If only it was that easy..... just tell her that like that loan advert that used to be on telly, when the smug couple with loads of money and the new volvo pull up along side...You'll totally have em eating your dust when it goes green! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

The thing I'm wondering is how quick will it be? Depends which EFI V8 it is? Not a Vitesse one, I think thats a Discovery one. No more power than a SD1 carb engine really. And the Volvo is a heavy oold car with the aero of a brick. It will sound nice but as far as being a sleeper? Nice cruiser though

He says its got various trick bits, cam, heads etc so it ought to be not too bad, those old Rover SD1 vitesses used to be 190bhp, not earth-shattering but not too shabby either. You’re not gonna be complaining that it’s slow as hell.

VOLVOS ARE NOT HEAVY 240's are around the 1300kg range and thats not all that heavy well maybe it is compared to a fiesta but come on the torque of the V8 will shift it through warp speen no problem and the GLT a measly 133bhp isnt slow get it on virgos or steels and strip it out ...I'm still pondering whether to give the guy a ring and go view it this afternoon (just out of intrest)

That thing is bloody cool, I'd love to get my hands on one of the new Volvo V8s that the US spec XC90s can be orered with, give it throttle bodies etc, maybe even a supercharger or turbos although I don't know if there'd be room, and stick it in a 2 or 7 series, although that one with the Rover V8's a great alternative!

So as I said, they aren't all that whale-like. Other than that, the long wheelbase 960 I have at the moment, which is definately heavier than most Volvos, is officially only putting out 200 horses (although to be fair I think this one may be putting out a little more because it's no slower than a standard 960's official figures, if anything it's faster!), but it still must reach 150mph plus (I never did test its top speed because I ran out of waste ground and I'm not doing that on the motorway for fear of losing my license, and not doing it on the backroad for fear of losing my life! ;D ;D) and I have given out shocks to big Mercs and BMWs when they tried to leave me sitting at the lights! So they can't be that heavy, considering a Merc V8 has a considerable power advantage over a Volvo straight six, yet the Volvo doesn't get left behind, despite being quite big itself. Evidently the 960 is a fair bit lighter than a Merc E class.

Having seen Mr Scraps Benz accelerate from 50mph up, all I'll say is. Torque... It'll whup any Volvo in standard tune, and that's what his is. And I'm a Volvo man...

1300 KG is still 1.3 tonnes... According to Google the curb weight is 1405 KG and GVW is 1950 KG for a 240 GLE Estate. You are getting up towards yank car weight terretory there.
As for the parrallel universe where a Volvo sedan can beat an Integrale... Now c'mon, did the Lancia driver even know you were racing him? Old Volvos are nice cruisers, and the V8 will help things along nicely but talk of them whupping or even keeping up with 4x4 rally homologation specials is pushing the bounds of credibility chaps.
I once beat a Sierra Cosworth in an Astra 1.3S. OK, the Cossie was on trade plates and being driven by a 50+ year old guy, but it still proves how fast an Astra 1.3 is doesn't it?

Fair point, the gvw of a 240GLT is pushing somewhere near 1500kg. Having stripped one out I can assure it is a heavy old thing, the only true and fair comparison you can make between any two vehicles is with the same driver on the same track... Not road. It was once related back to me about how there was a Corsa driver who'd come into my friends garage saying he'd 'burnt off a ratty looking old BMW' on some b road around our home town. Knowing that it was my ratty old BMW that was being referred to, he questioned me and I told him I'd been pestered by a Corsa, ignored it and then been dangerously overtaken and cut up into a corner by said Corsa. Win Corsa? Yay! It's the age old debate, mine's faster than yours etc. This Volvo will be healthy, but I doubt whether it's pushing more than 190-200bhp, maybe if it's set up well. It'll also be limited by the wallowing standard suspension, lack of LSD and load assisting shocks are not the ideal handling mod. A good buy that if I had the money I'd put the £1200 required down on it... But let's not get carried away here.
