Please don't ask me why, but I have a soft spot for these! I quite fancy trading my Audi estate diesel for something older and petrol. I want something J. 1.6 engine for low tax etc. Something tatty so I can lay it on the ground and paint it matt blaxck without feeling guilty. So these tick all my boxes.......plus I think they have big potential. Anyone own one? and more to the point, anyone got any cool pictures of one?!! (or do they not exist?!) Or any alteratives I can look at?? Needs to be super cheap and reliable. Joe

My parents had one for a long, long time and I remember it being the most reliable car in the world, never had a single problem with it.
I never drove it but it wasn't particularly slow, motorway speeds were easy and it was pretty comfy.

they're extremely reliable, still lots of them about here in ireland, for what they are they're good to drive. they're easy to fix and being toyotas have lots of potential for engine swaps etc. nevr did any modifying to them myself apart from lowering and wheels but driven enough of them to know they're good old motors.

You might struggle to get low tax if it's a 1.6! I like Carina IIs a lot.

I have a curious soft spot for bland old Toyotas. You really can't go wrong with them

I had a Mark three one of these... ex-taxi, 320,000 on the clock, both wing mirrors taped on, paint stripper poured over the bonnet and no third gear.. it was an awesome, awesome car!

When I was a wee nipper doing my paper-round there was a hatch and a saloon on the same street. I was fashcinated by the different tail-lights (symmetric for the 5-door, assymetric for the saloon). I mean, why bother ? I had a Mark three one of these... ex-taxi, 320,000 on the clock, both wing mirrors taped on, paint stripper poured over the bonnet and no third gear.. it was an awesome, awesome car! sig material if ever I saw it there, dude.

A friend had one.... and it was indestructable. In nearly ten tears he never did anything to it... bar rag the ar5e off it.... and it never missed a beat!!!
Was possibly the dullest, most reliable and most bomb proof car I have ever seen!! Great choice for a daily.

I like these too but like most Toyotas they like a bit of rust. I will have to say the complete opposite. I live on the south coast and 6 month old cars can start rusting down here. Locally ive never seen a rusty one. (In Eastbourne with all the old dears there are still loads about). My father loves them. He has had over 5 now and come MOT time his cars always pass. He has never broken down in one either. Ive driven them with 20k on the clock and 200k on the clock and they always drive identically. Also tax on the 2.0 is the same and personally I would look for one of these. Would have to say i wouldnt want one myself though. IMO One of the dullest cars ive ever driven. Sorry.

There are still lots of those around up here in the north, one of my neighbours just traded a mint Carina II 1.6 XL -89 for a newer Corolla. They sold many Carinas here in Finland because of the high tax on cars and due to the fact that Toyotas have always been relatively cheap here. Usually the remaining ones are rusty as hell but as the engines are almost bullet proof they keep on rollin'.

My parents have one: And my tip is, if you're looking at one, get one of the latest (called Impact or Exiv overhere, dunno 'bout your side!) just before they started selling the Carina E. You get all kind of cool gadgets then! (central door locking, aircon/sunroof, powersteering). My dad has done 120.000km in it now, and other then oilservicing and t-belt there's no need to open the bonnet. Oh, and the engines are non-interferance, so if the cambelts go, just line it all up and put a new one on and drive on!. Rust wise: the one standing here has none, even after i remodelled the rear wing a bit!

I've just saved those Carina II images from the website they reside on and just stumbled acorss this thread while searching for rear springs after failing my MOT on a broken rear Cobra sports one! I'll get some shots of mine up here, she's a GREAT driving car for the 234,000 miles on her with recent clutch, shocks, springs, bushes, radiator, brake shoes etc etc. Gonna be for sale soon too as I just got a '99 Legacy 2.5l 4WD and can't afford to run it AND the Carina AND the Eunos

Oh, when you stick wider wheels on with lower offset it REALLY sorts the handling out, I rarely have hole drivers near me when there are bends in the equation and the Hillhall road near Lisburn is a fun road for terrifying passengers in mine
