever new Stig is he can certainly teach better than the old one if the celebrity lap is anything to go by. The F1 drivers who have driven the cheap car have generally taken different lines and been quicker so perhaps it is someone with F1 experience. I've never been bothered about who it is, its just fascinating to watch someone drive a car on the limit the way that the presenters can't. Skoda report was an impressive return to almost the old values. Can you imagine 1990 Clarkson ever imagining he'd do a 10 minute piece heaping loads of praise on a Skoda! Shame the Porsche piece didn't trace the history and development any better. They'd obviously gathered the cars so it would have been nice to have seen some more of them.

The porsche feature would have been improved if they'd raced some vwdrc folks. Yeah but the point was to prove that the humble Bug was curse word (it isn't ) - if they had got the VWDRC involved, they might well have been left feeling a bit, er, embarrassed... its easy enough to find a tuned bug or tuned anything really that could beat a 911 in a drag race, but the 911 is a standard road car designed for all sorts of driving, pretty sure if porsche built one for drag racing it would stomp all over a drag racing beetle. I dunno why people care so much, its only telly.

All very true, However do you not think it would have improved the piece if rather than some eloborate destructive stunt, Hammond had his kicked into next week by a couple of 'rubbish Beetles' sleeper VWs. I enjoyed it either way, And as i laughed at the off road sat nav picture i guess they're aiming the show at me.

I dunno, i think dropping a car from a mile up is far more entertaining than watching a drag race, not so often you see that, i can pop over north weald and watch drag racing.

I enjoyed it. So what if they spend a lot of time on supercars? If I want to see other types of car I'll watch something else; there are plenty of other car programs.
I did start to think I was in the eighties at one point-Tiff Needell, Hammond apparently dressed as Tony Mason (in the 911 bit), they just needed Quentin Wilson to complete the set.

You seem to have missed the point on this one. They say 'we want to drop a car from a mile up, what story can we fit around it?'. Not dropping a car sort of defeats the object of the piece....

I'll have to wait until the new stuff appears on Youtube, but I assure you guys, it cannot be as bad as the Aussie Top Gear. That was truely cringe worthy. I thought that Iplayer went worldwide at the end of last year... I'm pretty sure you can now watch it in continental Europe without having to use any proxy's or other complicated stuff As for the new episode I was amazed at Clarky and how close to a 'proper' old school road test he got. Obviously the Beetle was amusing and it wouldn't be Top Gear if something didn't explode or fall from the sky. I like it and I'm sure I'll enjoy yet another season. Noone does it like them and if I want some more factual stuff it's all on the Internet.

Never been a big fan of Top Gear. A car program with very little about cars and more of messing around !!!. But I did like the Atom against Bike. If you look at how much the bmw costs ver the Atom what a bargain !!!

It's just an hour of silliness about cars, and all the better for it. 350 million viewers worldwide (according to Wiki) means they must be doing it right!
I'm old enough to remember the William Woolard/Chris Goffey/Michelle Newman years, and believe me watching grass grow was a much more engaging pastime. Can you imagine 350,000,000 people sitting down to an hour of this every week?
Yawwwwnnnn....
I've never really understood why anyone would want to watch an hour of 'serious' TV about cars. Especially not these days when a million pieces of footage about your own favourite motor is just a mouse-click away.

I had a powercut just as it started last night. Tonight I watched it on the iplayer and I kept jumping ahead. It was just dull. Contrived and dull. I kept waiting for it to do something and it just didn't. Something has died. The spark is gone.
