All this reminds me of the E type boom in the 80's when the same thing happened and people were paying crazy money for them. That generation are now either too rheumatic, arthritic, obese or dead to get in one, and now (30 years on) you can buy one for half the money they were paying for them in the 80's! Unless it is something really special or carries a marque that is associated with wealth and affluence..... they all drop in the longer term. Oh I don't know. The E Type boom was 20 years ago and values crashed in the recession when there was literally no money about. This recession is different - there's money about but it's being put into some very unlikely cars in an effort to beat inflation. It won't work. When the economy levels out again, suddenly all manner of overpriced old curse word will flood the market as investors try and offload and prices will drop like a stone - just like they did in 1991 with E Types etc. But, E Types went up again because they are a very lovely thing to look at, they go well and sound astounding. An old Escort does not have the same universal appeal. Cars only make good investments when you buy at the bottom of the market and sell at the top. Fair play to this lot if they can sucker 65 grand for an old Escort that someone paid 10 grand for a few years ago! There is indeed one born every minute. Escorts will come down again with time.

thats been for sale on ebay for ages and ages This, the second post in this thread, sums up how accurately it's priced. The car does look very good and if it was priced correctly it would have sold by now. Bizzle - Re-property prices, I drive past this every day.

I wouldn't spend £65,000 on an old Escort, that's ridiculous. I'd ask my financial advisor what to do with it instead

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

Bizzle - Re-property prices, I drive past this every day. I wasn't disagreeing about the property prices, I was objecting to how so many people on here seem to think it's OK to constantly slag off my town.

I don't believe anybody has slagged off Wandsworth before now. It's a much maligned place - but not nearly enough.

London in general, I was talking about - but it doesn't matter, forget it. Commented before I'd had my morning cup of tea. I'm over it now.

This forum has returned my love for Mk1 and Mk2 escorts, given that I'm never likely to have 65k(nor 65k's worth of love for a car!) what does the more 'affordable' end of the old escort spectrum look like? could I get a road worthy car for 1k (or less?) without stealing it? (looking at ebay I guess not!!) are there any 'i got lucky' stories out there? Have a picture as near as I can find to the old escort that I liked so much in the 1st place: Yep nasty green 4 door, I'd love one!

It wasnt so long ago (9 years maybe) that I paid 600 quid for a running, mot'd, tax free mk1 2 door with a 1600 xflo in it, drove it back from Clacton and started using it as a daily driver just before the prices started going upwards that was, sold it on 3 years later for the same amount pretty much stripped down to the shell and a short engine and needing a new floor in the front. Got given this one for nothing, pulled it out of a garage where it had been hiding for 9 years, its a rare 1600L, which was a 4 door 1.3L with the 1600 sport running gear, factory didnt build many by all accounts as they cost the same a s the 2 door sport and the 4 door 1600 ghia almost.

One of my Dad's friends found an immaculate, 36k-ish-mile Escort Mk2 1300 L 4-door on a V plate only a couple of years ago - and I don't think he paid more than £500 for it, the jammy git.
So there are still tidy, original Escorts out there, owned by the same old people that have owned them from day one. However, you'd have to be very lucky to find one - you either need to know people that know people, or spend your life wandering round seaside towns reading classified ad papers and looking at the advertiding cards in newsagents windows.
I doubt you'd find a cheap one for sale on the internet or in any of the national car press - the internet (and the for sale section in classic ford etc.) make it so easy to check up on the value of a car that most people know what they're selling.
One possible option is to look abroad - AFAIK, Escorts are a little cheaper on the continent. Oz supposedly has a few - and mostly rust free. South Africa as well?

not cheap abroad, just more likely to be rust free, you wont save any money after the transport costs but you save a lot of work repairing them.
