Not allowed to take anything from the one local to me. :-(
And anything interesting gets taken to the guys running it little hut.
They keep all the vacs etc. seperate as I'm sure they sell them on. I take stuff bagged up now and chuck it before they can poke about in it, they want it they get into the skip themselves miserable bastards.

last time I was at my local one they wouldn't let me have anything (offered him some cash btw), was looking for a cheap road bike (still am ) and there was a few in the metal skip looked perfectly good too but he wouldn't even entertain anyone having one. Then again the guy who's usually there got all huffy with me cos I took two old engine blocks and a bunch of car panels there (this was before the price of scrap was high, he was like "this isn't a scrap yard" wtf? like there making money off it? (well the council are) Its a different guy there now who seems a lot more helpful, so might have a look next time i'm there.

I got a Britool 5 foot breaker bar from the metal skip the other day. The drive socket had snapped but it was a bolt on so I just robbed one off of my old breaker bars and its as good as new.

V8ian - where is this yard near Watford? If I told everybody the whereabouts of this yard, there would be little or nothing left for me in reality, the yard is nowhere as easy to get bits from, with busybody staff running around saying, you cant have this or that,, BUT because I have been using the place for 20 years, and i have got to know the "guvnor" I can get away with a few bits and pieces now and then, + I took him out in my cortina for a scare once, he has allways been good to me since.

Always have a rummage around in the skips. It's proper recycling!!
Recently have had wheels and tyres for my box trailer, a go-kart for my boy, (timely really as I was taking his scooter to throw away as my wife had driven over it!), computer monitor for my boy's computer.
I love going to the tip. The guys are usually quite helpful as well although I do feel a bit 'traveller' retrieving stuff.

Don't have any luck at our local tip! anything that looks good is put next to the tea hut and is up for sale at crazy prices, anything like tools etc are put in the cars of the people that work there and are then taken down the carboot sale or dorset steam rally!

They don't take car parts as if you have noticed they are called "household" recycling centres .. there are scrap yards for car bits... personally ive dumped loads of car bits there.. just gotta be clever and make em not look like car bits No yards round here let ya scavange thru the bins... you can understand why as theres loads of pointy curse word. but they will let ya buy stuff in the lil hut and in the corners of the yards.. also if your friendly with the guy who runs the place like me... or slip him a pouch of baccy at crimbo hes alright

Theres some great stuff at our local one but were not allowed to touch it. The council blokes that work there take it and sell it at the local car boot sales.

our local brimingham skip aint too bad , scored a 4" wide record engineers vice from there the other week , the metal skip is a roll on/off type that you walk into , just as my son and i was depositing some metal items in there i spotted the vice , picked it up as one of the workers walked by looking in , i duly chastised my 13 year old lad taking my vice from the trailer after i told him it wernt being dumped , said worker laffed and shook his head at my son, luckily my son knows the score and had a good laff later about it. recently dumped a complete scimitar body shell there after utting it up . the old boy on the gate asked what I'm doing with the v6 essex engine, told hiim I'm putting it in my fd estate , starts to tell me about the v6 he built with a supercharger and draught excluder carb( wtf) . alloy camshaft (lol) and it ran 6s at the pod in a capri. tried not to laff too loud as i drove off.
