Really need to get me some vitamin SJ to spice up my life.
I'd really love an LJ but they seem to be rarer than unicorn poo....

LJ's had serious rust issues, very few escaped, still regret selling mine. On the bonnet and windscreen on a SJ is a loop for tying it down, I used to use a cut down leather belt, saves it popping up at speed ;-)

cheers although I never finished the doors, maybe something to do on the cold dark nights.
Kind of getting there with the dashboard, no pics as yet but all I need to do is wire it up (yikes) A pal is going to help me.
I must have had at least 10 dirty looks from not signalling.

dash is coming along, wiring is mostly done. Got a removable hard top from ebay, the seller was in Telford and I collected today. I fitted the top there and then and took some pics. I had some trouble getting it to fit to start with, I bashed the roof bar forward with a crowbar and a block of wood (no hammer) I think the roof bar has been jolted backwards by the bonnet flipping up on me whilst driving in the past.(hence the bonnet catches) The chap is breaking the whole thing (bog standard but rusty H reg sammy) I gave him my old soft top to go on it to keep the weather out until then and put dibs on the bonnet, my old top was a bit torn and no use to me now I have this top. The front part needs some work, I think it may have had a light repair job before but needs sorting properly (I can fix this) I am thinking about adding a sun visor to the front piece. I was pleased with the warmth in the cabin on the way home, call me a pussy but I like a cosy cabin if possible. It will leak water at the moment die to crumbly seals so I'll bodge it with tape and sealant for now and fix it properly the summer.

I got some more bits done this weekend, a couple of small storage trays, the smaller one with the light is to go above the switchboard and to hold my phone, coins and a pen, the other one is to go lower down on the passenger side. Made from a roasting tray, bit of an old tool box and a rear reg plate light from a renault van. £4 the lot. A few hours of doing wiring in a limbo pose and swearing later, the cubbies are in, the little light is wired to the lights circuit and my radio is secured and wired up, fm aerial fitted and speakers installed. It feels a bit weird driving with a radio on after so long of just hearing the engine and everything else in squeaking, rattling and jigging about, now I am paranoid that there will be something going wrong and I wont hear it. hhaaha still more to do on it but getting there now.

Gaah I missed the LJ, thats 3 so far.
The SJ is looking good - I like the new top. Nothing like a bit of warmth in winter!

Another engine bites the dust, this time its crank bearings. Still runs but sounds like a bag of nails now.
On the lookout for a suzuki g13a if anyone has one.

What sort of abuse are you giving these poor little engines? :-O
Did you see the SJ that'd been converted to rover K series?

Absolutely epic dashboard, positively inspired... varnishing it or giving it a practical black vinyl/leatherette wrap eventually?

I did rag the engine a bit, what killed it was the throttle got jammed open in traffic and I had to drive up the road with the engine screaming, the brakes jammed on and trying to control the speed with the ignition switch, it was all over in seconds and when it was the engine had let go.
as for the dashboard, I was planning to cover it in black vinyl but the heath robinson half finished look suits the rest of it so I'm leaving it for now.

Well my truck has been off the road for a couple of months because the bottom end packed up, it still runs but its VERY NOISY! I have been using my old corsa to get about but its not holding up well to having loads of tools and curse word chucked in it all the time. I have been meaning to finish building the engine I started last year but have been too busy, so with the summer coming and my insurance on the corsa coming up for renewal I want to get the truck going. I got an engine off ebay this weekend for £10.50 I also got this wheel of an MG and fitted it today. To save the effort of making a centre from scratch I used an old cam belt pulley, it works ok and suits the rest of the interior much better than the suzuki one.

How long til the mule hits the road again? Well I went and fetched the engine, it was in Portsmouth (why is it that 99% of ebay things are at the other side of the country?) 180 miles each way, so I got up early (3.30 am) drove in the trusty old corsa and arrived at the dudes house at just gone 7. Its done 104,000 miles had a snapped cambelt but no damage. compression test on head, head skimmed and refitted with new hg and belt. It was one of those bids where beer was involved, fingers crossed it will run ok and give me some summertime open top motoring. I really want to build up my other engine. I should just get off the intarwebs and crack on with clearing my shed and doing it. I also need to fit a new waterpump to the van aswell before we go anywhere in it as the old one has a worn bearing but holds coolant. BTW MDH! did you notice that modded LJ on the bay?? cgi.ebay.co.uk/1981-SUZUKI-LJ-80-GREEN-sj413-sj-sj410-/160566839442?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item2562878892

I sure did! ;D I messaged him, but I think £1600 is a bit steep when it doesnt have a roof or doors! Have you thought about dieseling the mule?

I have considered using an ldv pilot engine and box but is a lot of work compared to a straight swap.
He put it up for £2000 to start with so may come down further.
