People at work always ask me why I can't yet afford a new Golf... oddly enough, I don't want a new Golf even though I could afford one. In fact just keep buying older and older ones which seems to irritate them.
To my mind I prefer to have something a bit individual, that's paid for, not depreciating (possibly appreciating instead) and that you can work on yourself. As others have said, it's difficult for the classic car fan to see why anyone would want the equivalent of a second mortgage every month to pay to have a bland new car sat on their drive!
I particularly enjoy when I encounter said work collegues out on the road in their fantastic new (not paid for) cars and see if they can keep up with my apparently knackered old Mk2 16v.... none of them can! On course then they just declare that I'm a boy racer... you can't win really! ;D

OK, Beige Skoda Estelle with several brush painted beige panel. After passing my test and driving to work in it, when the repaired panels got brush painted, I found my parkig space moved right out of the main car park, round the corner, and trapped against a hedge where one of the women refused to park, because she saw a rat.

Haha, classic! That's unbelievable. I get some perverse pleasure out of making people uncomfortable with my choice of cars - rocking up outside the Mercedes stealership in my latest shonky jalopy, offering lifts without letting on what I'm driving.... it passes the time

The weird thing about driving a Mini is that people either love it or hate it. I'm over 6'2" so I do get asked constantly why i drive it with my height. Also, loads of people ask if I cant afford a real car. My car has cost me more then their 4year old Punto, is just as reliable and is actually appreciating. Irritates me. it's worth it though I used to work with a bloke who was 6'6", and he reckoned that a Mini was one of the few cars he could sit comfortably in the front of. Virtually every other car had a dashboard that got in the way of his legs. lol - Dunno if I agree with that but it's deffo not as bad as most people make out. All I need to do is extend the steering rack and it'll be perfect.

Its funny, i don't think i get any jip for driving my car. I guess its because all the people i know, know how I'm inclined.
I also love the fact that i could buy a lovely car that perfectly good for the price of my mums two new front tyres.

i don't have a problem with modern new cars......they do what they say on the tin, and if someone needs a car like this then so be it.
but i hate car enthusiasts who try and talk to me about how there car has this special bit, or this rare bit on tehre 5 year old car....or how the electric mirror switch was designed by ferrari or something.
you want rare.....go buy some obscure piece of lusted J and come back to me
you want special, find me something thats truely interesting.
you want racing pedigree, go and buy something thats a successful race car.
i also get told that my car is an old nail.....but being a student i can kinda get away with most of that, mainly cos its kinda in fitting with that sorta bum lifestyle ;D ;D

Old cars are the best. Being 17 just makes me think it all the more funny that i love cars from when i wasn't even born ;D

I love my Volvo. 20 years old, realiable as anything, and massive load space. It's great going to B&Q occasionly just to but a 3m length of wood, putting it in the car and shutting the tailgate whilst watching other car owners trying desperately to get small items into their new hatchbacks......cruel but fun!
Our other other car is an Escort MK6 which does the majority of the family duties and I intend to buy a people carrier thing to replace it. I'm not strictly stuck with 'old' cars, but I prefer to drive one daily, it gives me a buzz and I'm enthused with the Volvo. I actually want to work on it as opposed to the Escort which I pay a garage to work on.

I've never really got ripped for any of my cars, most of my mates, family and work colleges seem to expect me to turn up in some thing old and scruffy. i think most people were quite shocked when i brought the Toledo i kept getting comments like 'its a bit tidy for you' ;D I don't think that i have ever been questioned over my choice of cars. But if i was asked why? i don't think i would take offense.

I think there is something deeply wrong with the "instant" society. It makes people ruder and more impatient.
I've met people who drive new cars, live in new houses full of Ikea furniture and they are BORED. They have nothing to do and can't grasp the idea of getting a hobby. Nope, all they do is watch TV and go to the pub. I've heard people complain about "too much spare time". JHC, can you imagine such a thing? Too MUCH spare time? LOL
Does a tin of macaroni cheese count as a ready meal?
I'm still trying to live in the 1970s or something here. Its warm and fuzzy. It was also quieter and people weren't so damn rude.

I think I agree with all parties here, maybe we're just the tip of a rebellion iceberg, reclaiming the lost values of yester- year. On a 911 forum a guy said I could get a decent 911 for £5k, I said I could get at least 5 ace cars for that money. I'm the sort of person who enjoys a bargain and knowing I just went to the scrappy to get a bumper or whatever for a tenner, had fun and probably made a new friend, is so satisfying and makes up for the times when the car stalls in the middle of junctions. No cars are perfect and we all choose our poison, I just like mine with character, not warranty

a lot of people have brought money into this - so what do you make of people who spend large amounts on classic/retro cars?

Personally it doesn't really bother me what people drive, I know my budget and know I get the most fun from how I choose to spend my cash. If I had a lot of money to blow I'd still buy older cars and restore/modify them more. People tend to assume you buy an older car because that's all you can afford, which is dumb considering you can buy anything on credit now adays and frequently they don't own what they drive. I can't really think of a new car I'd spend say £30k on, rather than buy a £2k classic and make it into a dream machine.

My car cost 10 times less than my friend's Corsa, and is three times quicker to 60. Has a much nicer interior too and is more comfortable ;D I win ;D And no, he doesn't 'get it'.

interesting topic. i'd like to defend people who buy new cars if i may. my dad, mum and two of my sister's drive modern cars daily. reason being, blinkeredness i suppose in that modern cars are more reliable, but also, ok, they spend £200 a month on something they will probably never own, but, with that they get a warranty so they can just take it to a dealer if it breaks. they also get a more economical engine and don't have to worry about rust. point proven when my dad was using his '73 scimitar this week to tow a trailer and the starter motor went...meaning he couldnt move the trailer till it was fixed. granted, it was cheaper to fix than a modern car and we could do it in the street, most people don't want to do this. on the other hand, i can fully see that with the 8k my sister paid for her 206 she could of bought an older car that was quicker and more fun. i guess it's down to what people want to spend their money on. and, it is also worth remembering imo, as someone said, that many people who own a classic car actually spend a great deal of money on the car...and more often than not money they will never see again, is this not the same as owning a new car ? it comes down to what people enjoy...whether than is spending money and working on an older car, or buying a new car and spending money modifing that, or owning a new car and going on holiday to ibiza...

My response to people that mock my cars is very straightforward.....mind your own fu...ng business! If you don't wanna look at it shut your eyes!! Strange how when people that usually laugh at my cars, don't mind being seen in one of them when they need a lift. One person was actually taking the pee out of my car when I was giving him a lift to a dealer cos his expensive executive car had been fixed when it's ECU packed in. It was pouring with rain, and I actually stopped the car and made him walk the last 2 miles to the dealer!! Guess who had the last laugh that day! ;D

i get people mock the buggy. i just reply with "yeah but you spend thousands making your car loud/different. i just bought one thats probably the only one in this county and its louder than most for just over 2k. plus it turns everyones head, from boy racer to old lady" although i think there is another beach buggy round here somewhere, probably not a hustler though.
