Hmm, being colour blind doesnt help when it comes to pointing out wires!! So you think that none of the coils on my new stator plate are for ignition? So there is supposed to be a battery attached that provides power for the ignition? Hmmm... What about if I swap the big coil on here with the stripy wire for my old black coil and HT lead - I presume thats the way forward?

Just for a comparison ![](http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c33/Daveyboy20/5097d019.jpg) Old ![](http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c33/Daveyboy20/ac2863ba.jpg) New ![](http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c33/Daveyboy20/859c267d.jpg) I'd just swap my old stator plate over to it but I don't trust it as the coils look tired, the points adjusting tabs are snapped and... my new one looks so much minter! I guess I'll need to at least swap the black HT coil over to it to start with, on close inspection it seems my points are never fully closing so I'll have to adjust them at the same time, hopefully Thursday night but realistically could be more like Saturday.. I'll get there eventually!

I'll get there eventually! remove coil with dotted cable (blue/green) and the one below and put the ht coil there. use short screws from old generator coil you don't need the old flat coil the new ign already have one remaining cables from left: yellow main power, grey(?) tail light green brake light blue black stripe kill switch a odd thing about the old ign is that someone put a extra coil above ht coil i´m afraid it can disturb magnet field for ht coil ps the battery is for turn signals only, ign still magneto

i think you are mixing up a few things G A R'goyle In amerika the e50 engines often have turn/brake signals, which is where the extra coils are for. With the newer type ignition, there is no battery. It is the same principle as the old one, there is only a coil mounted under the tank. ![](http://i43.tinypic.com/24zybe9.jpg) The main difference is that the spark plug cable is attached to it and has a bigger diametre than the ones that are mounted to the coils that is under your flywheel.

No picture updates as its been doing my head in so much I've not been compelled to take any. I've spent too much of my Saturday on this little toss pot! ![](http://www.hindu.com/2011/05/16/images/2011051658560301.jpg) ![](http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj112/natlouise14/busmoped.jpg) It has spark. It has fuel. It has compression. Points are opening just as it comes to top dead centre. It won't even sniff at firing, not even a tiny bit. Not even one fire. No firing. My mates comin round tomorrow to put another pair of eyes on it. I am now hoping I don't win the eBay item I'm bidding on....

Just checked, won the item already! Ah well, it'll just have to look awesome but go nowhere - I'm used to having vehicles of this nature anyway ;D

a puch is quite simple, if there is a spark and petrol and compression and it still doesn't start, it should be a electrical problem. You are sure, you haven't put the piston upside down? What item did you buy? But keep fiddlin with the ignition, when I let the moped guy set my ignition, it sometimes doesn't spark, he fiddles some more and it sparks. And I am not sure what the effects are with those extra coils you have.

I am beginning to wonder about the piston now.. The compression feels slightly odd, if I block the exhaust off with my finger I don't seem to feel any pressure when I turn the flywheel??? Pics are on the previous page of the way up I put the piston though?
Bloody thing!
I've bought some awesome looking cafe racer style 'brands hatch' bars off of the 70's ;D I've seen a few of them being remade but when I spotted these I just had to have them, really cool kick back on them, they look as close to clip ons as possible ( wouldn't trust clip ons on such a weak designed fork - even the EBR one as you seem to have to fit strengthening bars even with them!
I'm pretty sure the piston is the correct way up, I fitted it with the holes facing upwards?

Yep, just double checked in old pictures and the piston is the right way up. This bike defies logic ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png) And regarding the coils, I've removed all the unnecessary ones, I now have: My old HT coil and HT lead. A very thin coil attached on top of this (green wire) The lighting coil from the new engine at the bottom (yellow wire) That's it. I fitted new points as well whilst I was it.

I strongly advise you to take it to the puch forum. I am blind as a bat concerning electrics. One of the reasons i went for a inner rotor ignition is that it is that much easier to set the timing right ;D But, it has got to be something stupid, why it doesn't start. And just before your mojo dries out, look at my little update. ![](http://i39.tinypic.com/aaaedz.jpg) ![](http://i44.tinypic.com/wbuvqs.jpg)

(edit - just spotted your reply Martijn! That motor looks ace! I think I will ask on the forum if I have no luck after I get my new parts)
Sorry for the boring updates but here's another and it's slightly more positive (this Puch Maxi is a roller coaster of emotions!).
I was certain I was getting a spark as when I held the plug or put my screwdriver in the lead and turned the flywheel over I got a good old belt. I checked and double checked fuel and compression and I was not making a lot of sense - until Chris came found today and we started to play with my multimeter. Both of us suffering excruciating hangovers we began to make some sense of it and it appears that the small wire from the coil was slightl damaged - there was no continuity from the wire to the end of the lead so basically it's not been earthing on the condensor as it should. When I've held the ht lead and got a shock I've basically been earthing it. That's what we think is the problem anyway so I've parted with more hard earned and bought a new coil, plug lead and kill switch. We'll see eh? ;D

puch ain't exactly rocket science, is it? and just to make it worse, if it doesn't work it is probably the owners fault

Haha - very true! And the amount of times this one hasn't worked as well ;D Fingers crossed the dodgy coil is to blame, I'll find out soon hopefully ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

I so hope it is going to drive and drive well. You told me you were gonna get some stuff for your birthday from your girl, please be so smart to give her a few extra pounds and get yourself a better exhaust. (THIS ONE FOR EXAMPLE)And if you "tune" your standard air filter to look like this ![](http://i34.tinypic.com/6f5fyf.jpg) It'll sound the business. The tecno combined with the standard filter will give a nice low sound. You will hear more of the exhaust instead of the BWOAOAP noise that those foam filters give.

god damn these things are evil....... All i ever had was trouble trying to make it work. Then you dare touch ANYTHING incase it doesnt work anymore..... My trouble was allways ignition related. Very simply, The gapping of the points. I just kept setting it till it went. Was very strange. Was going to fit a rotor kit if i kept it.... Why on earth do i want another??? ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

because all of the horror will be forgotten as soon as you drive around for an hour. There isn't much evil about them, it is just a lack of knowledge about these things. Same here, I once stripped an engine completely down and rebuild it, cause it wouldn't start. Cost me two days of looking and searching for the problem, it only being a wire that made contact somewhere, so it wouldn't start. Put some tape over the wire and it started perfectly

![](http://farm2.staticflickr.com/1022/784943566_bce9c12b7c_z.jpg?zz=1) Well, what can I say? This Puch Maxi must have some strange longing to have been left in the back garden in Stockport covered in weeds, maybe it was supposed to be a relaxing retirement? Maybe the 5000 miles it did in the few years it was on the road just reduced it to a gibbering wreck? Whatever the reason, it's putting up a hell of a fight to get back on the road and in working order! Many, many people have told me to give up on it and it's about time I.... Oh hang on a minute, I've just fitted some ace bars and it looks awesome! It's running now by the way, really well it seems - just sounds like a bag of spanners! Unbelievable, but hey, I gambled with the bearings - should have done them ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) This guy shares my frustration: ![](http://troll.me/images/y-u-no/y-u-no-ride-moped-yet.jpg) I'm going to remove the motor again, drain the oil, split the case, measure bearings and see if there are any at work, replace conrod with my racing one, match the ports with a dremel and put the bloomin thing back together again. I've made an adaptor for my drill so starting it isn't quite the arduous task it used to be, however I'd need a heck of an extension if I was to try and use this method when out and about so I'm going to buy a cheap and cheerfull 18v cordless drill specifically for this purpose and stow it in my bag... Think I'm getting ahead of myself there though Got some work to do on the ECU and loom on the Capri as I want to get out in it again as soon as possible so I between sorting that I'll pull the Puch to pieces again and take it from there. Ho hum! ![](http://cdn2.sbnation.com/imported_assets/961689/Oh-Boy-here-we-go-again.jpg)
